Lyrics for Intervention as interpreted by newkicks

Intervention Lyrics
The king's taken back the throne,
The useless seed is sown,
When they say they're cutting off the phone,
I tell them you're not home.

No place to hide,
You were fighting as a soldier on their side,
You're still a soldier in your mind,
Though nothing's on the line.

You say it's money that we need,
As if we were only mouths to feed,
I know no matter what you say
There are some debts you'll never pay.

Working for the church
While your family dies.
You take what they give you
And you keep it inside.
Every spark of friendship and love
Will die without a home.

Hear the solider groan, "We'll go at it alone"

I can taste the fear.
Lift me up and take me out of here,
Don't want to fight, don't want to die,
Just want to hear you cry.

Who's going to throw the very first stone?
Oh! Who's going to reset the bone?
Walking with your head in a sling
Want to hear the soldier sing.

Working for the Church
While my family dies,
Your little baby sister's
Going to lose her mind,
Every spark of friendship and love
Will die without a home

Hear the soldier groan, "We'll go at it alone"

I can taste your fear,
It's going to lift you up and take you out of here,
And the bone shall never heal,
I care not if you kneel.

We can't find you now,
But they're going to get their money back somehow,
And when you finally disappear
We'll just say you were never here.

Been working for the church
While your life falls apart,
Singing hallelujah with the fear in your heart,
Every spark of friendship and love
Will die without a home.

Hear the soldier groan, "We'll go at it alone"
Hear the soldier groan, "We'll go at it alone"

I think it is about the singer having a mental intervention with a friend (soldier) or possibly himself.
I love the line "Working for the church while your family dies." Such an amazing contrast in one line. I think the use of the word church doesn't necessarily mean a church in the literal sense. I think it can any institution really.
Every spark of friendship and love will die without a home. I think it means that love and friendship in the civilian sense maybe go out the window in time of war.

When they say there cutting off the phone, I'll tell them your not home. (Not sure on that one)
We can't find you now,
But they're going to get their money back somehow,
And when you finally disappear
We'll just say you were never here. (Not sure on that one either....any thoughts?)

i think its about Christians who are only a Christian out of fear of death etc. They keep their faith to themselves and do not share the love with others. This song has a lot of Christian imagery.

"The king's taken back the throne,
The useless seed is sown"

the king would be Jesus/God taking His place back in someone's life. maybe a person becoming Christian again? and the seed of faith that is sown (also a biblical reference) is useless because this person will keep it to their self.

"You're still a soldier in your mind,
Though nothing's on the line."

many Christians refer to themselves as "soldiers of Christ" and believe that they fight a spiritual war. But to the non-believer there is "nothing on the line", i.e. no spiritual war.

"You say it's money that we need,
As if we were only mouths to feed,
I know no matter what you say
There are some debts you'll never pay."

this person is in belief that money will solve all the worlds spiritual problems, but this person has past debts too. this could mean actual debts and maybe he has done some wrong things

"Working for the church
While your family dies.
You take what they give you
And you keep it inside.
Every spark of friendship and love
Will die without a home."

this person does not reflect the love that the Church encourages, and keeps their faith separate from their family. Every spark of friendship created in this person by their faith will die before it gets passed on.

"I can taste the fear.
Lift me up and take me out of here,
Don't want to fight, don't want to die,
Just want to hear you cry."

this person who has become a Christian may have a troubled past with the "narrator". the narrator does not want to fight with this person or discuss religion, but just wants to see real emotion, and can sense a lot of fear in this person.

"Who's going to throw the very first stone?
Oh! Who's going to reset the bone?
Walking with your head in a sling
Want to hear the soldier sing."

waiting to see who will open the discussion first (another biblical reference). the broken bone is the troubled past that needs reconciliation. the narrator wants to hear this stoic "soldier" speak honestly and confide.

