Lyrics for La La Lie as interpreted by loveisaverb

La La Lie Lyrics
Guess what, I'm done writing you songs
You give up your job at the bank
Proving money's not fun when you're gone
So this is the first verse
It's not very long
But I'm ready to move on

Guess what, I'm done writing your book
The ending got twisted around
But for all of the hell that it took
The electrical wires
They're hung in the walls
In the room that I rent now

Well actually, I've got friends who (la la la lie)
Will help me pull through (la la la lie la la la lie)
A space man that can't get high.
I'm coming back to my girl by July.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's right.

So guess what, I'm done
Drawing you pictures.
I'm dulling the day with a drink
In a parking garage by the theatre .
We met for a movie.
Every scene was a sign.
We made out through their meaning.

Well I've got friends who (la la la lie)
Will help me pull through (la la la lie la la la lie)
The space man that can't get high.
I'm coming back to my girl by July.
Yeah Yeah Yeah!
Yeah!

Guess what I'm done
Writing you songs.
Far too unstable to settle
I doubt that the doctors are wrong.
So I'll wait by a palm tree.
A palm tree.
A palm tree.

I've got friends who who (la la la lie)
To help me pull through (la la la lie la la la lie)
A space man that can't get high.
I'm coming back to my girl by July.

Well I've got friends who (la la la lie)
Oh she'll help me pull through (la la la lie la la la lie)
The song for a long goodbye.
I'm coming back...I'm coming back to my girl. (la la la lie)
Back to my girl. (la la la lie la la la lie)
The song for a long goodbye.
I'm coming back to my girl by July.

i love this song lol it helped me through times with my friends, friends are fucking awesome most of the time.. but very rarely they are backstabbing.... but yes hes just talking about how he needs a break from his friends(/girlfriend?) who have been lying to him, and how he has done so much for them, but hes stopping all that now.. but he will come back to her soon because he cant stay away for too long...

anyways, i have no clue really, and i have the live version right now.. and when the lyrics here say "So wait by the palm tree, palm tree, palm tree" i hear.. " ( so wait by the ) Apothecary" lol or something like that.. does anyone else hear that? or just me

I really agree with that, he seems to need a reliance on his friends, yet he feels he cant trust them because they "la la lie" and its "la la" to make it a kind of hidden under the surface "lie" i completely agree though.... I have the same problem with a friend and its all caving in on me and i just wanna turn round, and say "i'm done pissing around, this matters now" which i feel is what Andrew is saying.....

I hear the song as this:

A space man that can't get high.
I'm coming back to my girl by July.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's right.

Drawing you pictures.

Hmm. Initially I thought the song was about how his friends have lied to him and his girlfriend has done something to upset him, but I am beginning to wonder if maybe it's about his friends lying to him saying stuff like "It'll get better" etc to help him feel better when they know that really his girlfriend is a b*tch and his situation sucks.

I figure this song was written before he found out he had leukemia but the part that goes "I doubt the doctors are wrong, so I'll wait by a palm tree" that leads into the chorus also made me think about how all his friends were probably trying to cheer him up when he was in the hospital.

well... if you read between the lines of the chorus:

I've got friends who
La La Lie
Will help me pull through
La La Lie
La La La Lie
The spaceman that can't get high
I'm coming back to my girl by July
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

Now, take out the La La Lie's and Yeah yeah yeah's... and it reads:

I've got friends who
Will help me pull through
The spaceman that can't get high
I'm coming back to my girl by July

So, the Lie part, in my opinion has nothing to do with his friends, but, he is tying to cope with his girlfriend, so he's saying that his friends will help him through his difficult time.

He is the spaceman that can't get high (into the air or space, wherever... just UP) because his girl is gone, and he's so emotionally weighed down, he just can't seem to feel good and 'raise' himself to get better.

I think he's just seperated from his girlfirend for temporary, not thatthey borke up or anything, and the La La Lie is just a great 'jingle' and catchy part to add into there.

He's trying to stop obsessing over her by telling the listener that he's done with doing things associating with her:

"Guess what I'm done
Writing your songs... book... {and} drawing your picture..."

Then after he says he's done with her, he then reminises something he does with his 'girl'

Well, I might be way off, but I know the La La Lie most likely has NOTHING to do with somebody lieing...

