Lyrics for I've Got A Dark Alley And A Bad Idea Tha... as interpreted by BrandNew1208

I've Got A Dark Alley And A Bad Idea Tha... Lyrics
Joke me something awful just like kisses on the necks of "just friends"
We're the kids who feel like dead ends
And I want to be known for my hits, not just my misses
I took a shot and didn't even come close
At trust and love and hope
And the poets are just kids who didn't make it
Who never had it at all

And the record won't stop skipping
And the lies just won't stop slipping
And besides my reputation's on the line
We can fake it for the airwaves
Force our smiles, baby, half dead
From comparing myself to everyone else around me

Please put the doctor on the phone because I'm not making any sense
Blame everyone but me for this mess
And my back has been breaking from this heavy heart
We never seemed so far
I'm hopelessly hopeful, that you're just hopeless enough
But we never had it at all

"joke me something awful" sounds quite similar to "jinx me something crazy" from tbs...anyone else notice this? they also say "number one with a bullet" in sugar we're going down, and tbs has a song called number five with a bullet. plus, the title of this song is similar to underoath's i have ten friends and a crowbar that says you ain't gonna do jack. coincidence?

maybe setitoff has some sort of a point. maybe the song is about strugling in the industry and maybe they were bing compared to other band, such as tbs and underoath. maybe?

so the thing is "joke something awful", and "jinx me something crazy" sound alike, but mean very different things "joke me something awful" means like you cant be serious, and what follows it "like kisses on the necks of just friends" and in the tbs song "think all the events through" show how different they r, and number 1 with a bullet is like an old saying about being a good shot w/ a gun, and tbs like was sarcastic w/ "number 5 with a bullet" and thats a song name not a like, so your crazy, and as for the song title, eh i dunno, u may have something there

number one with a bullet is a phrase regarding like the music charts. like if you reach number one and there's a bullet next to your name, i think it means a drastic increase or something. Number 5 with a bullet is from the movie high fidelity. so there's coincidences, though some feeelings are common so it can be coincidences.

this song is great, it really takes the tempo of the CD down after nobody puts baby in the corner but sets up nicely for the rest of the CD.

i think this song is about a guy whos is dating a girl who has lots of "guy friends" and she always says that there just friends but she is cought cheating and the rest is just his reaction
a wonderful awsome song his voice is so pritty in it.

I know the first line is supposed to say "just friends," but doen't it sound like Patrick unmistakingly says "best friends?"

I have to agree with flying seal, there was also a lot of disagreeing on the lyrics in "sugar, we're going down" but even though the cd booklet says "just friends" the cd version of the song seems to sound a lot like he is saying "best friends"... any clarification from anybody?

also while we're noticing coincidences...

the line
"And I want to be known for my hits, not just my misses"

is awfully similar to the boys night out song "i got punched in the nose for sticking my face in other peoples business" when they say:
"I hate being famous for my hits and never for my misses "

i think the only reason i even make this comparison is because the song title is unnecessarily long and has a violent undertone, which is something boys night out has been doing for years.

and before someone replies and tells me that fall out boy is awesome and that i need to shut the fuck up, i've been listening to fall out boy since they were local. i can criticize and still enjoy it.

so to me, this song is talking about a boy and girl who are very good friends, but one of them.. the boy, wants more than that.. he loves her so much, and he tried to make it more than friends, and to go out with her, but she turned him down becuase she dosnt belive in herself and him enough that things will work out.. she can kiss him on the neck and say their just friends, but inside its killing him becuase he wants more and he cares about her so much.. he "I took a shot and didn't even come close
At trust and love and hope" as in, he tried to become more with her, and she turned him down and they didnt even come close.. now things are awkard for the two of them, and wants to blame everyone but him for the mess hes created.. and finally "I'm hopelessly hopeful, that you're just hopeless enough" he is so hopefull that one day she will turn around and realise that she loves him.. but shes hopeless at heart

this song isnt about a boy and a girl at all. its about fall out boy, and the scene. least that what i get from it. aside from the first line

We're the kids who feel like dead ends- they dont get enough recognition, and they feel like well dead ends

And I want to be known for my hits, not just my misses
I took a shot and didn't even come close- they want to be known for the good things they do musically, not just the rumors people hear about them, especailly pete cuz he gets it the worst.

At trust and love and hope- all this stuff goes with making the band be successfull.

And the poets are just kids who didn't make it-
Who never had it at all- pete is the poet in this case. and he just feels like nothing good is happening

And the record won't stop skipping
And the lies just won't stop slipping
And besides my reputation's on the line- again with things i said before about rumors

We can fake it for the airwaves
Force our smiles, baby, half dead
From comparing myself to everyone else around me- compairing fall out boy to other bands. they dont want to be the cliched punk/pop/emo band that isnt real with their songs or fans. and everyone knows FOB is real with everything they do.

We never seemed so far
But we never had it at all- i think these 2 both mean that they never really had what other bands have, but i also think this is their way of saying that we are okay with that

now i might be totally off but this is pretty much what i think of this song

i think it could be about someone who's been betrayed or possibly just left out of their circle of friends, and this occurance, whatever it may be, I think has showed the person that these "friends" of theirs aren't really their friends, and never really were at all.

"I took a shot and didn't even come close
At trust and love and hope"

When we make first friends, do we not take a shot at trust? And I think that the person realises that it's time to say goodby to these "friends", to move on, but they don't want to leave their comfort zone, even if the people have hurt them...

"And my back has been breaking from this heavy heart
We never seemed so far
I'm hopelessly hopeful, that you're just hopeless enough
But we never had it at all"

I'm thinking that probably isn't what they intended for the song, but it's my humble interpretation.

I agree with slowdance, and I think the part "fake it for the airwaves" is about him pretending that he's happy when he's not.

justmegger got it exactly, i always thought there was too much.. depth in the lyrics for it to be a song about a girl and a boy-blah blah blah. really cute song though. :)

I think its a guy and a girl....this song is my life. I love the line 'i took a shot and didnt even come close, at trust and love and at hope' man hes sayin he put his heart on the line for a girl, he put everything he had out in the open hoping she would take it...but she didnt. This is me
