Lyrics for Best Of You as interpreted by Master_of_Puppets

Best Of You Lyrics
I’ve got another confession to make
I’m your fool
Everyone’s got their chains to break
Holdin’ you

Were you born to resist or be abused?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?

Are you gone and onto someone new?
I needed somewhere to hang my head
Without your noose
You gave me something that I didn’t have
But had no use
I was too weak to give in
Too strong to lose
My heart is under arrest again
But I break loose
My head is giving me life or death
But I can’t choose
I swear I’ll never give in
I refuse

Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
You trust, you must
Confess
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Oh...

Oh...Oh...Oh...Oh...

Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
The life, the love
You die to heal
The hope that starts
The broken hearts
You trust, you must
Confess

Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?

I’ve got another confession my friend
I’m no fool
I’m getting tired of starting again
Somewhere new

Were you born to resist or be abused?
I swear I’ll never give in
I refuse

Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
You trust, you must
Confess
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Oh...

Amazing somg by an amazing band, about the most basic emotion and the inability to properly convey it - unrequited love.

He starts off the song admitting he has a confession to make - he's her fool. If they were already in a relationship, he woudn't have to confess it, he wouldn't have to own up to anything. He's confessing he loves her.

As for the "chains to break - holding you", Everyone has inhibitions about admitting their true emotions. only, some people are willing to break those "chains" or inhibitions in order to truly be happy. they were born to resist, not be abused. As for someone getting the best of you, That means, I believe, someone has garnered your love, but is unwilling to return it.

"Are you gone and on to someone new" is simply a reference to the fact she is gone for him, she loves another, they can never be.

"I needed someone to hang my head, without your noose / you gave me something that I didn't have, but had no use" is a reference to basically how bad it sucks to have unrequited love. He didn't have unrequited love before her, but It's a completely useless emotion because he knows he'll never be with her, and it blows.

"I was too weak to give in, too strong to lose" is a reference to the fact he's too weak to let her go, he refuses to (He's too strong to lose).

His heart is "under arrest" (broken), but he "breaks loose" is a testament to the indecisive nature of his emotions. He wants to let her go, it hurts to think about her, mostly because she'll never truly understand him, but he can't do it. You see this with the too weak to give in, too strong to lose. You can feel it in the riff during the verses - even the riffs are indecisive, scaling up and down.

"My head is giving me life or death, but i can't choose" is just a testament to the aformentioned, as is "I swear I'll never give in, i refuse"

and then the most important part of the song, the fact that the speakers faith in his future happiness is completely gone, due to the pain he feels, he would die to heal his broken heart. You can tell this is unrequited love from two very telling lines in this song, first being "I've got another confession to make..." and the other being "the hope that starts the broken hearts". He hopes for, pines for her, and when he is dissapointed his heart is broken.

The song, interestingly enough, bears close resemblance to "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock...

firstly, both are confessions of unrequited love

both exaggerate their crises

both display a pathetic inability to properly convey ones hopes and dreams - "not once does the speaker actually tell her he loves her"

both shun Freytag's pyramid, as most modernists chose to, hoping to display real life occurances more accurately. Even the riffs show no general order...

I could go into greater detail, but this is what I've got time for...

This is just my interpretation, but I have the feeling it's the right one.

This is an amazing song, i've just recently got into Foo Fighters in a big way. I think this song is all about a girl moving on from a guy, and he can't take it.

"I was too weak to give in
Too strong to lose" - it sounds to me like he wanted to make it work, but he was too proud to.

"Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel"- this sounds like frustration at maybe some other guy hurtin this girl, n grohl cant do anythin about it.

but near the end of the song, it sorta seems like hes learnin how to handle it n hes not gunna take it from her anymore - "i'm no fool".

anyhoo, its a gr8 song :)

I think the meanings by n1nfan and amymarie were the ones that stood out for me. I think it's about relationships and the line 'Were you born to resist or be abused?' is a key one. Sometimes in life there's actually a time where you need someone to be mean to you(be abused.) Like say your boss can't always be nice, he's got to be mean to get through sometimes, to make the situations work to get the best out of you. But also it refers to other relationships. Sometimes to get the best out of someone, you have to be mean. That's why there's people out there into sado-masochism and masochism. I also think the line 'die to heal' means like being reborn and having the old parts of you die, so the new one would be better.