Enjoy, and I pray that I make sense to you.

ok first of all strungagnstthric is right with the lyrics - the main ones r wrong, and who ever submitted them should get them changed

also i agree wiht the last post, the la la lie bit is backup volcals and isnt sayign his friends lie, its just like singing 'do-dos and whoa-whoas'

Actually it's "la la lie" throughout the song...never "la la la lie"

Anyway, I disagree that you can just dismiss the whole "la la lie" as a hook.

It's more like "I've got friends who will help me pull through." But the "lie" is one of two things as far as I can tell: Either he doesn't actually have friends to help him pull through, OR, the manner in which his friends will help him pull through is by lying--telling him what he wants to hear.

the "la la lie" part is definitely not just a "jingle" or backup vocals... if it was that insignificant, andrew would not have named the song after it. hell, he would have just said "la la la" instead.

i agree with gaylordmfocker... i think he means that his friends are helping him pull through by lying and telling him what they think he needs to hear.

"the spaceman who can't get high."

whenever i hear this it reminds me of the song "the astronaut" by soco where andrew sings:
"calling out to the astronaut
i need some of what you've got
i need to be high"

i don't know...maybe la la lie is about him finding out that he was sick and knowing that things in his life had to change like drugs and that his friends were going to help him through that. yet, at the same time his girlfriend is far away and he's hoping that he'll see her again soon. who knows.

About the whole disregarding the lies, that's like, taking away the point of the song I personally think. It took me a while to figure out what he meant, or at least what I think he means.
I think every time he says ''la la lie'' what he just said, it's all a lie.
That he doesn't have friend and they aren't going to help him pull through.
But I was confused because I think my own theory doesn't work because he never says ''la la lie'' about coming back to his girl until the end. So I was thinking maybe he was getting fed up by the end and he was changing his mind about coming back?

well i def. agree with crazeypotter about the spaceman part... i was trying to figure out what that was refering to- if it was drugs or what. but i think it's about an emotional weight that can't be lifted off his shoulders.

the la la lie parts have nothing to do with lying at all. there's a Who song called La La La Lies and it's about how he doesn't need his friends cause he's got his girlfriend. this song is just the opposite, he doesn't need a girlfriend cause he's got his friends. or at least, his friends will help him get over his (ex) girlfriend. i'm pretty sure that's where it came from

i just think the song is about a long distance relationship and your friends may or may not be helping you through though you wish they would...im not really sure about the la la lie part....but i think its just saying its a lie that he thinks his friends would help...mostly because thats how i feel

i think that the la la lie's have a small thing to do with the meaning sorta...they're in the song just faintly so that one can hear it and bring up a meanings towards them...everythings in this song for a reason...peace

strungagnstthric's lyrics are correct except it's:

"They HUM in the walls
in the room that I rent now
WITHOUT YOU
I've got friend's who..."

well
he was a leukemia patient....so maybe he was talking about his friend's lying to help him pull through it
look at this line

Guess what? I'm done writing you songs
I'm far too unstable to shadow
I doubt that my doctors were wrong
So wait by the palm tree, palm tree, palm tree

yeah...see
and his sister was the donor that gave her bone marrow for his surgery
idk
i thought it was neat...but yeah i think that's what this song is about his friends lying to help him pull through the leukemia

umm....just a thought, but if 'la la lie' was just like 'backing vocals' or to make it sound good or wateva, couldnt he have just said 'la la la'? i think that the la la LIE is part of the meaning of the song

exactly. i think it's kind of ominous, like he's going on and on about how his friends are there for him, but the hidden meaning is that their friendship is a lie. the "la la lie" part only comes in between the lines "i've got friends who / will help me pull through" meaning that even though he's saying this, it's not true. that's my interpretation.

i don't agree that hes talking about his friends lying to him.

because when i saw him in concert last night before this song he said "this ones about good friends who help you get through the tough times.. i have them, and i hope you do too"

sooo i think that la la lie doesn't mean that his friends are lying to him..

I like andrew's double entendres in his songs, like in this one, "We met for a movie, every scene was a sign we made out through their meaning", like that could mean the obvious, like they made out during the movie, or it could mean they made out the signs in the movie...good stuff, that andrew's a thinker. On a side note, i think la la lie has nothing to do with his friends lying to him, the song's about a girl who's giving him problems for one reason or another, and his friends will help him pull through until he comes back to her.
