Best Of You Lyrics
I’ve got another confession to make
I’m your fool Everyone’s got their chains to break Holdin’ you Were you born to resist or be abused? Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you? Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you? Are you gone and onto someone new? I needed somewhere to hang my head Without your noose You gave me something that I didn’t have But had no use I was too weak to give in Too strong to lose My heart is under arrest again But I break loose My head is giving me life or death But I can’t choose I swear I’ll never give in I refuse Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you? Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you? Has someone taken your faith? Its real, the pain you feel You trust, you must Confess Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you? Oh... Oh...Oh...Oh...Oh... Has someone taken your faith? Its real, the pain you feel The life, the love You die to heal The hope that starts The broken hearts You trust, you must Confess Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you? Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you? I’ve got another confession my friend I’m no fool I’m getting tired of starting again Somewhere new Were you born to resist or be abused? I swear I’ll never give in I refuse Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you? Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you? Has someone taken your faith? Its real, the pain you feel You trust, you must Confess Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you? Oh... |

First off, let's take into acount what kind of meanings Grohl's songs have. He likes to be playfully crative with how blunt they can be (see "All My Life"). He is usually explicit about voice changes (See "Everlong"). Also, he loves to sing like characters with interesting perspectives (see "Monkeywrench").
So, what happens when we take the lyrics all too litterally and liniarly? Well, a total contradiction. But just the contradiction, my sister pointed out, that was to be expected of the steriotypical bull-headed male (See the anime "Inuyasha" to use her example). It seems to me, Grohl might have known someone who was actually like this or just wanted to play with the "playa" persona and that he was funny enough to justify giving us a peek inside his head as he struggles with his unmanly feelings for the girl he dumped. So without further adue, let us review:
>I’ve got another confession to make
>I’m your fool
he's treating his passion for his woman like a thorny crown, so to speek
>Everyone’s got their chains to break
>Holdin’ you
his chain to break is holding onto her
>Were you born to resist or be abused?
now he addresses her directly, sepperating people into two goups: those who won't get tied down (like him), and those who are abused (presumably like her)
>Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the >best of you?
>Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the >best of you?
and if she is the type to be abused, is someone taking advantage of her now that he's left her...managing to speak down to her and kinda sounding concerned all at once
>Are you gone and onto someone new?
confirming the above, so have you found someone new yet?
>I needed somewhere to hang my head
>Without your noose
>You gave me something that I didn’t have
>But had no use
note, past tense, now he's explaining why he left, she was choking him with commitment, but his explaining so suddenly makes him sound just a tad guilty, even though he claims he had no use for the relationship with her
>I was too weak to give in
>Too strong to lose
here's the confession moment, and like the steriotypical macho man, blink and you'll miss it: he wasn't a big enough man to "give in" to her, and too strong to lose, sounds like our guy's pretty stuborn
>My heart is under arrest again
so now he's with some new girl, why is he bother singing this to the ex he broke up with
>But I break loose
and there's our answer, he's trying to come off like a player, but what he's really saying, is that he's going to be single again. odd thing to tell the ex you couldn't stand...
>My head is giving me life or death
>But I can’t choose
he sees commitment as death, but now he's actually considering it, this tells us a lot about why this song is set at this moment of his life
>I swear I’ll never give in
>I refuse
but just before he can commit, he reminds himself, he's one to "resist" not "be abused"
>Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the >best of you?
>Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the >best of you?
and the concern goes back to his ex, can't get her out of his mind, mostly in terms of jealousy so far, masking it as concern, that someone else like him could come along and hurt her.
>Has someone taken your faith?
>Its real, the pain you feel
now he's gone and validated what he first put her down for, her "faith" in people, and in him which caused the "pain [she] feels"
>You trust, you must
>Confess
now he demands she give him his answer, is she with someone else, because if she is, he insists they'll only hurt her, the thing he ironically has already done
>Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the >best of you?
>Oh...
>Oh...Oh...Oh...Oh...
yay vocal bridge
>Has someone taken your faith?
>Its real, the pain you feel
expanding on that "faith" of hers
>The life, the love
it's in how she lives, her faith in true love
>You die to heal
remember, "death" above was how he thought of commitment, but she needs it to heal, which seems so irrational to him
>The hope that starts
>The broken hearts
everything entailed in the process, her hope in him and his shattering it, the same thing he insistswill happen with anyone else she gets with
>You trust, you must
>Confess
still, for someone who doesn't care about her he's pretty concerned about her being hurt again
>Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the >best of you?
>Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the >best of you?
but how can he take her back, he certainly can't admit that he was wrong, but he's going insane with the mere thought she could be "taken advantage of" by someone else
>I’ve got another confession my friend
>I'm no fool
and now we come full circle, from the break up, to the reconsiliation
>I’m getting tired of starting again
>Somewhere new
he's sick of going through the charade all the time, maybe it's time he just picked someone...
>Were you born to resist or be abused?
that's right, she's the weak one who's going to get abused unless he helps her
>I swear I’ll never give in
>I refuse
and there he is being the strong one, strong enough to protect her if they got back together, and he'd still be a free man, just staying with her because he's just too bored of moving on (is this guy full of it, or what?)
>Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the >best of you?
>Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the >best of you?
>Has someone taken your faith?
>Its real, the pain you feel
>You trust, you must
>Confess
>Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the >best of you?
the obligitory last chorus leaving open the question translating to "so, are you with anyone?" it's far from an appology, but from a character like this, it's closer than we might expect to get.
>Oh...
and there's my presentation of me sister's interpretation, please consider it. if you have any questions or comments, just send me an e-mail.

