Lyrics for Talk as interpreted by delial

Talk Lyrics
oh, brother I can’t get through
I’ve been trying hard to meet you
‘cause I don’t know what to do
oh, brother I can’t believe it’s true
I’m so scared about the future
and I want to talk to you
oh, I want to talk to you

you can take a picture of something you see
in the future, where will I be?
you can climb a ladder up to the sun
or a write a song nobody has sung
or do something that’s never been done

are you lost or incomplete?
do you feel like a puzzle?
you can’t find your missing piece?
tell me, how do you feel?
well, I feel like they’re talking in a language I don’t speak
and they’re talking it to me

so you take a picture of something you see
in the future, where will I be?
you can climb a ladder up to the sun
or a write a song nobody has sung
or do something that’s never been done
do something that’s never been done

so you don’t know where you’re going
and you want to talk?
and you feel like you’re going where you’ve been before?
you tell anyone who’ll listen, but you feel ignored?
nothing’s really making any sense at all?

let’s talk
let’s talk
let’s talk
let’s talk

This is a great song. And I think it's about adolescence and being awkward and unsure of yourself. And that's the time in your life when people often feel the most lost, as everyone's saying it's referring to.

I've waited a very long time to comment on this song b/c I've never wanted to talk about why I can personally relate to the song. For some reason, after reading these posts, I thought by posting my ideas, it might just help someone else in my same situation.

A few months after this song was released my brother committed suicide after a long battle with depression. The night he took his life, he called me to "talk" about all the problems he was having. I never knew he was that sad and out of touch w/ his life. He was an incredible man with a huge heart but was stricken with a horrific psychiatric disorder. When I first heard this song, I immediately stopped and broke down but over time I found peace in the words and it now reminds me of what a great guy he was. I listen to it when I work out and every time I hear it I run or bike a little bit faster in memory of him.

Robert used to call me whenever he was having a really bad day and I would try to help him work through his immediate problem(s). I still think he talks to me, just in a very different way. Anyone out there who has a friend or family memeber who is suffering at all, please don't wait to open your arms to them and actively help them!

In general, this song reminds me that eveyone needs someone to "talk" to and that if you have someone that needs you, don't hesitate to reach out to them!

In loving memory of my big brother RGK!!! I love you!

When I listen to this song I always think of my older brother...I can relate to this song when life seems a mess and you just don't know what to do. I look up to my brother as someone I want to be more like. So I feel like if I really need someone to talk to about life, my brother is a place I would go. Just thought I would share that about this song...wonderful song great lyrics! Yeah Chris!

I found it kind of ironic when he says "Or write a song nobody has sung", since this isn't really their song. :P

I know they got permission to copy it, but still.

when i listen to this song..it just kind of creeps me out a little, I don't know why. even the video seems a little eerie to me. maybe it's just me? but anyways it sounds like he's like talking to himself? like maybe he's trying to make everything in his life make sense, and he's trying to tell that to himself. he's confused about his future and everyone he tries to talk to isn't really listening or makes no sense. so he's just trying to tell himself to talk it over with himself and try to do something with his life and to stop worrying. lol that's just how i kind of take it.......

Just to take a stab at this... If Coldplay is a religious band at all or a "Christian" band, the song may be considered in this following way... Although these lyrics are pretty vague and are open to a wide range of interpretation, I think I can come up with some reasonable explanations that may be possibilities...

are you lost or incomplete?
do you feel like a puzzle?
you can’t find your missing piece?
tell me, how do you feel?
well, I feel like they’re talking in a language I don’t speak
and they’re talking it to me

These phrases are very common when concerning religion. Non-believers are considered to be imcomplete. This is because they have a "incomplete, or missing piece of a puzzle" that can and only can be fixed by our Savior, Christ. Now for the latter part. When he talks about "theyre talking in a language i dont speak and theyre talking it to me", i think this is the opposite party, who does not understand the language because they are not christians. For those of you who believe predestination, you can see why this can make sense. I dont really want to get into all the religious stuff so i will try to simplify this. Ok. so, there is sin and people do not seek good and only by a certain rightousness through God, we can be aware of our sin and control it somewhat. God is believed to reveal himself to certain people, so when others try to share their faith with non believers, they do not understand. The person communicating their faith seems uncomprehensive somewhat because they do not have God in their life.

so you don’t know where you’re going
and you want to talk?
and you feel like you’re going where you’ve been before?
you tell anyone who’ll listen, but you feel ignored?
nothing’s really making any sense at all?

let’s talk
let’s talk
let’s talk
let’s talk

This song personaly means a lot to me. It's my older brother's and mine's song, cause we're extremely close and can talk to eachother about anything.
And I don't see him a lot because he's in the Navy, but when I do see him it just feels like everyone in our family wants him to fix their problems, frankly, because he's probably the only one in our family who's not off whack.
I don't expect him to fix my problems, and he doesn't expect me to fix his, so that's why this is our song because we HELP eachother fix our problems.

