Lyrics for All the Wine as interpreted by countzero

All the Wine Lyrics
I'm put together beautifully
Big wet bottle in my fist, big wet rose in my teeth
I'm perfect piece of ass
Like every Californian
So tall I take over the street, with highbeams shining on my back
A wingspan unbelievable
I'm a festival, I'm a parade

And all the wine is all for me
And all the wine is all for me
And all the wine is all for me

I'm a birthday candle in a circle of black girls
God is on my side
Cuz I'm the child bride
I'm so sorry but the motorcade will have to go around me this time
Cuz God is on my side
And I'm the child bride

And all the wine is all for me
And all the wine is all for me
And all the wine is all for me

I carry the dollhouse, safe on my shoulders
Through the black city, night lights are on in the corners
And everyone's sleeping upstairs
All safe and sound
All safe and sound, I won't the let psychos around
All safe and sound, I won't let the psychos around

I'm in a state, I'm in a state
Nothing can touch us my love
I'm in a state, I'm in a state
Nothing can touch us my love

I know its about him being drunk feeling on top of the world because of it, but im probably wrong cuz a lot of it still doesn't make sense.

No, i think yr right and it makes pretty good sense. The "nonsensical" type stuff is just expression of his feelings of elation

To make some more sense of the "nonsensical" stuff picture this:
You're drunk and stumbling down the middle of the road with a bottle of wine in one hand and a dolls house that you've found/stolen from out side someones house. The "I'm a birthday candle in a circle of black girls" I can only think of being moked by them and thinking it's all great becuase your that perfect piece of ass.

The joys of alchol.

this song reminds me a lot of one of my friends from california.

the line "i'm a perfect piece of ass, like every californian" kinda suggests the attitude that some people have from california. mainly that they're just so much better than everyone else. that's exactly how my buddy from socal acts. the song's basically about pride, imho,

i don't see the song being about pride and only that. it seems to me the wine thing is to be taken literally, no reason it shouldn't. it's still curious you said that about pride - when drunk, you tend to be full of a pride you don't know nothing about while sober. oh, and all this in my self-righteous opinion. i'm right.

He starts off being a happy drunk, of sorts.
By the third verse though "I carry the dollhouse..." We start to see the story unfold. The dollhouse represents the people he loves, perhaps a family. It's a lot of pressure to have to carry a family on your back as the narrator is doing. It is here we realize the pomposity of the first two verses was a result of the narrator drinking away the pressure, the alcohol is his only escape from reality.

Maybe I'm interpreting this wrong, but:
"I'm a birthday candle in a circle of black girls
God is on my side"

What do you do with a birthday candle? You blow it, right?

Uph, I was indeed wrong.

From an interview with the band:
"The birthday candle is this sort of image of a skinny, awkward white guy in the middle of all these beautiful black people and it doesn’t have any more meaning than being self-conscious but also being sort of delusional and a fantasy image – it’s obviously not any kind of literal thing, but it’s a weird way of expressing the feeling of feeling awkward"

'dollhaus' meant 'madhouse' in olden times.

I think everybody that has posted so far has been wrong, I believe this song is strongly oriented around the entitled attitude that religious(specifically christinanity) people typically carry. If you take a look at the album as a whole it touches on religion several times, for example "Mistaken for Strangers" quotes "You wouldn't want an angel watching over you? Surprise Surpise, they wouldn't want to watch." And the lead singer also says "God is on my side" twice in this song. I think the meaning of the songs on this album can only be determined by looking at the album as a whole, and The National's prior work.

i thought the doll house part was about innocence. after all, he won't let the psychos around.

as for the beginning of the song, i wouldn't dare read into any of it too deeply. it seems to be light, somewhat satirical, and vaguely honest. the rose is in his teeth, and all the wine is for him.

I would agree with a lot of what's been written. Nationals lyrics are really amazing and that seems rare these days. I think the meaning has a lot in common with "daddy's gonna pay for your crashed car" by u2 - I picture the song about a young model celebrity in hollywood (take your pick) who arrogantly feels the world revolves around her - I'm the child bride - it's the American pride - living a sheltered life - god is on her side so she can do whatever she wants at everyone else's expense- but in reality, god embraces the humble and lowly, and resists the proud

I like to think this song is indeed about Jesus, at least in subject, maybe not by meaning. I think Matt is sarcastically portraying an adolescent Jesus had he grown up in present times. I think he’s questioning American culture by imagining a selfish prideful Jesus corrupted in His youth by our decaying society. Jesus is thought by Christians to have been perfect, and I believe the first verse is a satirical play on what Americans think is perfect. “Cuz I’m the child bride” it is common christian belief to be the “bride of Christ” referring to an open loving relationship with God’s son. “All the wine is all for me” in the Bible Jesus performs a miracle and turns water to wine, only Matt’s depiction of a selfish adolescent and possibly alcoholic Jesus in America would of course want the gallons of wine for himself (furthermore it was common practice “back then” to serve good wine until the guests were drunk and then serve the cheap stuff when no one would know, but Jesus’ wine was highly regarded as excellent wine by the wedding coordinator/chef, just another reason a selfish person would want it all for themselves.) The repetition of black “I’m a birthday candle in a circle of black girls/through the black city” leads me to believe he wasn’t referring to skin color but perhaps sin. “I carry the dollhouse, safe on my shoulders” Jesus carried a cross on his back or shoulders only there was nothing safe about it. I think Matt’s selfish Jesus is bearing the innocence American teens give away rather than sin and sneaking it out of the black city while everyone is unaware it’s even gone.

I think it might be about being a narcissist and going on a date bottle of wine in his hand and a rose in his teeth and he thinks he's so good looking

The narcissist is just a little too obvious for me. I feel like there is a deeper meaning to this song rather than this guy thinking he is awesome.
ok suggestion: The guy is depressed because nothing is going right in his life. The songs portrays how he would like to see himself. This is him trying to make his life seem like it is worth something. I dont think it is about young Jesus getting drunk.

Reminds me a lot of a character named Hubert in the book Beatles by the Norwegian writer Lars Saabye Christensen.
