Lyrics for Best Of You as interpreted by Master_of_Puppets

Best Of You Lyrics
I’ve got another confession to make
I’m your fool
Everyone’s got their chains to break
Holdin’ you

Were you born to resist or be abused?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?

Are you gone and onto someone new?
I needed somewhere to hang my head
Without your noose
You gave me something that I didn’t have
But had no use
I was too weak to give in
Too strong to lose
My heart is under arrest again
But I break loose
My head is giving me life or death
But I can’t choose
I swear I’ll never give in
I refuse

Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
You trust, you must
Confess
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Oh...

Oh...Oh...Oh...Oh...

Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
The life, the love
You die to heal
The hope that starts
The broken hearts
You trust, you must
Confess

Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?

I’ve got another confession my friend
I’m no fool
I’m getting tired of starting again
Somewhere new

Were you born to resist or be abused?
I swear I’ll never give in
I refuse

Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
You trust, you must
Confess
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Oh...

Everyone who said this isn't about Nirvana, you're WRONG. Dave Grohl said in a radio piece that this was the "first song he'd ever written on guitar" and it was written shortly after he'd joined Nirvana as their sixth drummer. He's only recently started to speak out about Cobain, revealing that the band never bonded as family as many bands do, and that their relationship was only musical. He also said that there were times when Cobain was downright disappointed with Grohl's drumming talents. This song chronicles Dave's early feelings about Nirvana, and I guess he was holding onto this song for a special occasion, such as the FF's 10th anniversary.

Call me psycho, but I burned this song 18 times onto one CD, so I didn't have to keep pressing the button to hear the song again. Have it as my ringtone as well. This is the song of my life... just had a very painful relationship end (kinda). My ex says that this is his song, not mine. So we are both feeling a lot right now and these words say it all. We have gotten the best of each other and don't know how to give it back or even take it all back right now.

I think the song is more than just about a love relationship. It encompasses a broad spectrum of relationships. It can speak to those abused as children and wind up in abusive relationships at some point themselves.

i like the lyrics-- im a sucker for a little bit of open jeaousy. Dave seems to be flawed enough to write a song with an edge and feeling. But i wish he would let his grunge roots go, its out and i like him better as a singer than a yeller.

I relate to this song in so many ways. First off this is an amazing song!!! The vocals on it are absolutely amazing. To me the song is talking about a guy who was in a relationship that didn't work out. "The best of you" means to me that was he getting the persons "best" or was there someone else towards the end of the relationship that was better (or thought to be) and therefore was getting the "best." Not to rattle on about myself, but this type of situation relates to me because at the beginning of the summer I had the best relationship I have ever had, but then as college ended and my girlfriend (at the time) went home for the summer. We had been dating for about five months and things were great..or so I thought. We were doing the long distance thing, but we weren't too far apart (only about 5 hours). I went and saw her one weekend and it was just awkward the whole time. To me it was like she was trying to send me a message that she didn't want to be in the relationship anymore, but just didn't want to say it. I went home after the weekend and things just continued to wither away. After we broke up and the summer went on I began to think that maybe there was just someone else there (after all when you are away from home for two years at college people you thought you didn't like can change and be great when you go back). This is how the song relates to me. Was someone getting the "best" while I tought I was???..If you happened to read all of this thank you and I look forward to further input towards the song. Have a great day:):):)

I love the way this song captures the essence of frustration. Although it seems to be a rather angry song, with the rapid-fire beat and the shouting vocals, I get more of a sense of the utter frustration of witnessing someone you love choosing to be with someone else who is not right for them. At the beginning, the singer swears he'll never give in. But toward the end, he warns that he won't be able to hold out forever. "I'm getting tired of starting again".

its the bittersweet end of a damaging relationship-- you are faced with the choice to be abused or to resist.. i feel that this song shows the true battle with oneself when you are trying to end a relationship and move on. I think he's admitting someone IS getting the best of him- and now he is torn between "breaking loose", "swearing to never give in".. but expressing that despite the "hope that starts" the pain he feels IS more real and hurtful than he ever expected. He's made his choice to not give it one more shot "tired of starting again" like most couples do.. but the fact that he has chose n to finalize the relationship ("my heart is under arrest, but i break loose") before it got any worse, is proving to be harder than a relationship that ends due to circumstances.

IMO you wouldn't get sick of a song if the song has a deep meaning to you. The person was right that grunge is not in trend, but I think it was perfect for this type of song. Kudos for Dave to come out and sing about the insecurities and struggles in life. It's much appreciated! ^^

To me the song means just what it means. Sometimes people that love each other can hurt each other, can play games and abuse eachother. But when you love someone even if they are hurting you it is hard to break away from that and once you have put so much or so many years into a relationship its hard to start again somewhere new, which really if it's that bad, is what you have to do because you are so drawn to that person. This song to me is about an abusive relationship. And really, that is what it's about. me and my husband love this song, i'm 22 and he'll be 31 in Nov. we have a 2 yr old and before we got married were in a 4 and a half year on and off drugged up and at times very abusive relationship. Eventhough we're both clean now and happy... we love this song :) PEACE

Awesome FF song. I can somewhat relate to this song in the fact I'm too nice to a lot of people and it seems that everyone tends to take advantage of me, such as getting me to do stuff for them that I don't wanna do. To me, this song is about how we fall victim to the ones close to us and that people get the best of us.

It's about a friendship, that's under duress. It doesn't matter whether or not Dave is speaking with a girl or boy, but someone he actually cares about, but resents the emotional attachment. The conflict arises, because Dave senses a burden in his friend, which is compromising him/her. Dave demands to know this burden, because he doesn't want to lose this friend...Friends like this are obviously hard to comeby...Dave Grohl understands the value of friendship, because he's the kewlest guy in the world...Even if Kurt was alive, Dave's still kewler.
