You're in control
Is there anywhere you want to go?
You're in control
Is there anything you want to know?
The future's for discovering
The space in which we're traveling

From the top of the first page
To the end of the last day
From the start in your own way
You just want somebody listening to what you say
It doesn't matter who you are
It doesn't matter who you are

Under the surface trying to break through
Deciphering the codes in you
I need a compass, draw me a map
I'm on the top, I can't get back

Whoa whoa

The first line on the first page
To the end of the last page
From the start in your own way
You just want somebody listening to what you say
It doesn't matter who you are
It doesn't matter who you are

You just want
Somebody listening to what you say
Oh, you just want somebody listening to what you say
It doesn't matter who you are
It doesn't matter who you are

Is there anybody out there who
Is lost and hurt and lonely too
Are they bleeding all your colors into one?
And if you come undone
As if you've been run through
Some catapult it fired you
You wonder if your chance will ever come
Or if you're stuck in square one

General Comment:The title gives away what this song's about really: feeling like you're not making progress in some part of your life which is obviously important to you. I've been feeling a bit like I'm "stuck in square one" over the past few months with regard to work and relationships so it's proven pretty relatable.

Song Meaning:I notice a lot of people say this song refers to relationships, but i think its' more than that. He seems to be referring to the superficiality that we as humans have come to in a technologically advancing world. It speaks of corporations giving us the illusion of control ("your in control") and stripping us of our identity . How we think we are moving with progress, but our hearts have been left behind. It seems to me that Chris is trying to say that we have all this information but are still needing to be heard (Under the surface trying to break through.."). And at the end, he seems to question the silence. He seems to question is anyone else searching for more than superficiality, or is he just scratching the surface himself and stuck in square one.

Song Meaning:It's about someone that has never found love, and they're wondering if they ever will. Hence the last verse, and the last few lines in the chorus. This person just wants someone to listen and care about them, but they never have been able to, and that pains them. They're lonely. Themes like this are all over this album. In songs like X&Y, Low, and Twisted Logic, especially.

General Comment:Offtopic. But thank God the lyrics are "The space in which we're traveling" and not "in which we travel in." *breathes a sigh of relief*

General Comment:Some parts of the song say everything: It is about someone who hasn't find himself yet (Deciphering the codes in you)i.e. hasn't find his role in the universe and desperately need help in finding it (I need a compass, draw me a map), so that he will not be stuck in square one anymore (As he don't know who he is he don't know what to do - is stuck in square one). We can see that this person is trying to understand himself, learning, reading, studying... (From the top of the first page
To the end of the last day).

    Cheers!

General Comment:awesome song. one of the best of the album. they said 'as soon as the song square one existed......we knew it would the opening track....because you can't have the song called square ONE as....you know.....track seven'

General Comment:This is not a U2 rip off at all. It sounds nothing like the Unforgettable Fire. It sounds more like U2's Zooropa, somewhat in music and quite a bit in lyrics if anything. Inspired, maybe, but not a rip-off.

"I need a compass, draw me a map" - Sqaure One

"I have no compass, I have no map, and I have no reasons, no reasons to get back" - Zooropa
