Oh brother, I can't, I can't get through
I've been trying hard to reach you 'cause I don' know what to do
Oh brother, I can't believe it's true
I'm so scared about the future, and I wanna talk to you
Oh, I wanna talk to you
You can take a picture of something you see
In the future where will I be?
You can climb a ladder up to the sun
Or a write a song nobody has sung
Or do something that's never been done
Are you lost or incomplete?
Do you feel like a puzzle, you can't find your missing piece?
Tell me, how do you feel?
Well, I feel like they're talking in a language I don't speak
And they're talking it to me
So you take a picture of something you see
In the future where will I be?
You can climb a ladder up to the sun
Or write a song nobody has sung
Or do something that's never been done
Or do something that's never been done
So you don't know where you're going and you wanna talk
And you feel like you're going where you've been before
You tell anyone who'll listen, but you feel ignored
Nothing's really making any sense at all, let's talk
Let's talk, let's talk, let's talk

Brother 1 is lost and seeks advice from Brother 2 as is apparent in verse 1:
"Oh brother I can't, I can't get through
I've been trying hard to reach you, cause I don't know what to do
Oh brother I can't believe it's true
I'm so scared about the future and I wanna talk to you
Oh I wanna talk to you"
To which, Brother 2 responds in the chorus and the first half of verse 2:
"You can take a picture of something you see
In the future where will I be?
You can climb a ladder up to the sun
Or write a song nobody has sung
Or do something that's never been done
Are you lost or incomplete?
Do you feel like a puzzle, you can't find your missing piece?
Tell me how do you feel?"
Brother 1 replies, describing his emotions, and again urges his brother to talk to him in detail:
"Well I feel like they're talking in a language I don't speak
And they're talking it to me
So you don't know were you're going, and you wanna talk
And you feel like you're going where you've been before
You tell anyone who'll listen but you feel ignored
Nothing's really making any sense at all
Let's talk, let's talk
Let's talk, let's talk"
I think, like others, that this song is about being uncertain and lost. Maybe because you're confused by problems and situations that are taking place, or because everything is piling up and you don't know where to go from there. I can relate to this song on a personal level, like a lot of people surely can too.
The lines that I really liked were 'Well I feel like they're talking in a language I don't speak, and they're talking it to me.' This person is seeking advice from people and they're giving him ideas, telling him what he can do, but he can't see them helping at all. He tries what they say and nothing changes. I especially like how it says 'talking IT to me.' The 'it' is significant, because they're not talking to him, they're talking IT to him. This again emphasizes the feeling of confusion.
There's more to talk about, but I can't be bothered to write any more. All I can say is that this is a beautiful song that helps me a lot. I love Coldplay so much.:)
I can definitely relate...
I actually have received a message from Max, letting me know that he was alright. It was a dream. It's wonderful to have music and dreams to remember our loved ones by. This is the only way we can get by in this painful world sometimes. Things just aren't fair sometimes..
