How long before I get in?
Before it starts, before I begin?
How long before you decide?
Before I know what it feels like?
Where To, where do I go?
If you never try, then you'll never know
How long do I have to climb,
Up on the side of this mountain of mine?

Look up, I look up at night
Planets are moving at the speed of light
Climb up, up in the trees
Every chance that you get
Is a chance you seize
How long am I gonna stand
With my head stuck under the sand?
I'll start before I can stop
Before I see things the right way up

All that noise, and all that sound
All those places I have found
And birds go flying at the speed of sound
To show you how it all began
Birds came flying from the underground
If you could see it then you'd understand?

Ideas that you'll never find
All the inventors could never design
The buildings that you put up
Japan and China all lit up
The sign that I couldn't read
Or a light that I couldn't see
Some things you have to believe
But others are puzzles, puzzling me

All that noise, and all that sound
All those places I have found
And birds go flying at the speed of sound
To show you how it all began
Birds came flying from the underground
If you could see it then you'd understand
Ah when you see it then you'll understand?

All those signs, I knew what they meant
Some things you can invent
Some get made, and some get sent
Oh
Birds go flying at the speed of sound
To show you how it all began
Birds came flying from the underground
If you could see it then you'd understand
Ah, when you see it then you'll understand?

General Comment:I interpret this as making reference to a child, for example, (who, as most children), is struck by curiosity of wanting to explore the world and know more about life's experiences. The child wants to explore the world and is eager to climb and reach the other side of the mountain, thus, wonders how long he must stay on his "side" of the mountain before reaching the top? He looks up at night and wonders about the world (but this is more like an analogy to things he witnesses from the overt world, but which he's yet to rationalize and fully understand.) He seems to express that although he can't view from the mountain top, he will at least try to get as far as possible (such as a tree, which in relation to a mountain is not much, but he will cease any opportunity to attempt to get answers to all questions, doubts, etc.) When the chorus mentions "all that noise and all that sound, all those places I have found", he answers to by expressing that even the birds that are NOW flying at the "speed of light", (which is now more rapid than sound) too came from the underground - they weren't born that way, knowing to fly so fast or high, but they too started novice and if you "see it", (realize this fact), you'll understand that MOST answers, in due time, will come, but yet, some things you may never have answers to. You will never have answers because as the song states, "
Ideas that you'll never find, All the inventors could never design", because nature has some things that are, and will remain, either unexplained by certainty, or simply unable to duplicate, because "they are sent", not made. In my opinion, it gives the message that all comes in due time, and that eventually, we will get the answers we seek, but with the harsh yet accepting reality that somethings will always remain unanswered, and this in nature, will always keep that child-like curiosity which is magical, yet maturely accepted as an adult. (I'm a big dork, I guess, but I analyze this stuff) LOL

My Interpretation:This song is an expression of confusion and frustration towards God. I have personal experience with this because I want to know what it feels like to be in God's presence. I want to know what it feels like to hear his voice, but he seems to be waiting for something. I become impatient, asking him, "How long before you decide? Before I know what it feels like?" But I get no response and I feel frustrated. "How long do I have to climb, up on the side of this mountain of mine?" This means, when will God finally step in and conquer all of my doubts? When does walking with God get easier?

Then the song goes into a dream-like state, "Planets are moving at the speed of light." And then he says, "Every chance that you get is a chance you seize." In this dream that he has, he finally climbs to the top of the mountain, and is no longer hesitant about taking chances. He is seizing all of the opportunities that come along. But then he wakes up from his dream and realizes that he still is not at the top of the mountain. He feels confused again, asking God, "How long am I gonna stand with my head stuck under the sand?"

"If you could see it then you'd understand." He feels that if God would reveal himself to him, everything would clear up. He wouldn't be confused or frustrated anymore. He would get up to the top of the mountain.

"The sign that I couldn't read." This is him expressing the fact that it is hard to feel God's presence when the only resource he gives us is the Bible, a book. "Or a light that I couldn't see." The light represents Jesus, and he is saying that he can't see him, so he has trouble believing. "Some things you have to believe." This is the frustrating part of Christianity. I personally try my best to believe in God, and I do believe in him. But I wish he would let me hear his voice. "But others are puzzles, puzzling me." This is him saying that when he tries to understand Christianity and put his mind around it, it is a puzzle and it is confusing. I relate to this a lot. I guess that is why people say, "Some things you have to believe."

As to why the song is called Speed of Sound, it could possibly represent him wanting God hurry up and reveal himself to him because he is tired of waiting.

My Interpretation:He's talking about everything being clear to him. Some things are puzzling. The birds, since they fly with their wings, can see everything, and if you can see as much as they do, then you understand what's going on. You won't be ignorant, hence the head stuck under the ground. I guess it's about discovery. How 'it' all began. :)

General Comment:According to The London Times from October 22, 2005, Coldplay admitted they were "trying to recreate" Kate Bush's 1985 hit "Running Up That Hill." Also, some critics accused this of being similar to their previous hit "Clocks." They claimed the piano riff at the beginning was the same as the one from "Clocks" with every second note taken out.

My Interpretation:I take this to be about war, and the governments not telling their citizens what's going on.

Birds go flying at the speed of sound - Bombers and other fighting planes going so fast.

Birds came flying from the underground - Nukes coming from underground bunkers.

All that noise, all that sound - Explosions, gunfire, etc.

All those places that I have found - They're being destroyed.

How long am I gonna can stand with my head stuck under the sand - Ignoring what's going on in the world, not being told what's going on at least.

Ideas that you'll never find or the inventors could never design - Everything that can be cut off by war, or maybe the just incomprehensible idea that people would hurt each other.

The buildings that you put up - The institutions, systems, etc, being destroyed.

All lit up - Obvious explosives imagery.

All those signs I knew what they meant - We can all see war and such coming, just by what's going on in the world.

General Comment:To me, this song is about the beginning of life. Not like from the VERY beginning of all life, but like a child being born.
To me it's about his son/daughter being born and the feelings he has about it.
"When you see it then you'll understand."
I mean it's like he is thinking of all the things he wants to show the child and all the things he wants to do with them and all the stuff they are gonna accomplish.
I don't know if anyone agrees with me, but that's what comes to my mind every time I hear this lovely song.

General Comment:Let's get this bitch straight:

"how long before I get in
before it starts, before I begin
    how long before you decide
before I know what it feels like
    where to?
    Where do I go?
if you've never tried then you'll never know"

I think Chris Martin is a virgin. He wants to know how long before he "gets it in" (p in va-g)and he doesn't know "where [he should] go" or "what it feels like."

"how long am I gonna can stand
with my head stuck under the sand
I start before I can stop"

Classic cumming too early (pm ejac.) he doesn't know how long he'll last and he may even "start before [he] can stop." Moving on.

all that noise, all that sound
all those places that i have found
and birds go flying at the speed of sound
to show how it all began
birds came flying from the underground
if you could see it then you'd understand

The girl is the birds and there is "all that noise" and "all that sound" because he is sticking "it" in "all those places that [he has] found." Which are clearly not the right holes. So she is screaming at him. Rightfully. Moving on.

"some things you have to believe
but others are puzzles, puzzling me"

That's the female orgasm, but he's so uninformed and cannot figure out the clit for shit.