I think kingjojo14 pretty much got it.

This just happened to me. The singer is telling a friend or saying this to himself that he knows he is in love with a girl that has just broken his heart and played him like a fool. The girl and the singer have hung out several times but they were doing it as friends. After a while he started falling for her and she made it seem as though she was doing the same. By singing he is trying to either tell himself or the jealous friend that this girl will do the same thing again.

Think what you want people, i just threw out my 2 cents.

I think the lyrics to this song are so deep that anyone with intellegence and emotion can get everything and anything they want out of it. The popular translation, of course, relates to a female that did you wrong. I felt that at first, but now I only believe that to be an entry point.

Today, I apply it to the WASPs I work for and the fact that they gave me a book called "Who Moved My Cheese?" to read. I read it and typed up a report and told them that you keep moving my cheese because this is your country and even though we are both white, you are a Blue-Blooded Protestant and I am a Catholic and you are getting the best of me and you don't want me to challenge your authority.

I whipped the book straight into his Adam's Apple and while he was gasping for air I grabbed him by the back of his head and kneed him in his face.

Standing above him I screamed: "I'VE GOT ANOTHER CONFESSION TO MAKE! I'M NO FOOL! I'M GETTING TIRED OF STARTING AGAIN!!! SOMEWHERE NEW!!!!!

But, of course, I had to start somewhere new, because I was subsequently fired. But when I went to see the boys open for Dylan last November I sang this song as loud as I could right along with Dave and it meant something to me.

I would like to encourage everyone to compare and contrast this song to U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For."

"Are you gone and onto someone new?
I needed somewhere to hang my head
Without your noose
You gave me something that I didn’t have
But had no use"

That part has the most kick-assical drum/guitar.. bit part thingy in the background but for some reason didn't use it in the rest of the song.. anyway

yeah, love, heartbreak, feelings for the person who left you, and getting over them.
OKAY, next song!

does this song seem to have religious undertones to anyone else? its like pure angst, for LIFE- "were you born to resist, or be abused?" it doesn't have to be about a romanitc relationship to me, its almost saying to me "life is precious, understand?"

Seeing that I'm the 130th or so person to put what they think the meaning of this song is, chances are this may never be read. lol Anyways, to me the whole first part of the album is about the ending of a relationship. From In Your Honor to DOA. In Your Honor is the whole "I’d do anything for you" last ditch effort to try and save the relationship. No Way Back is the, "there is no way we're getting back together" song, and DOA, the "I’m finally over you" song. As for The Best Of You, this song is the whole "wondering why he or she broke my previously broken heart. It starts out with the admission that he or she still has you wrapped around their finger, and that you would still do anything for if they asked. Then you ask them why they broke it off. Dave goes on to ask tons of questions as to why this happened, and the most frequently asked question is of course, "is someone getting the best of you?" To me this means "did you fall for someone else, are they now getting your love, the best things you have to offer? After all these questions he or she still will not answer you, hence the "confess!" part before the chorus kicks in again. To me this whole song is about getting the answer as to why this breakup had to happen. If anyone reads this please give me feed back this is my very first post. thanks

AT some point you stop tolerating crap. I love this song. This was the song I listened too everytime my ex would call telling me she loved me but just wanting me back into the drama of her life. This song pushed me to end all communication and concentrate on my future.

I love this song is not a complete "dis Her" song. He starts out by calling himself to fool. He knows he's shares blame.

WTF.

This song IS about Kurt Kobain (and NO, it is NOT referring to Kobain taking the best of him). He is referring to Courtney Love taking the best of Kobain.

The title of their album, "In Your Honor"-- was dedicated to Kobain. So, if anyone thinks that Grohl would name an album THAT in order to diss Kurt Kobain-- then you're out of your mind.

