We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

I think there are two stories going on here. There's a girl, who the narrator is dating while waiting for his love to 'come around' meaning either to come back, or to change her mind about him. I think the twist is, that while he thinks he is using her, she is using him. "you are the one who's making do" shows that she is using him while going after someone else, the one who did his thing at Cana, the one she has been there since the beginning for. She doesn't get really involved with anyone, including the narrator, because she's waiting for the other guy, but this doesn't pay off and she's "left on the shelf."
There's probably a second meaning in the "woken up when skies are clear" lines, about only making a move when there's no obstacles... But I can't get my silly head around it. In summary, the narrator and the girl are together while both of them waits for/ longs after another person.
This song seems to be about dating somebody while wanting/waiting to reunite with somebody else. I get the impression that the narrator is waiting for his ex to break up with her new boyfriend so they will get back together.
There's something about Jesus going on here. Cana is mentioned in verse 2, and the Bible in verse 3. According to that Bible, Cana was the site of Jesus' first miracle, when he turned water into wine for that wedding. Definitely the start of something big.
What has this got to do with the song? Who knows? Maybe one of Christ's apostles has a crush on Mary Magdalene, and this song is written from his perspective? That'd be pretty cool.
The "mayfly" would, of course, be a reference to mortality.
Ooh! And and and! She makes all sort of confessions to the narrator about the other guy. "I am the one who's privy to..." and then he says what she's told him about the other guy. Those bits are her confessions to the narrator about the other guy.
You can definitely hear a big connection from songs like this and newer material. With different production this song could have easily been on DCW or TLP.

I love the line about the bible. "With it's verses lost in time lost in meaning for the people who surround you." Seriously. Our modern world makes me want to cry--we run our lives based upon the words in a book, written by MEN and interrpreted to mean ridiculous things.
You do realize that Stuart Murdoch is very sympathetic to Christianity right. In other words, he is likely lamenting the fact that he is surrounded by people like you who glibly reject the Bible for specious reasons like the sex of its writers. For instance, the song you are commenting on was written by a MAN.
i interpret the bible line that its a pity that the people around you have lost the meaning of what the bible really is like her diary it holds the truth of life(her life in this case). Faith is not something to pity people for having.
Let's not look too far into the religious significance of this line. I think he's using the Bible to compare her diary to because her diary is long, and it contradicts itself if you don't look at the recorded events and rules to live by from the past in the context in which they were written.
The whole use of the metaphor of a mayfly makes me think the girl that the narrotor is "privy to" is not really what he looks for in a long-term girlfriend. Mayflies only live for about a day I think and so it's as if he'll soon get bored of her, but he takes advantage of her infatuation with him when his girlfriend is not around. That's what I reckon anyways...
I think this is about a love filler, they're only gonna last as long the singer wants them, and then he cuts them off for the one he really wants (the cut off being the Mayfly idea)> he's totally using this dame to get closer to other loves, while getting with her at the same time, but he don' care.