"We can't find you now,
But they're going to get their money back somehow,
And when you finally disappear
We'll just say you were never here."

this person is obviously in debt and is being sought after. (like his phone service getting cut off earlier) this person leaves the narrator without any communication.

"Been working for the church
While your life falls apart,
Singing hallelujah with the fear in your heart,"

this is a very haunting verse. someone who is religious for the wrong reasons and just simply follows the rules. this person is just ignoring all his problems in his life, even ignoring his family while he hides under the false security of religion.

this doesnt seem 100% consistent to me, but it was the first strong interpretation that came to mind

Working for the Church
While my family dies,
Your little baby sister's
Going to lose her mind,
Every spark of friendship and love
Will die without a home

Hear the soldier groan, "We'll go at it alone"

This is a very haunting lyric for me.... I am about to join the ARMY as a Combat medic. I have a younger 13 yr old sister who is about to turn 14. She is one of the great loves of my life. I would do anything for her, and I love spending time with her, just as she loves hanging out with her big brother. I am joining the ARMY, this will sound fucked up and twisted, to see the grittiest and most fucked up things in life. I think you can't get anymore fucked up than in the middle of a war. I know I sound crazy, and it is crazy, who would willingly throw themselves into a combat situation? I guess I would. I have received torrents of disapproval from all of my friends about this plan and I understand why, but it hasn't fazed me at all. Anyways... the lyric 'working for the church as your family dies'.... to me that symbolizes the relation between the military and the church( the christian church). I come from a broken, fucked up, normal american household. An oblivious father, a drunkard mom, three siblings, my parents divorced a few years back, its been like walking on egg shells ever since. So here I go, joining the military, as my family is falling apart. "Your little baby sister's Going to lose her mind" I worry that in my absence, my little sister will become very sad, confused, or.... i don't know, but i don't trust my parents to raise her all that well. For years, I have been the one she comes and leans on, the person she cries to, the one she can trust to not act like a jackass. Then there is the end of the quote "every spark of friendship and love will die without a home." Well ive already lost a girlfriend due to me enlisting.... i don't think it would have lasted anyway, but still. I feel like if i go, i will be excommunicated from all of my friends.... they are the usual anti-war lot though. hippies, stoners, indie kids, hardcore kids, etc... they all live in a drug fueled party environment, and I personally cant do it anymore. I don't like wasting time or my youth. But it would still cut deep to be shunned by all of them. I don't want to come back from a war with no friends to talk with and hang out with.

"Hear the soldier groan, "We'll go at it alone"- thats me i guess. Ill just do this by myself... I will do everything I can for my little sister, but I gotta start making moves in my own life... I've wasted too much time, too much life, too much youth.

"I think this song is about religion. It's about being a soldier in the army of the Lord. God asks everything from you. It's about turning to atheism.

Hear the soldier groan, we'll go it all alone.

We'll go without God. They say that hell is the absence of God. I've heard people argue about the need for God because it's a lonely world without him. "

He's hit the nail on teh head, how do people really come to these ideas that its a bush protestant song, or that theyre speaking about themselves as kings back on top? This song is based on religion. The Album is titled "neon bible' for christs sake. If you listen to each song, it describes his loss of god and faith, becoming atheist. It is his absolute loathe for religion and all that it has done to him, and his family.

its about living in a religious household, struggling a famiy that neglects its children for faith. This whole album I think is of his transition to letting go of religion. Take it from a homeless bum, its not about bush.

I think it's partly about a dead beat dad who gets a job working for the Church. He's in a lot of debt and can't pay the bills (When they say they're cutting off the phone, pretend you're not home, we can't find you now, but they're gonna get their money back somehow.) so he takes a paltry job for the Church and keeps the pithy paycheck for himself. Eventually the guilt is too much and he runs off, possibly leaving the family without any money at all.
The stuff about soldiers implies that this dad is possibly a war vet who can't get a normal job (or was denied health coverage and spent all his money on medical bills. That's happened to a number of Irag vets.)
It seems the Church cares very little for this man's situation and is pushing religion as the solution to all his problems.
But I don't know,t hat doesn't quite cover everything in this song.

