Black sheep boy,
blue-eyed charmer,
head hanging with horns
from your father.

Oh,
in a cold little mirror you were grown,
by a black little wind you were blown,
alone, alone, alone.

Cold smile on your lips,
you shake and shiver.
Some animal sips where the river flows
from a black little crack in a stone.
To a crackle in a radio song,
sing along, sing along, sing along.

Warm light when your eyes
fill with laughter.
Some animal lies in the pasture,
holes in its throat where the
blood was drawn,
in its mouth where the tounge
was torn by your claws,
your claws, your claws.

I rose from a dream;
We were running
from every being
that was hunting,
but we let them get ahead of us.
We let them lie in wait for us.
We're fucked, we're fucked, we're fucked.

I rose from a dream;
I had just destroyed everything
with one crushing blow,
and I woke up and watched it go,
and I woke up and wagged my tongue.
So long, so long, so long

General Comment:What is the sound that sometimes pops up between verses? Sounds like something steam powered... I take the bus a lot, and associate the sound to the giant-ass windshield wipers that use air pressure to work.
I dunno, I really like that sound, but the bus windshield wipers are actually really fucking annoying. Strange.

General Comment:"What shall he have that killed the deer?
His leather skin and horns to wear.
    Then sing him home.
(The rest shall bear this burden.)
Take thou no scorn to wear the horn.
It was a crest ere thou wast born.
    Thy father’s father wore it,
    And thy father bore it.
The horn, the horn, the lusty horn
Is not a thing to laugh to scorn."

General Comment:Am I the only who thinks this sounds similar, guitar-wise, to Dust In The Wind (namely in the verses)?

General Comment:lol Mattis, it's weird when you find a comment you left over a year ago and forgot about isn't it? Anyway, I think this song has a very direct and heavy meaning, but we won't know what it is unless we hear about it from an Okkervil interview or something. :(

General Comment:In response to ripelivejam, i think that no one has commented this song is because most of the lyrics are pretty straight forward, with a few exceptions. For some reason, the lyrics to this song remind me of a picture for Korn, where a boy with a blank stare smiles as this rabbit-man creature hands him a teddy bear without a head. You can tell that the boy had seen some "messed up" things.. perhaps the concept of that picture is similar to this song... Growing up, what a shity drag.

General Comment:this is such an unnerving yet beautiful song, reminds me of those unsettling nightmares that just leave you staring up at the ceiling reeling... it reeks of losing innocence and gaining the cynicism of adulthood, of weeping over lost youth...

not to sound cliche but... why hasn't anyone else commented on this gorgeous song?
