This is about bronies. They communicate by stomping.
Karen, I'm not taking sides
I don't think I'll ever do that again
I'll end up winning and I won't know why
I'm really trying to shine here, I'm really trying
You're changing clothes and closing windows on me all the time
Well, whatever you do, listen, you better wait for me
No, I wouldn't go out alone into America
Whatever you do, listen, you better wait for me
No, I wouldn't go out alone
Karen, we should call your father, maybe it's just a phase
He'll know the trick to get a wayward soul to change his ways
It's a common fetish for a doting man
To ballerina on the coffee table cock in hand
Well, whatever you do, listen, you better wait for me
No, I wouldn't go out alone into America
Whatever you do, listen, you better wait for me
No, I wouldn't go out alone
Without warm water in my head
All I see is black and white and red
I feel mechanical and thin
Hear me play my violin again
I'm living in the target's shoes
All I see is black and white and blue
Idle, idle, idle, idle, protect the nest
Protect the title
Karen, put me in a chair, fuck me and make me a drink
I've lost direction, and I'm past my peak
I'm telling you this isn't me
No, this isn't me
Karen, believe me, you just haven't seen my good side yet
Well, whatever you do, listen, you better wait for me
No, I wouldn't go out alone into America
Whatever you do, listen, you better wait for me
No, I wouldn't go out alone
Without warm water in my head
All I see is black and white and red
I feel mechanical and thin
Hear me play my violin again
I'm living in the target's shoes
All I see is black and white and blue
Idle, idle, idle, idle, protect the nest
Protect the title
I must be me, I'm in my head
Black birds are circling my bed
I must be me, I must be me
Black feathers are falling on my feet
Idle, idle, idle, idle, protect the nest
Protect the title
Idle, idle, idle, idle, protect the nest
Protect the title

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
"It's a common fetish for a doting man to ballerina on the coffee table cock in hand"
The first few times I listened to this album these lines passed me by, then when I listened a bit closer I was like...did I just hear that! haha...I love the national for those moments, they have the whole package, music, atmosphere, emotion, crazy lyrical flourishes, great characters...
can't wrap my head around this verse though!
Karen is loosly based on Matt's girlfriend, Corrine. He just changed the name. She actually has a lot to do with the music that they write. Check it out.

Uhh, sorry to correct you, but his *wife is named Carin..
Oh, I apologize, I just read the interview... Wow, I never knew that. I guess he met Carin later then...? Coincidentally, with nearly the same name...?
Beautiful song... The National is one of my favorite bands.
ahh... me too. But i wish i knew who this Karen character was.
i WISH i WAS that Karen Character, so that i could have the members of The National perform a private concert for me.
well it's currently the lead singers girlfriend. :)
pretty remarkable stuff - looks like The National may soon be big - they deserve it, a great song
i adore this song. it reminds me of my boy. i listened to it like 5 times this morning while i was driving.
This song feels like instability.
You can tell that the lead singer is pleading for his lover's company, while trying to deny the draw toward the outrageous. There's a pull back and forth; he can play the rock star, have his liaisons and act like a drunken oaf, but he's also actively denying his child-like behaviour and looking for ways to change it in order to grow into a suitable partner.
Part of him kind of feels like all of his whining and lamenting over the subject is pointless; the third verse is sort of a giving up on the issue, where he's sick of arguing over who and what he is and just wants to numb his mind of it all.
I'd say the final portion is significant, where he's full on accepting the fact that this is who he is, a rambunctious alcoholic who's depressed and tired of following the picket fence agenda.
"Idle...protect the nest, protect the title." He isn't going anywhere by pretending to be a family man, but he cares about his lover and sees that his actions hurt her.
I think a lot of us want something more out of the fairytales we've been fed, and this song is a perfect representation of that feeling.
"I must be me, I'm in my head"
I think this part of the monologue completely encapsulates a moment of self realization.