A great deal of the songs on Neon Bible, including Intervention are, to me, about the rise of fascism in north america. 'The King's taking back the throne' and all the talk of money and debts. Sounds like America late in the first decade of the 2000s to me. This seems to be a reoccurring theme of the album, especially on songs like Windowsill. He actually says 'Why did I take the pill?' like Neo's Red Pill. Learning the truth. And now you live in fear of a totalitarian government. Man I sound paranoid. But if you listen to the album, all the elements are there. World War III, when are you coming for me? Yeah, I'm not paranoid.

Amazing song though. I could march into battle fearless if I had Intervention blast on quality headphones.

I personally feel this song is about the corruption of churches/modern religion and how greedy/selfish some of them can be. I honestly can't see it as being about anything other than religion

I think its about a poor man devoting his life to his church and basically being so strict with his family and not giving them attention (possibly even leaving them completely)that it causes the family to hate each other. I think the "soldier" stands for being in gods army.

Obviously this song can mean whatever you want it to. But to those claiming it's not a political statement--Win has introduced it in concerts (as was said on the previous page) as being "about a former Texas governor." They even campaigned for Obama--I don't see what the fear is about bands being politically relevant.

"King's taken back the throne" is not exactly a subtle metaphor considering this was recorded after such a controversial, hateful election in 2004, and considering how authoritarian Bush is.

The lines about the soldier in the second verse suggest to me that it might be about a soldier who has returned from the war with PTSD. Like "Antichrist Television Blues," it continues the theme of men abandoning or destroying their families to serve a "greater cause" when they are really serving themselves. But it's really beautiful, because Win isn't even accusing them--he's accusing the system.

It's about people blinding themselves with religion [head in a sling] trying to make themselves conform to whatever the church says [what I know is what you say is right] and ignoring common sense, ignoring the present, abandoning your friends for a "higher calling" but looking in organized religion instead of the real thing.

NO, I dont see any political statement here.
However, I vividly see some teenage boy that is forced to be the man of the house after his mother died and the father had quit his job to work for the church.
I think it's more of a religious statement than a political one. I know people who have become consumed by their church. Everything becomes meaningless to them. It's sad. This seems to be about that to me.
The Arcade Fire is one of the best bands ever. Every song could be dissected and found a work of art. Hard to say that about some (Brittany Spears, anyone?)

This song is about drug addiction and the battle to get clean.

"When they say they're cutting off the phone,
I tell them you're not home." eventually addicts will have to face struggles such as unpaid bills.

"No place to hide,
You were fighting as a soldier on their side,
You're still a soldier in your mind,
Though nothing's on the line."
theres no where to go but down. You are a soldier in your own mind fighting to keep up the addiction. there is nothing on the line because you can not get any lower

"You say it's money that we need,
As if we were only mouths to feed,"

struggling for money to further feed the addiction, forgetting about their family and any other responsibilities

"I know no matter what you say
There are some debts you'll never pay." the money borrowed from loved ones to pay for drugs is a debt that can never truly be paid back

"You take what they give you
And you keep it inside."
you take money from loved ones but do not get help. you keep the addcition close to you.
"Every spark of friendship and love
Will die without a home."
you lose everyone that ever meant anything to you because they can not tolerate the pain any longer

"Hear the solider groan, "We'll go at it alone" "
The voice inside will continue this cycle alone to keep up with the addciton, pushing away all family and friends, the drugs are more important.

"Walking with your head in a sling"
your body is there but your mind is burried deep somewhere else, the drugs overpower you

"Working for the Church
While my family dies,
Your little baby sister's
Going to lose her mind"

The church is the cycle you are going through of getting money and paying for drugs in your mind this is normal, but on the outside your family and your sister are dying over this.

