One hoped they’d break the patent when they die me in stride.
(one hoped they’d die break the mold.)
Just a simple steel specimen, truly empty down inside.
With a copper core wound veins, a pumping cold hydraulic heart.
Bellows cycle air on rhythms, rhythms fixed within my code.
It’s easier to bow than keep these knees locked tight,
tight like the rivets in my skin.
My pulse reverberates through this malleable shell,
With scars from shaping.
My insides grind their gears.
Abrasive churning, I’m so conductive.
It’s always been a task with such low impedance.
My tendons tend to rust with time while wires misplace their currents.
So I will flee the factory and pray you to dismantle me.
Someone will find my makers; I’m coming apart at seams.
I’ll cauterize myself back together again.

That is the other use of bowing. Bowing is a form of submitting to someone else. This seems like a more likely explanation that the one i previously proposed because it fits into rest song. The rest however about him only doing it because its easier than the alternative I still firmly believe.
nobody is gonna put this kind of hard work and metaphorical genius into a song that is solely about a robot. Thats just bull shit.
This song is about how someone either made him (the speaker) or convinced him (my money's on the later) to change. However once he had changed he realized that it wasnt really him. While this new person looks like him, on the inside he is empty since he is a superficial creation of others.
He uses the robot analogy to represent how empty he ifeels. Since a robot can perform tasks but has no drive or emotions that makes a human.
"It's easier to bow than keep these knees locked tight"
I think here he is kinda fessing up to some of his wrongs. Admitting to what he has done solely because it'd take more effort not to. When someone bows they're are taking credit for a piece of work but at the same time he's expressing a kind of pride in his wrongs by bowing rather than just stepping forward. At the same time he realizes he needs to remain this robot b/c the alternative is committing these wrongs again.
"My insides grind their gears.
Abrasive churning, I'm so conductive.
It's always been a task with such low impedance.
My tendons tend to rust with time while wires misplace their currents
So I will flee the factory, and pray you to dismantle me."
Now i think he's referring to the new him falling apart here. Mainly b/c he's reverting to his robot metaphor, I think the robot is starting give way to the old him, but here's a kind off contradiction b/c at the beginning he's complaining about being turned into a robot but here he's begging for someone to fix this "robot". This makes me believe that he really wanted to change into this robot (or at least remain it) even though it wasnt him b/c the robot is a better person then he could ever be. As the robot he complains about who he is but without ever really wanting to go back to being himself. This leads to a kind of self hatred and resentment to the people who changed him that i think is felt when you listen to this song
These are my personal thought on the song. I'm quite new to TREOS so i might still have to develop and understanding for them. All i can guarantee here is that this is in no way simply a song about life robot as explained by some of the other people here. Being a robot is part of it (although it is not a literal robot but rather a metaphor for a corporate zombie) but to say that is all there is to the song is to unjustly simplify a lyrical masterpiece.
Secondly, this song is quite obviously about conforming, as many of you have touched on..It's dealing with the world and its population being "manufactured" to a specific template; created to look, think, and act a certain way, and each one is "truly empty down inside" without a single individual thought.. and he's stating that he's been made to be one of them, but something's malfunctioning ("somebody call the maker, I'm coming apart at the seams") and he's breaking away from that conformity, and breaking down, becoming an individual. He's escaping, or "Fleeing The Factory" ^_~
why the hell would they write a song about robots?
"One hoped they'd break the patent when they die cast me in stride.
Just a simple steel specimen, truly empty down inside.
With copper-core wound veins, a pumping cold hydraulic heart,
Bellows cycle air on rhythms, rhythms fixed within my code."
He's saying he wished he was unique because everyone is the same; conformists and unoriginal. Everyone else controls him like he isn't even human.
"It's easier to bow than keep these knees locked tight
Like the rivets in my skin.
My pulse reverberates through this malleable shell,
With scars from shaping.
My pulse reverberates through this malleable shell,
With scars from breaking shell."
He'd rather stay a follower because it's easier even though he isn't happy but he can feel himself needing to break out from it.
"My insides grind their gears.
Abrasive churning, I'm so conductive.
It's always been a task with such low impedance.
My tendons tend to rust with time while wires misplace their currents
So I will flee the factory, and pray you to dismantle me."
He is getting frustrated with being this 'robot' and that he could've always broken out but now he is and is hoping that he won't be the only one but he is a martyr.
[chorus]
"Someone find my maker; I'm coming apart at the seams.
I'll cauterize myself back together again."
He's almost changing his mind, that maybe he should just stay how he is instead of fighting it, so he'll sacrifice his freedom for this
the robot is a metaphor for conformists. your stupid.
