Karen, take me to the nearest famous city middle where they hang the lights
Where it's random and it's common versus common, la la la
Karen, take me to the nearest famous city middle where they hang the lights
Where it's random and it's common versus common, la la la
I got 500 in twenties, and I've got a ton of great ideas
I'm really worked up
I'm on a good mixture, I don't wanna to waste it
I'm on a good mixture, I do not wanna waste it
I wanna go gator around the warm beds of beginners
I'm really worked up

I have weird memories of you wearing long red socks and red shoes
I have weird memories
I have weird memories of you pissing in a sink, I think
I have weird memories of you
I wanna go gator around the warm beds of beginners ?
I'm really worked up

Parking your car, you said "I'm overwhelmed"
You were thinking out loud, you said "I'm overwhelmed"

You said "I think I'm like Tennessee Williams"
I wait for the click, I wait, but it doesn't kick in

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.
American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
Plastic Bag

Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
This is such an excellent song. And I read/hear absolutely no misogyny in it...
The Tennessee William/click lines refer to the play Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. The main character (named Brick) says he has to drink until he feels "the click", and that once he does he feels peaceful.
The chorus of men singing "la la la" in the background of this song is so fine.
Hear, hear.
I saw the National play live in a small setting a couple years ago and someone yelled out for them to play City Middle.
Matt (who had been drinking red wine out of a bottle the entire night) said, "that's a really beautiful song and these guys play it really, really well, but I just can't because... it makes me too fucking sad."
So take that for what you will.
worth noting that don delillo's "white noise", which deals extensively with the idea that the modern matrix of information and sensation overwhelms us, has a chapter in which several academics discuss pissing in sinks as a way of getting in touch with the folklore of america -- and then, two chapters later, tenessee williams is mentioned. i'm certain that the song has nothing to do with the book, but it's entirely possible that berninger was reading it or flipping through it at the time.
I would probably have never read that anywhere else. Thank you, utter imbecile. That is an awesome reference to tell people.
Whoever said Karen is a drug does not know the national very well...Matt Berninger (the lead singer) married to a woman named Carin, and all references to Karen are pretty obviously references to her. Actually anyone who thinks they're making drug references in any song is probably wrong. "Good Mixture" almost certainly means a good mixed drink, the national make constant and obvious allusions to alcohol (in like every other song), and basically never talk about drugs.
Yeah, I've seen a few comments on a lot of songs claiming drug references, but the only song I can think of that has any is "Friend of Mine." There has to be others, but Matt Berninger's just a poet. His descriptions of things are often abstract, some almost stream of consciousness and others surrealist. It's a fair enough assumption by some though since a lot of songwriters just throw in a shit ton of references into their songs and we're kind of surrounded by them day to day.
When he's says "Good Mixture" I think he's talking about being in a good mental state, good brain chemistry.
I like to think it's like a multi-layered metaphor. You can understand the drug aspect, and then you can translate that to how he feels and what he's feeling it about.

In the end, I feel it's just another creative way of saying what he's already said in that verse - "now I'm here, now I have something going, how do I make this moment, this opportunity into something great? Shit, I don't know".
The Click = ideal intoxication.
sorry if someone already noticed this but I was recently reading 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' by Tennessee Williams and this passage struck me:
Big Daddy: What makes you so restless, have you got ants in your britches? Brick: Yes, sir... Big Daddy: Why? Brick: - Something - Hasn't - Happened... Big Daddy: Yeah? What is that? Brick [sadly]: - the click... Big Daddy: Did you say the click? Brick: Yes, click. Big Daddy: What click? Brick: A click that I get in my head that makes me peaceful Big Daddy: I sure in hell don't know what you're talking about, but it disturbs me. Brick: It's just a mechanical thing. Big Daddy: What is a mechanical thing? Brick: This click that I get in my head that makes me peaceful. I got to drink till I get it.
I had always really liked this song but never understood the Tennessee Williams reference which inspired me to have a look at a few of his plays. In the first one I picked up I stumbled across this, so yes in classic National style, there is an ode to the coping powers of a libation. Cheers.
Ps the play is really good too, if you were interested..
Any reference to "Karen" is not a reference to drugs. All references are infact about his (now) wife, "Carin". Look it up. (Nod, "Kittenclaw")
Secondly, the line "I'm on a good mixture" is simply the right amount of alcohol or mixed drinks. Listen to a dozen songs written by Matt and you'll see that this is very clear as noted by "n3il89".
Lastly, the phrase "to gator" simply means to creep slowly and almost hidden, like an "Alligator". Which is infact the name of the album this song is from.
"Good mixture" is a great mixed drink...Berringer makes a similar reference in Fake Empire to putting something in your lemonade
I think it means he has a great buzz from the drink and wants to do awesome.
"go gator around the warm beds of beginners" is referencing sex with less experienced women
very stream-of-consciousness lyrics, I get the picture of someone who just wants to go out and numb themselves on alcohol or whatever and turn their brain off, but for whatever reason it's one of those nights when things just don't happen, 'click', and he ends up thinking about stuff even more than before, but in drunken random snippets like the odd memories. I've never heard of the phrase 'go gator' either so I can't offer anything. I adore the 'la da de da da da' chorus at the end; it's so spooky, and yet has this kind of monotonous feeling (compare to one of their other 'la de da' lines in 'Racing like a Pro') that they convey so well in their songs. Wanting to rise above the mundane, or at least escape it for a while, not succeeding very well. I guess that part is also reminiscent of drunken wordless slurring or just lack of inspiration (not on The National's part! just of the narrator, can't even be bothered to try and string a sentence together any more so just hums along). Meh, I'm rambling. Love the song anyway, very melancholy.
I would assume that 'go gater around the warm beds of begginers' referes to having sex with inexperienced women. Go gater alliterates, it also sounds very close to go getter (or get her). Gater is short for aligator, the Title of the album and I would assume is a good example of an aggressive animal, whos behaviour mimiks the amoral antics of a frustrated male who wants a collection of brief hits (drink, drungs, girls) whilst intentionally or unintentionally destroying all that is innocent
this is about Karen and Jim from The Office
Haha I love you for that :D
