Lisa knows a girl who's been abused
It changed her philosophy in '82
She's always looking for a fight
She keeps the neighbours up all night

I go to her when I'm feeling slack
The girl's using me as a punching bag
I think that I could help her out
But the girl's got a lot to be mad about

And in the first moment of her waking up
She knows she's losing it, yeah, she's losing it
When the first cup of coffee tastes like washing up
She knows she's losing it, yeah, she's losing
Yeah, she's losing it

Lisa met Chelsea at the knocking school
Chelsea didn't feel like following the rules
So they left the place for another school
Where the boys go with boys and the girls with girls

Chelsea was the girl who's been abused
It changed her philosophy in '82
She says, "Inch for inch and pound for pound
Who needs boys when there's Lisa around?"

And in the first moment of her waking up
She knows she's losing it, yeah, she's losing it
When the first cup of coffee tastes like washing up
She knows she's losing it, yeah, she's losing it
She goes to the mirror to put on her stuff
She knows she's losing it, oh yeah, she's losing it
When she doesn't speak to anyone until four o'clock
She knows she's losing it, yeah, she's losing it
Oh yeah, she's losing it

General Comment:I think this song is about the difficulty of having a good soul and trying to help people who cant necessarily be helped. Lisa tries to help the girl who was abused but she cant, she's too nuts. Lisa then tries to help a hooker (Chelsea) who was being abused by her clients (knocking school means brothel i think - as in knocking shop, Brit slang for brothel), by getting her to move to a gay brothel but then Chelsea falls in love with Lisa, but Lisa cant love her back.

The frustrations of being a beautiful person surrounded by the mess that is life! Thats my interpretation anyway.

General Comment:When I'm listening to the second half of the first verse, I get the feeling that the "I" is from the perspective of Lisa. Since she met Chelsea who came from some abusive relationship, it's obvious that she would want to "help her out", but that can be a very difficult thing to do when Chelsea is "losing it".

Also, I've always seen the "losing it" part to be about trying to discover one's sexual identity. I speak from a bit of experience when I say that when you first begin to question your sexual identity, it definitely feels like you're losing it from time to time. It can really tear you apart when you're trying to decide where you stand, and it still occasionally gets to me even a couple years after it all started.

My Interpretation:This is a difficult song to interpret.
I'm fairly certain that "she's losing it" refers to Chelsea losing it (not Lisa).

I'm also fairly certain that it IS about young lesbians (although it's about other things too). The
line "Who needs boys when there's Lisa around" makes that pretty clear. Not to mention
"The boys go with boys and the girls with girls."

The singer (a boy) wants to get to know Chelsea better "I think that I could help here out," but she wants nothing to do with boys "The girl's using me as a punching bag."
So Lisa takes Chelsea with her to another school where they're free to be lesbians.
It's interesting that Lisa changes Chelsea's life, but Chelsea changes Lisa's life too:
"It changed her philosophy in '82." The first time we hear that line it seems to refer to Lisa, but the second time it refers to Chelsea.

It's tricky because when it says "she" or "the girl" we're never quite sure which girls it's referring to.

General Comment:I very much agree with mockingsmile. The first couple of times I listened, I thought it was about lesbianism in general, but then I came to believe it was about a girl only pretending to be a lesbian. In context, it is Chelsea. The lines "Chelsea was the girl who's been abused, it changed her philosophy in '82" infer that Chelsea was in an abusive relationship, theoretically with a man, and thus decided to try her luck with women. Apparently, it doesn't really work out as well as she hoped.

General Comment:Sometimes I think this song is about lesbian separatism, like having lesbian relationships for political reasons (which I think is a terrible idea). Lisa decides to be with Chelsea because it seems like making such a big change to her life will be really daring and make her happier, but it doesn't really work. I think "she's losing it" means either she's realizing that she can't really be attracted to a woman, or she can't have the anger at society that Chelsea has.

General Comment:I think it is about lesbians...maybe Lisa feels like she's going crazy because she can't handle the lifestyle she's fallen into, maybe she was brought up in a very conservative home and feels like her life is spiralling out of control. Awesome song.

General Comment:I think it's about lesbians AND insanity AND feminism. I wonder, though, whether "losing it" refers to losing one's mind or losing the battle, or both.

General Comment:I think it's not about lesbians. It's about insanity. Going insane, or trying hard not to go insane. Lisa is losing it. Though Chelsea is the one who should have lost it.
