I'm comin' over
See me down at the station
By the lane
With my hands in my pocket
Jingling a wish coin
That I stole from a fountain
That was drowning all the cares in the world
When I get older
Climbin' up on the back porch fence
Just to see the dogs runnin'
With a ring and a question
And my shiverin' voice is singing
Through a crack in the window

I better go it alone

Down on the corner
See me standin'
On a makeshift road
With the dust storm blowin'
In a long black shadow
Pull a hammer from a coal mine
Down where your daddy was workin'
Comb my hair back
Strike a match on a bathroom wall
Where my number was written
Drivin' on the sidewalk
Lookin' back and the sky is burning
In my rear view mirror

I better go it alone

General Comment:It's a good song by a good artist. I think it's about a man who doesn't feel as though he has a choice, so after thinking his situation through he decides it best that he go it alone. Obviously a song about lonliness and defeat, but perhaps hope that out there somewhere he'll begin to feel better about himself.

To me, it sounds like this song is about a boy who is in love with a girl that lives next door, or "over the fence". He is saving up money to buy a ring to ask her to marry him by taking coins from the wishing fountain, which he finds futile ("that was drowning all the cares in the world"). The dogs on the other side of the fence are a symbol for the accessibility of his desire. At first he climbs the fence "just to see the dogs running", but he is "shivering" and too uncertain to go through with it, so he decides to "go it alone". "when [he] get[s] older" the dogs are "standing firm". He's finally worked up the courage, but when he sees he his dream is no longer accessible, he again goes it alone. The story progresses over the years, as he is saving money from the well, and working at her "daddy's coal mine". He is trying to gain the money for the ring and respect from her dad to propose. But alas, he "goes it alone".

General Comment:I love that Jack White co-wrote this song. But I think it's about independence and one person can manage themselves without people. It's a big "F' you," if I say so myself.
