Yeah, ya, yeah
Yeah, ya, yeah oh
I would dig a hole all the way to China
Unless of course I was there
Then I'd dig my way home
If by digging, I could steal
The wind from the sails of the greater men who ruled the world
Still you my best friend
And after a good good drunk
You and me
Wake up and make love after a deep sleep
Where I was dreaming
I was dreaming of a dreamgirl, dreamgirl, dreamgirl, dreamgirl
Well I was feeling like a creep
As I watched you asleep
Face down in the grass
In the park in the middle of a hot afternoon
Your top was untied
And I thought 'how nice it'll be the fall of your sweat down your spine'
You're my best friend
Or after a good good drunk
You and me
Wake up and make love after a deep sleep
Where I was dreaming
I was dreaming of a dreamgirl, dreamgirl, dreamgirl, dreamgirl
Caught by the wave my back to the ocean
It knocks me off feeling, just as I find my footing
Here you come again, dreamgirl, oh dreamgirl
That's all dreamgirl, but a dreamgirl, dreamgirl, oh wait dreamgirl
In my dreams dreamgirl, I'm dreaming dream girl
Deep in, deep in
Yeah, ya, yeah oh
I would dig a hole all the way to China
Unless of course I was there
Then I'd dig my way home
If by digging, I could steal
The wind from the sails of the greater men who ruled the world
Still you my best friend
And after a good good drunk
You and me
Wake up and make love after a deep sleep
Where I was dreaming
I was dreaming of a dreamgirl, dreamgirl, dreamgirl, dreamgirl
Well I was feeling like a creep
As I watched you asleep
Face down in the grass
In the park in the middle of a hot afternoon
Your top was untied
And I thought 'how nice it'll be the fall of your sweat down your spine'
You're my best friend
Or after a good good drunk
You and me
Wake up and make love after a deep sleep
Where I was dreaming
I was dreaming of a dreamgirl, dreamgirl, dreamgirl, dreamgirl
Caught by the wave my back to the ocean
It knocks me off feeling, just as I find my footing
Here you come again, dreamgirl, oh dreamgirl
That's all dreamgirl, but a dreamgirl, dreamgirl, oh wait dreamgirl
In my dreams dreamgirl, I'm dreaming dream girl
Deep in, deep in

The wind from the sails of the greater men who ruled the world
should be
The wind from the sails of the greedy men who ruled the world
And I thought 'how nice it'll be the fall of your sweat down your spine'
should be
And I thought 'how nice it'd be to follow the sweat down your spine'
As I watched you asleep.
Face down in the grass,
In the park in the middle of a hot afternoon.
Your top was untied,
And I thought 'how nice it'll be the fall of your sweat down your spine.'
Love that part, it just shows how mezmerized he is and how in love he is with this woman who is his best friend, his other half, an amazing companion. its just nice how he shows how IN LOVE he is with her still.
"I would dig a hole all the way to China,
Unless of course I was there,
Then I'd dig my way home."
Matthews is speaking of the constant struggle to overcome the unsatisfaction that everyone has in life, that no matter where you are no matter how rich you are, how beautiful of a wife you have, everyone complains at some point about their situation.
I think when he says,
"If by digging, I could steal,
The wind from the sails of the greater men who ruled the world."
Matthews is talking about how if he could get past this constant unsatisfaction of daily life that the leash of conformity and money would no longer be so tight or there at all and that society would no longer base the "greater men" on how much money they have, but how much heart and love they share (like Dave does with his music).
I believe the rest is not only about having a dream girl to share his life with but its a metaphor to life and its daily surprises and how your life should be when money didn't rule the world and how it can only be a dream but people cannot reach this dream in life.
The last verse:
Caught by a wave, my back to the ocean
it knocks me off my feet and
just as i find my footing
here you come again, dreamgirl
I believe refers to the inevitable consistant return to procrastination and unhapppiness, just after you find your happiness and find your dream girl, you lose it, its gone, and becomes only of what you dream of, leaving you to complain about your current situation and feelings of life.
Well I was feeling like a creep,
As I watched you asleep.
Face down in the grass,
In the park in the middle of a hot afternoon.
Your top was untied,
And I thought 'how nice it'd be to fallow the sweat down your spine.'
-Defintely my favorite line and kind of fallows the same idea as crash. From what I've heard the song is inspired by Julia Roberts which also makes sense as to why shes in the video. I guess Dave really loves her and has always thought of her as the perfect girl possibly a sliht obsession. Shes also a diehard DMB fan which is awesome. Again, this is just what I've heard. not sure of the validity.
Like some of you said, I think this song is similar to Crash..
Fantasizing about a girl that he wants/wishes he could be with.
It's a great song.
He's pretty brilliant.
Dave mixes love and lust -- but I can't see why you'd find that so disappointing. You say that there is more to love? Sure there is.....but that is the age-old misundertanding between the sexes. If you give a man who loves you lots of great sex -- you inspire him for love. And the woman is the opposite - if you give her lots of non-sex love -- then you will inspire her for SEX!
If you are dreaming of your "dreamgirl" and then you wake up -- and you have an urge to make love to the girl after that -- then SHE IS YOUR DREAMGIRL! Does that make sense? Even if the girl in your dreams looked different. Its a moment of REALIZATION!!! He is saying, "wow, she is the one!"
(Trust me on this, I'm pretty good at analyzing poetry and literature. I do this by making sure my ideas have support -- plus I stand back and just feel it! The muses do it for you too!)
