Is that Dave on the piano? Wow, this song sets up American Baby perfectly!!! I think the missiles and bombs set up the message for American Baby. I believe that American Baby is about the soldiers that America is sending overseas, and their families that want them to stay.

This song is interesting because it's almost like a mish-mash of several different musical ideas put together. It stops and starts suddenly. At the end you have the VERY sad violen part, reminding me of music that you hear in movies about the holocaust (think Schindler's List).

This song is probably the best music on the CD. With very few lyrics, it provides such a powerful meaning by the music.

I love it because it's the band just jamming like old times.

this is the most beautiful piece of music i've ever heard, no joke. however, american baby isnt really telling the soldiers to stay. its saying that since september 11th, the american values have been challenged but we can't let other people change us.. we have to stay beautiful and stay american.. no matter how you interpret it, its beautiful and this is a gorgeous opener for american baby

This intro is so amazing. It gives me a chill everytime. But I have a question...At the end where it says: And she said a hundred times...she said a thousand times... What do you think that means? For some reason, I picture it being about the wives and girlfriends of the soldiers going off to war...asking them a thousand times not to go. Just a thought...but please tell me what you think!

i saw him at the darien center this summer tour and they turned this song into a 10 minute jam. it was amazing. you couldnt tell what it was at first but it turned into a arena rocking jam as the whole place was shaking. a hilight of the night. then during the intro of twostep he started to sing "she says 100 times she says 1000 times." it blended well.

it is dave on the piano...butch only tours with them as a "special guest" and therefore isn't in the band or on the albums...

i agree with the lyrics being about the wives and girlfriends asking the soldiers not to go...never thought of it that way...

actually, butch is the one playing all the piano parts in this song live and on the album, he has been playing with them since before the crowded streets, and has done all of the piano work, most people are waiting for them to include him as a full memeber of the band since he's been at every show since the everyday tour and has been on busted stuff and stand up, if you watch the duel side of the stand up cd it shows that he has his own space and is there playing with them the whole time, it does show dave, carter and even fonzy playing on the piano and other things, but as far as the recordings, it's all butch, i myself thought it was dave til i watched the dvd and saw them live with this song and out of my hands, sorry, but it's all butch

This song is awesome live, out does the song it introduces by far, but stes it up perfectly on the album. I can see where it came from older Dave songs since live it's about 99% instrumental. They give it justice by not playing it just to set up "American Baby."

I saw the final show of the winter tour in Boston and Dave played this song so well. Another sweet 10 minute jam version. It was so good I was actually glad he didn't follow it with American Baby. I got the show online and now the only thing I listen to is that version of this song, I definatly recommend grabbing that show just to hear this amazing jam.

Intros usually have the best music. I love this thing. But i really only like the first half, right until it calms down again after the thousand times line.

i think that this song was titled intro for a reason, i mean, dave is a smart guy after all and wouldn't arbitrarily add the "intro" just because it comes before american baby. the lyrics portray a woman talking, and since it is the intro to american baby, it seems like the lyrics to american baby are what she did in fact say. i can't think of any other reason why he would make it the intro because dave probably would have given it another name if the two were not related.

This isn't just about any girl but a girl named Anne who died at the hands of her husband in 1994. Dave Matthews’s sister. Looking back at it must feel like "she said, a thousand times...Everything" I just saw this performed and while you see the pain come across it's obvious that that guttural crying out is only scratching the surface of the loss.

jd23 that's a good way of looking at it! it's a whole differ perspective and i give u credit but i don't think that's what it's about. How could it be? Dave left the death of anne with under the table and dreaming. I have to agree wtih what was previously said that the bombs and missles at the start get ur mind in a war state. Then you hear "she said" growing. Like your in panic and all you can hear is that voice in ur head grow louder of what "she said." Then american baby starts which to me is the person realizing he should have stayed with the one he loves and "steal the winds from the angry men who rule the world." to me it's gotta be about the wives and family left behind!

this song is flat out a masterpiece. have you heard him play it live? it is amazing. so simple a song, with lyrics so plain, but you get the feeling of the song so well. It builds and builds just like the lyrics, and comes to a raging climax; then it cools down, and you get a sense of relief.

What i get from it, is that this girl (if used in it's simplest context, not the context of war) said things to him over and over again, and she broke his heart. it's just devastating. so simple, and yet so to the point. amazing.

This song has always made me think of my best friend in the Marines. To me, it tells a story just through the music. I can picture him, or someone in his position that has a loved one at home not wanting them to go off into combat. She says a hundred times, a thousand times.. and no. He goes off, and never returns. It's a powerful song.. and something I hope never happens to my friend.

I only have the LT6: Boston version of this song, that's it. But I have to say, this is one of the most intense songs I've ever heard in my life, which is weird considering the source. Really morose, pensive, melancholy, esoteric, reflective, all those things that make up a good sad song. But with a mounting implacable intensity to it as well, but not breeding from anger either, which is what makes it so different than a lot of other intensity factor songs. I love Butch's work on it.

Oh, and those weird little nature sounding effects on the first few bars and those first 3 or 4 piano notes....incredible. And it keeps a great, steady 3/4 signature with a 4/4 at the end of every one. This song is just so alive. I love it. And I can't think of any other song that it could open that would do it justice besides two step, so perfect.

Praise that entire 4 disc set. Well, not disc 2, but whatever.
