Lyrics for Mr. November as interpreted by countzero

Mr. November Lyrics
This is nothing like it was in my room
In my best clothes
Trying to think of you
This is nothing like it was in my room
In my best clothes

The English are waiting
And I don't know what to do
In my best clothes
This is when I need you

The English are waiting
And I don't know what to do
In my best clothes

I'm the new blue blood, I'm the great white hope
I'm the new blue blood

I won't fuck us over, I'm Mr. November
I'm Mr. November, I won't fuck us over
[repeat]

I wish that I believed in fate
I wish I didn't sleep so late
I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders
[repeat]

I'm the new blue blood, I'm the great white hope
I'm the new blue blood

I won't fuck us over, I'm Mr. November
I'm Mr. November, I won't fuck us over
[repeat]

I wish that I believed in fate
I wish I didn't sleep so late
I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders
[repeat]

I'm the new blue blood, I'm the great white hope
I'm the new blue blood
I won't fuck us over, I'm Mr. November
I'm Mr. November, I won't fuck us over

It's about the pressures of being president....
I'm the new blue blood (as in royalty) im the great white hope
and mr. november... the elections are in november
The english are waiting and i don't know what to do... it all kinda makes sense if you listen to it with that in mind. the only part i kinda dont get is the "I used to be carried on the arms of cheerleaders" I think its that he just to be captain of the football team or something and those are the kind of people who become president.. like the really popular people.. and now that he is, its really hard on him.. "this is nothing like it used to be in my room." and he's in his best clothes... etc....

actually, this song has nothing to do with the president. it's about being under pressure while recording this album. reggie jackson was known as "mr. october" because he always saved his best for last, aka at the end of the season, so "mr. november" is his way of saying he's saving his best effort for last. i think i read that this song was actually the last one written for this record. the line "the english are waiting and i don't know what to do" is in reference to their label, beggar's banquet, which is a uk based label.

I kinda like the president explanation better. Though a combination of the two would probably be best.

when I first heard this song, it seemed to me like he was a football player. November is when the high school season ends, the team color of his team was likely blue.... But the record label thing makes more sense.

Some interesting interpretations of this song. I don't know what its actually about but I have two points to make. First I know it's common knowledge that Reggie Jackson is Mr. October but, being from NY, I don't think that its as widely known that Derek Jeter is Mr. November for the same reason as Reggie except the season now ends in November. Second I was wondering why the album was called Alligator as well and thiink its because of the line in City Middle "I wanna go gator around the warm beds of beginners". It seems like the album is a testament to being a lowdown dirty creature that devours women. Just my take ofcourse.

when he said "gator" in the line "I wanna go gator around the warm beds of beginners" he was using it as a synonym for explore or going crazy sort of. so maybe the title of the album is alligator as a metaphor for an exploration or an explorer of some sort. or possibly someone who is going crazy. ahh I don't know.

He used to be admired by others back in high school - a football star likely, a "great white hope" carried in the arms of cheerleaders, with blue blood - a real 'Merican boy. Now he's a nobody, a loser. He dreams, sleeps too late, and is terrified of the world. But he has something to do. Something that other people are counting on him for. Trying to convince himself he can do it, He sais he won't fuck it up because he's "Mr. November," godamnit, and don't you forget it... But really he's gunna fuck it up because he's a loser now.

Ok how about this.. and bare in mind Im not from the states, I think its about the American War of Independence, "The English are waiting" , "Im the New Blue Blood" , colours, "Im the great white hope" , He is a leader, "its nothing like it was in his room" standing looking at himself in the mirrior in his uniform "his best clothes", "I used to sleep late , lying in the arms of cheer leaders", he was a dreamer, Now he is ready to go into battle, itsthe real thing, full of determination, "he wont fuck anyone over" , he will be true , "Im Mr November", the americans won the war in mid october, A new Beginning perhaps? Well thats what I get out of it, Great Song regardless!

I like impacts explanation, about it being about his pressures of doing the record, I had a similar take on Secret Meeting. The first verse could be describing the song writer thing of composing alone in a room with close emotions and comfort and then having to translate that emotion night after night in front of loads of people in a totally cold atmoshphere. The rest of the song is living up to this responsibility - "I wish I believed in fate" is a classic way of desribing his doubts and insecurites, as in he wishes he could just pretend everything was out of his control.

Blue Blood and Great White Hope are both movies that deal with sports, and an underdog type situation. Now, Blue Blood, a horse racing movie that is old, is not really so inspiring because apparently the horse doesn't win... But I think that the cheerleaders comment and November being high school football playoff time points toward the sports hero imagery... I don't think it's just a song about sports, but I think the imagery and the universality of that feeling is key to what makes this song r o c k.

Blue blood means someone from a well off or noble upbringing. Since most of the rest of the song seems to be about sports and probably football, I think it is more a jab at white American jock culture, which does tend to be passed down within families like nobility.

'I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders'. He is trying to let someone know that he once was a success, that he once was admired and respected. This may be to reassure himself of his potential for success, im quite convinced that 'the english are waiting' refers to the British label, and so on the brink of a monentous decision he is reflecting in past glory. Im the new blue blood/great white hope seems to tie in with this idea also. He is saying these things in an attempt to convinve himself that he is capable of greatness, possibly 'new blue blood' of the alternative rock industry... its a tough call. Amazingly powerful song, sadly Boxer isn't quite up to alligator standard in my opinion. Slow show is already a firm favourite though

I interpreted this as a "comeback" sort of song. Like descendent said, he used to be admired.

"I'm the new blue blood." Blue blood refers to a long family tradition of wealth, so to be the New Blue Blood, it's like starting over a new tradition of success and wealth.

"The Great White Hope" was the nickname given to a boxer who was supposed to be able to beat African American boxer Jack Johnson, but lost which is another reference to failure.

"I won't fuck us over, I'm Mr November." is like the other Reggie Jackson references, but for the song, the protagonist has messed something up in a crucial situation but assures that he will make it okay.

Jackson always pulled through in the Playoffs in October, but the protagonist is Mr November and will make it work out after he's already failed.

No, this is not about the president, not about the american revolutionary war, not about baseball. He was a highschool quarterback. November is playoff season for football. He was carried in the arms of cheerleaders. He was a hero. This character has peaked way too early. He's had his big accomplishment already, so now he sleeps late, thinking he doesn't really need to put in the effort. but now he is in dire straits, and he almost wishes he could give up (wish that I believed in fate). "The English are waiting" could be a reference to the Beggars Banquet label pressure, that's a very good observation, but I think it could be a more general or metaphorical reference. But anyway, he's so desperate not to fail, but he's having a hard time convincing himself he has a chance, and when he says "I'm Mr. November", he's not telling us, he's telling himself, trying to convince himself that he's not completely fucked.
I want to hear what people think about the line "in my best clothes". I think it could mean the pressure is business-related, like he's meeting with a potential client or something. "nothing like it was in my room" I'm not sure about, but it doesn't seem to be that weighty of a line.
This song is so interesting because I would normally have no sympathy for some jock high school quarterback, I would almost want to see him fail, but the way he sings "I won't fuck us over", so desperate and serious, it's really affecting, emotionally. We're seeing someone trying to allay immense anxiety.

I think all the replies so far have been pretty well thought out.

I just listen to this song and think about how I feel when I'm under pressure especially at my office job.

I read an interview with one of the band members saying they wrote it around when John Kerry lost the last election. Blue blood=democrats. Mr. November, because the election is in november. "I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders" could have to do with all the cheerleaders around Kerry prior to the election. Not to say there aren't a bunch of other meanings.
