They carved the message deep within our broken hearts that failed to mend:
Make out kids never had a chance to be best friends.
He's into math and magazines,
Director's cuts and gray-sell green
Armed with her knife and contradictions,
She sees completely through me.
I'm fond of twin peaks,
Afternoons,
Inexpensive wine,
With cordon bleu..
Armed with a plethora of insecurities, we keep each other amused..
Headed for the madness, we are better by design,
It's all we'll ever have to say goodbye..
Say goodbye.
Flown in, sleep over winter break,
Cocktails and miniature mistakes,
Lights out, we're covered in each others' warm embrace..
And we sing..
Headed for the madness, we are better by design,
It's all we'll ever have to say goodbye,
Say goodbye. [x2]
If we keep swimming, maybe this will never die.
We fail to keep in touch these days,
As I'm liquid cold, she's motor grey,
We're hollowed by circumstance that pushed us both away.
We carved a message deep within our broken hearts that failed to mend:
Make out kids never had a chance to be best friends.

This has been my favorite song for years and yet I still ended up in a relationship exactly like it. I guess I should take MCS's advice!
As far as the meaning of this song goes, it seems a similar situation - two young people, probably teenagers, rushed into a relationship and it was rushed, but beautiful at the time. "We're covered in each other's warm embrace" is that kind of closeness from being all cuddled up, like being in bed on a cold winter night falling asleep in each other's arms.
Basically, it's a beautiful song, and so close to my life at the moment, I can't stop singing it!
"She's into math and magazines,
Director's cuts and gray cell green
Armed with an eye for contradictions,
She sees completely through me."
the way i see it, this phrase is first describing her, with the math and magazines, and she also likes extended movies and grey cell green the band.
the next two lines describe (possibly?) why he likes her so much; she sees all his contradictions and sees completely through the bullsh*t.
"I'm fond of Twin Peaks afternoons,
Inexpensive wine with cordon bleu..
Armed with a plethora of insecurities,
we keep each other amused.."
here i find it too indubitable that he uses "armed with (adj + noun)" in both the first and second verses; he must have meant something by them. so here he's saying they both are self-conscious and use them as satire against each other, but in a playful way. and the obvious first two lines of this verse mean he likes the marathon shows and eating cheaply.
"Hooray for the madness, we are better by design,
Let's hope we'll never have to say goodbye..
Say goodbye."
too obvious here. He loves the instability or what appears to be instability in his relationship, but they balance each other and are "better by design" together than apart; they hope they never lose each other.
"They carved a message deep within our broken hearts that failed to mend:
Make out kids never had a chance to be best friends."
now, at the beginning of the song, without the rest of the song, it seems that this can be taken literally as they have no chance of friendship because they are "make out friends"
with a little deeper thinking and seeing the rest of the lyrics, as well as the use of this line at both the beginning and end of the song, it almost seems as if he tries to first convey that first message, but then goes on to say no, because of all these situations that we've been through together, we are so much more than just make out friends. the end line just means to me that hes kind of throwing it back in the faces of those who doubted and argued.
but, as others have said, this is all pure speculation without the original writer's full detailed analysis.
...but despite all of that, you'll never forget them...
"We fail to keep in touch these days.../Hollowed by circumstance that pushed us both away"
"Hooray for the madness, we are better by design,
Let's hope we'll never have to say goodbye..
Say goodbye."
I think this part is saying,
"hooray for the madness" - They finally got together.
"we are better by design" - The awkwardness of our hook up wont tear us apart.
"let's hope we never have to say goodbye" - We'll stay friends.
Simply put, I think, the song is about two friends getting together thinking that nothing will change between them, but it does change and they drift apart.