I think the cool thing about lyrics is that you can interpret them in different ways to meet you at different moments. When this song came out I was in a mediocre relationship and the song challenged me because I kept hearing, "Is someone getting the best OF YOU?" as in, Are you giving them your best?" and I had to be honest and say no. Then, it finally hit me months and months later that it meant "Is someone getting the best of you", like Are you taking up emotional energy thinking of someone who doesn't deserve the time of day? By this time we'd broken up and I'd since discovered he had been cheating on me over a period of two years and this line AGAIN helped me to deal with getting over such a huge terrible discovery but for completely different reasons...all because I interpreted the same line differently!

I look at this song a little differently. Maybe bc it means something different to my life..I think it is about two people who really see each other but can't be together, because of other circumstances (maybe one or both already have lovers). The person is jealous that someone else is getting all the best of the other person. "i was to weak to give in, too strong to lose." To me it is about the inner struggle to remain true to oneself and their feelings. "I needed somewhere to hang my head, without your noose. you gave me something that i didn't have, but had no use." They can't use this person's love bc they are already taken. The video to this is awesome, i think everyone can relate to it in some way.

this song is about someone in an abusive and/or otherwise unfulfilling relationship, and them finally getting the strength and perspective to get out of it. By saying they're no fool, that the pain they feel is real, that living with a broken heart is no way to live at all, they are finally determined and whole enough to live without the dependent/unfulfilling relationship. And lastly, a relationship is not worth giving your best unless the other person is giving you their best in return.

I think the song is about a girl who's been with other men in her life and it's affecting the relationship between the writer and the girl. There's a loss of trust because the writer for some reason can't be sure if she instigated it or was taken advantage of. If she instigated it, there's the concern that she's using him as well. Either way there's anger over the inability to change the past and having no control over someone else's past decisions. The writer is frustrated because he's apparently started over with this person and found her other relationships, concurrent or not, to be a deal breaker, but it will be just as frustrating to have to start over again with someone new, only to find their imperfection and humanity all over again. It's like a round about way of accepting life and someone else for who they are.
Purity even in our society is a tragic thing; you want to be the only one but even if you love someone truly who's been with other people before you, there's this block to real intimacy because you're always wondering if someone else from their past is occupying their thoughts, dreams, and fantasies, getting the best of them, which in turn controls you. You're not their only; they've already been joined with someone else on an ultimate level and you're getting what's left over. It feels like something that was rightfully yours was stolen from you. I think the writer is at a point where he's having to decide if her past decisions are a deal breaker or if he's so in love with her he's willing to forgive her and commit. forgiveness requires some level of repentance and I think it's why he keeps saying, "you must confess." Really tragic if you think about the finality of the decisions the girl made that the writer had no control over and are now breaking his heart. Hopefully love always wins.

When they played this live in Hollywood for the Skin & Bones dvd he dedicate this song for his sister Lisa. So maybe it's not about love between a boyfriend - girlfriend, but more the love you have for you family members.

I see it as he encourages her to find someone new, or if she's really happy or satisfied in her relationship when he sings is someone getting the best of you (like saying you can get something better).

I havn't analyzed the lyrics at all really but since he dedicated it to his sister it might be something like that. Any thoughts?

i don't want to hate you anymore, shamara...but every time i hear this song i remember how much you loved me...and then how much you hurt me...and i know it is selfish, but i would rather hate you than miss you the way i do...you have taken everything from me...my time, my strength, my heart, even my faith...i know i will be fine in time, but until then the pain of loving you is so real that it is overwhelming...you had the best of me...is someone now getting the best of you...

The wonderful thing about music is that, regardless of original intention (which is usually awesome), the song can mean many different things to many different people. I see this song (as related to me) as society. In my eyes, the society, peoples general beliefs, whether is sterotypes, certain religions that believe they conquer all, stigmas or cliches get in the way and put a halter on what you want. I have great feelings for someone society would reject to date me because of a significant age difference. I'm up against society and I refuse to give in. I believe that when I doubt the fact that I can make is with this person, I am a fool to society, giving in under pressure. It's a beautiful song. I think it can be applied in so many ways..