"I can taste your fear,
It's going to lift you up and take you out of here,
And the bone shall never heal,
I care not if you kneel."

The fear is the only thing that will break this. The fear will keep you away, but you will never be the same, you can kneel and beg, but the fear is the only thing that will keep you away from this life.

"We can't find you now,
But they're going to get their money back somehow,
And when you finally disappear
We'll just say you were never here."

no one will want to remember you when you are gone. the money they gave you isnt the problem anyomore. you have completely lost yourself, and the memories of you are too painful, its easier to pretend you were never there.

"Been working for the church
While your life falls apart,
Singing hallelujah with the fear in your heart,
Every spark of friendship and love
Will die without a home."

Your life is falling apart while you continue to get deeper into this cycle of drugs. You sing but every step you take you are in fear. all of your close friendships and loves have died

can i just say after hearing this song for the first time a few days ago, i cannot stop listening? it truly is amazing -- from the church organ to the lyrics in general, it's a structured song that does have a meaning, and can be different depending on the listen and their current situation.

personally i think it's about life in general and how everyone needs to have an intervention -- a religious one. when things turn bad everyone turns to religion as an answer, and i think that's what this song is mostly about:

"Singing hallelujah with the fear in your heart"

people are afraid to admit that they have a love for God because of what others think. especially when something does go wrong in one's life, they go to the church secretly so no one knows.

the song can have a bunch of meanings -- political, religious, etc. it makes no difference.

hey! Iīm not american or even english and i think iīll not understand every hidden hints in this song but as i heard it the first time, i`d really not the impression that it`s a pro-church song. the words that really stay in mind are for me "working for the church while your family dies, -or -your liv(f)e falls apart(donīt know which lif(v)e ist right at this point). I think that arcade fire isnīt very close to the church, but i#m sure it doesnīt care because the great thing at this song is that it let's place for a personal interpretation for everyone- for me it's as i just said, more against church(also for my friends) and could also be against bush, but perhaps just because bush isn't very popular here and we are all not very close to church. my conclusion is that it could be about fanatism in something (church can be only an example, because of the actual situation- i haven't seen it by myself but i think religioes fanatism is in f.e america a bigger problem than here), and could have the massage to stay on the ground and life for now and care about what happens on earth and not losing you in any overnatural thing by letting your live flow beneath you.

i hope its not to stupid for you what i wrote and my englsih is not so bad that you cannot follow me

to me, this song is about loving your neighbor. we in america sometimes try to isolate ourselves from our brothers and sisters who are suffering (i.e. darfur, iraq) and we try to justify ourselves by giving time and/or money to the physical church. however to show the love of God, the church needs to wake up and BE the body of christ. its our job to take care of them. there was a saint who would give bread to the homeless, and would apologize for stealing it ( even though he didnt directly). ANYWAYS, were trying to feel good by giving to thechurch when those around us are suffering. (working for the church while my family dies). its a call for followers of Christ to wake up and DO SOMETHING!

I'm pretty sure it's about how shit the world is, people are less humane, governments are more corrupt, and there is still a lack of revolutionary thought. "Workin' for the church while your family dies" means living in a society that's killing you. "Who's gonna throw the very first stone" is asking who's gonna start the change or start the revolution. All the lyrics make alot more sense when you look at it that way.

I have a story in my mind with this song: The narrator is the middle member of a family. His family is going through rough times, and his eldest brother is a religious fanatic. He is supposed to be supporting the family, but instead he is out fighting for the Holy Church. His family is starving and his life is falling apart, but the brother only turns to his church. The narrator is scolding his brother for neglecting his family in these times and condemning him.

To everyone who says this isn't an anti-Bush song, Win would disagree. I was at their show on Oct. 6 on Randall's Island in New York City, and as Win led into the song he said "This is for the former governor of Texas who--oh f*** it." It sounded like he was about to go on an anti-Bush rant and then decided to just belt out the song.