1 other thing: in the beginning confession he's clearly talking to she for whom he is a fool, and then when that returns he's talking to that bud of his... i think i had a further point to make but i need to eat now

Then in the opening stanza: "every1s got their chains to break holdin you"-- the most natural assumption would be that by "you" he means "them" (or conversely means "you've all got your chains"). Alternatively though, he could be sayin that a buncha ppl have chains on the girl... like maybe they have bonds with her that turn out to be restricting or hurtful, especially for her...idk
i like the stanza with "too weak to give in, to strong to lose", the idea that his inability to separate himself from her is both a point of strength and weakness. Talking about his heart under arrest and breaking loose, i think he means that he sometimes breaks loose (like it's an ongoing, rollercoaster kind of affair)...continuing the dialogue of internal conflict. And "my head is giving me life or death, but i can't choose" is to highlight the vastness of the described conflict. The last 2 lines "I swear I'll never resist-- i refuse" emphasizes that while he's not moving either direction, it's not for a lack of emotion, but the poisonous concentration and explosive quantity of it.

Take the idea that this is about politics and mostly about war. Think of Iraq or Afghanistan and all of the pain surrounding these events for those living in the countries.
The song is sung with the the type of passion that surrounds some of the heights of politics and protests against events and so on.
For example, if you get into the mindset of the ''suicide bomber'', then every lyric, every word fits the thoughts. There are mentions of dying for your cause.
This is not about sexuality at all to me. It's about feelings of pain and horror when there is country running its foreign policy all over the world.
The fact that it was 2005 after many events surrounding the Iraq war ans so on make this an even more potent explanation.
''Has someone taken your faith?'' Like the way Islam (one example) has been shown and the offensive Mohammed cartoons.
''The pain is real'' --- is almost a wake up call to the other countries, that they do feel pain and the so called freedom is useless ''had no use''.
Its like screaming that it's not only you who lose lives, that they are not some uncharacterically evil group. This is a political song. One for the poor, for those subjected to recent wars.
This won't be a popular theory, but it's far more meaningful that teenage sexuality. It's life and death. It's hope and dreams and never giving in, no matter how far they push you.
The song is almost like someone in a country starting these wars realising what's happened and saying to the people they understand. This is a song for the powerless in places like Iraq and Afghanistan.
Not many will like this song meaning, but if you like trash, then go along with the others, but if you like something a bit more raw and not pretentious then you'd prefer this meaning.

the popularity of "she hates me" is for being Vulgar, but just look at some of it's lyrics. no need to talk anymore:
Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
The life, the love
You die to heal
The hope that starts
The broken hearts
You trust, you must
Confess

Its also about people who stop you achieveing what you believe you can. Its about people who discourage you, don’t believe in you and make you feel worthless. These people get ‘the best of you’, they can ruin you, but this song is about fighting back and breaking yourself free from their grip.
Great line to people who go through this kind of shit - ‘were you born to resist or be abused? I swear I’ll never give in I refuse’.

Too strong to lose"
This is my favorite line in the entire song. :3
To thereisonlytruth: I can't fully agree. I never believe posts like that. =/ It may fit, yes, and I agree entirely that it is extremely similar--but a lot of love songs have the possibility to fit the war, if only because the US and Iraq actually are currently going through an "abusive relationship" (the US being the abuser).
bah...that probably doesn't make much sense. Forgive me XD;;