I love this song... It says what I think:
I'm so scared about the future and I want to talk to you.
well, I feel like they’re talking in a language I don’t speak
you tell anyone who’ll listen, but you feel ignored?
nothing’s really making any sense at all?

It's one of the best Coldplay' songs.

Just say: Let's talk, let's talk.

from my own personal experiences i took this song quite literally.
i thought it was about loosing contact with a close relative, such as brother as it says in the song and then not seeing all the things you should of seen in there life from then on.

i think the title of the song is talk
because there is this break down in communication that can easily be found again by just talking again

and then theres other people around you confusin the situation and gettin in the way of you and your relationship

i dno it just reminds me of a lot of things i can see where everyone else is cmin with this tho

He must have an autistic brother. Come on people stop being so selfish and try to put yourself in other peoples shoes sometimes. Fuck how the song means to you...if the artist is good and intelligent...and listen to their fucking story, if you think they earned it. Fuck coldplay anyway, GAYASS CHICK BAND.

Well, Did you put your funky lil 3D glasses on and look???????? Why would someone write two different lyric versions? I loved all the comments out there but guess what? My turn. There are 3 Parts to this: Part 1 was the first question I asked. Part 2 Was the second question I asked........I know what your thinking....Part 3 is???????????????????? Go back watch the video and it will come to you. It's not always what you think when you first look at any situation in life...go get your answer. Its there. (hiding)

I simply thought it was the relationship problems, where the couple doesn't communicate very well, and finally they decide to talk things out.

ps the video is odd but good

in the response version right before the singing starts if you listen hard enough you can hear a cough or a sneeze or something.

I posted it in the other one just because I thought it was so cool :)

This an amazing song. I first heard the song 2 years ago before i went to Uni, i was scared and the song was easily identifiable with, unfortunately things havent gone well and the song is as powerful as ever. IMO it stands for someone who is lost, confused, neglected, with uneasy thoughts into the future.

I love this song. It seems to describe a major life transition, when you go off on your own, or you go somewhere new, you just don't know, and you really want to talk to someone. Its good. Its really good.

Uncertainty -
‘cause I don’t know what to do
oh, brother I can’t believe it’s true
I’m so scared about the future
and I want to talk to you

His fiance is pregnant (look at the timeframe the song was written - recorded around the time they eloped)
"in the future, where will I be?
you can climb a ladder up to the sun
or a write a song nobody has sung
or do something that’s never been done"

That's all stuff he could've done, but now feels smothered because his future seems closed.

Then he realizes all that stuff will not make him whole like a wife and child.
"are you lost or incomplete?
do you feel like a puzzle?
you can’t find your missing piece?"

So he changes the meaning of the refrain to either the possibilities of his child or realizing from his brother that he can still do all this stuff with a wife and kids.

"in the future, where will I be?
you can climb a ladder up to the sun
or a write a song nobody has sung
or do something that’s never been done
do something that’s never been done"

The I - You part of the refrain adds the ambiguity of whether he's talking about himself or his child.

Dude he's calling his brother because his girlfriend is pregnant and she's talking about getting married. He's uncertain about having a kid and about being married, but he changes his mind after talking to his brother.

He changes his mind when he realizes the potential future of his unborn child. He's singing about Gweneth Paltrow and Apple.

I love this song. Wow, the first and second versions are so different. It speaks to me in lostness and confusion. But I think the missing piece in many people's puzzle is actually God - not knowing Him, or why they're here. And I think meeting him is a better solution than taking a picture, climbing a (very very high) ladder or writing a song. These things might be helpful to express yourself, but I find reading the bible and talking to God is the ultimate answer - better than some brother I can't get through to!

To me. . . this song has quite a personal feel for me. During the specific lyrics, "Oh, brother- I can't, I can't get through. Been tryin' hard to reach you, but I don't know what to do. Oh, brother, I can't believe it's true; I'm so scared about the future, and I want to talk to you", and onward, I am reminded of my brother [who passed away two years ago]. This song always strikes that chord in me, and it's one of the songs that describes that side of me PERFECTLY. I love this song, and I interpret it as being about loss and loneliness, and yet an undertone of hope. Coldplay is my hero.
