The more that we take
The paler we get
I can't remember what it is
We tried to forget

The towel on the floor
So cold it can sting
In your eyes is a place
Worth remembering

Do you wake up and taste this
And smash it apart
I've gone all this fucking way
To wind up back at the start

Hey the closer we think we are
Well it only got us so far
Have you got anything left to show
No no I didn't think so

Hey the sooner we realize
We cover ourselves with lies
Well Underneath we're not so tough
Oh love is not enough

Well it hides in the dark
Like the weaker and vain
We didn't give it a mouth
So it cannot complain

We never really had a chance
We never really make it through
And to think I believed
I believed I could get better with you

Hey the closer we think we are
Well it only got us so far
Have you got anything left to show
No no I didn't think so

Hey the sooner we realize
We cover ourselves with lies
Well Underneath we're not so tough
Oh love is not enough

General Comment:GOOD song. Good band, too. The lyrics are already well-interpreted. Sometimes it matters not what you do for the other person is incapable of ever allowing him/herself to experience true love...

General Comment:This is the second stage of thoughts for a harsh break-up, the first being All the Love in the World. You feel betrayed, as the person you gave everything left you for a reason you cannot see or understand. You wanted to try and go further with them, but they were the first to recognize whatever went wrong and cut it off, and now you are left trudging. "Love is Not Enough" refers to the newfound belief that even if you are in love, its not enough to sustain a relationship. Its a loss of faith.

General Comment:This song depresses me because it seems to be a rejection of "Closer".
"The CLOSER we think we are
Well, it only got us so far"
"I've gone all this fucking way
To wind up back at, back at the start"
He seems to be saying that it was naive to believe that this woman could save him and heal him and that now they broke up and he's back at square one.

General Comment:Until I was put in the same situation I just thought this song was about drugs, or the whole idea of love not being enough to make you happy. Or more drugs.

IMHO this is about him and his girlfriend, both of which are in love and love one another BUT things like fighting or whatever emotional issues get in the way and are too much for them to stay together.

Love is not enough for them to stay together. You can both love each other, but sometimes it is not enough to stay in a relationship, especially if one person wants something the other doesn't (The most common example, marriage and kids).

You can both tell yourselves lies to keep the relationship going, but sooner or later the fights come out again and it just won't last. Read the lyrics again and it all applies.

General Comment:You are both right. It's about a relationship with a person while you are trying to get off drugs, and they continue to make things harder (cuz they probably use drugs themselves) and it makes them start using again.

"For you to go and take this
    And smash it apart
I've gone all this fucking way
To wind up back at, back at the start..."

"Well, it hides in the dark,
    Like a withering vein,
We didn't give it a mouth
    So it cannot complain"

Those lyrics are a reference to a vien dying to have some herion shot into it.

"We never really had a chance
We never really make it through
And now to think I believed
I believed I could get better with you"

Another lyric that makes perfect sense when looked at with that view.

General Comment:wow, that comment really got butchered... I guess no <br> html for me.... here's the non butchered version:

vecter1212, I'm not saying I disagree with you fully, but you're missing the point of the song. The whole With Teeth album is about relationships. Some songs are obviously about drugs (if you know a bit of background on Trent, you'd know that the song "With Teeth" is about his former drug addiction)-- But even still, there's a few songs that are definantly about people, or a representation of people; ie. "Only" and this song. For me, this song, "All The Love In The World" and "getting smaller" have significant meanings to me. Imagine getting stepped on by someone you trust and having your world flipped upside down from it. Now imagine them a half year later appearing to try and make things right with empty soultions-- solutions they don't intend on going through with fully; aka, all talk and nothing to show for it. Now reread the lyrics. Let me highlight a few key parts:

For you to go and take this
    And smash it apart
I've gone all this fucking way
To wind up back at, back at the start...

HEY! The closer we think we are
Well, it only got us so far
Now you got anything left to show?
No, no, I didn't think so...

    HEY! The sooner we realize
    We cover ourselves with lies
But underneath we're not so tough
    And love is not enough

    ...

We never really had a chance
We never really make it through
And now to think I believed
I believed I could get better with you
