Once upon a time at the foot of a great mountain,
There was a town where the people known as Happyfolk lived.
Their very existence a mystery to the rest of the world.
Obscured, as it was, by great clouds.
Here they played out their peaceful lives,
Innocent of the litany of excessive violence that was growing in the world below.
To live in harmony with the spirit of the mountain called Monkey was enough.
Then one day, Strangefolk arrived in the town.
They came in camouflage, hidden behind dark glasses, but no one noticed them.
They only saw shadows. you see, without the truth to the eyes
The happy folk were blind

Falling out of airplanes and hiding out in holes.
Waiting for the sunset to come, people going home.
Jump out from behind them and shoot them in the head.
Now everybody dancing, the dance of the dead,
The dance of the dead. the dance of the dead

In time, the Strangefolk found their way into the higher reaches of the mountain,
And it was there that they found the caves of Unimaginable Sincerity and Beauty.
By chance, they stumbled upon The Place Where All Good Souls Come to Rest.
The Strangefolk, they coveted the jewels in these caves above all things,
And soon they began to mine the mountain,
It's rich seam fuelling the chaos of their own world.

Meanwhile, down in the town, the Happyfolk slept restlessly.
Their dreams invaded by shadowy figures digging away at their souls.
Every day, people would wake and stare at the mountain.
Why was it bringing darkness into their lives?

And as the strange folk mined deeper and deeper into the mountain,
Holes began to appear,
Bringing with them a cold and bitter wind that chilled the very soul of the Monkey.
For the first time, the Happyfolk felt fearful,
For they knew that soon the monkey would stir from it's deep sleep.
Then there came a sound, distant first, that grew into castrophany so immense,
That it could be heard far away in space.
There were no screams, there was no time.
The mountain called monkey had spoken.
There was only fire, and then,
Nothing

Oh little town in USA, the time has come to see
There's nothing you believe you want
But where were you when it all came down on me?
Did you call me out?

My Interpretation:the strangefolk are what has become the majority of humanity, twisted and darkened by their world of the "litany of excess and violence". the story is about the corruption of what may possibly be the last pure-hearted society left, who have become one with nature but lost their sight in the process.
the happyfolk are an innocent and kind society, cut off from the world in their town covered by clouds. but eventually, the strangefolk discover this paradise and the treasure that lay in it.the happyfolk's souls, being attached to the mountain, took physical roots in the gems, but the strangefolk, caring nothing for the happyfolk, began to mine these from the mountain- carving tunnels and holes into it. the happyfolk began to feel the pain of their souls being ripped apart, their connection to the spirits laying in the mountain causing them pain- they grew fearful- they sensed something was very wrong- they knew the mountain would at last show it's wrath. finally, nature retaliates and destroys both good and evil alike.

General Comment:This somewhat reminds me of how immigrants come to a place and start to change it with their culture in a negative way. Like bringing sexual and race discrimination, and how tension is growing between the native people of the land (or country) and how in the end if it doesn't stop, people will start to really fight it out between them.

General Comment:Actually, the very last line is supposed to be "Did you call me? No".

I really adore the song though, very good use of imagery and metaphors, and the made-up word 'castrophony'. I do think it has to do with modern society, and how mankind brings about its own downfall. RTBRAND1 has this down really well.

General Comment:I dont want to sound like a hippie or a tree hugger but I think that it is commenting on how when people find new places they feel the need to "civilize" it and rape the earth of it's resources and corrupt the innocent people.

General Comment:Anyone think this song could possibly refer to the Gorillaz and their arrival in the music industry? If you think about the Happyfolk as being regular people (happy with the music they listen to), the Monkey as the industry itself (stable), and the Strangefolk as the Gorillaz, who arrive and shake the entire music scene with their weirdness.

General Comment:This song is about a small community in Hawaii, whose village was overshadowed by a volcano that was thought to be dormant, which the townspeople called monkey, which they respected greatly. The townspeople were very primitive, they had no communication equipment etc...

Anyway, a mining company decided to mine the area, but knew that if the townspeople knew about this, they would be upset. So, they started mining without the townspeople's knowledge. The people could hear loud noises (machinery) coming from 'Monkey'. They feared it would erupt.

They were right to have these fears. Whether it was a natural eruption or if it was caused by the miners, the volcano erupted, wiping out the mining crew and the entire village.

When you look at this story and the lyrics, the meaning of this song is actually quite simplistic. It is simply telling a true story about the mountain 'Monkey'.
