Lyrics for Looks Just Like The Sun as interpreted by max17

Looks Just Like The Sun Lyrics
Looks just like the sun
Looks just like it
Looks just like the sun
Looks just like it
He looks just like the sun
Looks just like it
But a breathing, thinking one

Heart is pounding in his chest
Reaches suddenly for his gun
Ship is sailing in the west
A flower that would be his fun

Tree of antlers on his head
Weary red split-open eyes
I'm on the corner thinkin' 'bout my bed
He just stands there and signifies

Looks just like the sun

Gold and red, the colours change
And she can't forget
Turning back
I thought I knew someone
You better check your watch
I think it's time you left
In darkness still
It's obvious to everyone

Looks just like the sun

I love how this song comes full circle.

"looks just like it ..
he looks just like the sun,
..
darkness still, it's obvious to everyone
well it looks just like the sun
looks just like it"

It sounds like it's about a soldier. He wakes up suddenly and reaches for his gun, as if he's so bugged out by all that he's been experiencing.
"Ship is sailing in the west" life is happening back home, while he is trapped over seas.
He's thinking about HIS bed.
Gold and red the colours change... I think gold and red are the Soviet colours, could this be the ever changing enemy and a comment on how pointless it is to be fighting, because it's inevitably going to lead to another war.
I just came up with this, so it's probably a flawed argument. Help me out. I love this song.

i agree with the soldier theroy. he is thinking about his family, his bed, but hes going home and everyone gloryfies him thats why he looks like the sun and maybe forever changing means that people dont really reconize him because what he saw overseas had so much effect anyways just thought that up as i went could be wrong.

Turning back, you know I thought I knew, thought I knew someone
You better check your words,
I think it's time you left.

it's like. he thought he knew who this person was
and the more he got to know him the more he got to know that the person was completely opposite
"you better check your words"
he wants the person to make sure that they know what theyre doing to him and what theyre saying

"i think its time you left"
he doesnt want a part of this
so basically what i think its that hte begining hes in love
and at the end. hes not sure why he ever felt that way

thats just my thought

It seems like they're really channeling Jack Johnson in this song. Johnson's definitely not one of my favorite artists, but these guys do a good job of making the suave, laid-back music that he does.

You'd better check your watch, not words. You'd better check your watch; I think it's time you left.

This was the first song I ever heard by Broken Social Scene. I can't remember exactly where I got it from, or how I even found out about them, but I do remember having this song on repeat for about 5 hours. I think what made me fall in love with it is "Heart is pounding in his chest..." and the three lines that follow it.

I think it's about someone sleeping, daydreaming, the sun is a memory of someone, very strong, almost real, maybe painful when u look at it for too long? In short it's like the sun.

Looks just like the sun,
looks just like you
Looks just like the sun,
looks just like it
Well, he looks just like the sun,
looks just like you

suddenly he wakes up, possibly afraid, at least he's nervous, I think that's why there's the gun in this sentence, it's more like a metaphor of his state of mind. Next lines are clearly about what does he see when he's up. The reality is catching up with him. But still he remembers his dream...

But I'm breathing, thinking one....
Heart is pounding in his chest
reaches suddenly for his gun
ship is sailing in the west
Flower that could be his fun....
Tree of families on his head
weary red split open eyes
I'm on the corner thinking about my bed
bla bla something signifies(?).....
Turning back, you know I thought I knew, thought I knew someone

He can't forget about this person, and the memory returns to him just like the sun does when it comes up gold and goes down red every day. He cannot forget it, it's just so important, like the sun is when it shines on us every day.

Gold and red the colours change as you can't forget
Turning back, you know I thought I knew, thought I knew someone
You better check your words,
I think it's time you left.

The memory leaves him, but he feels empty, dark inside. It's obvious that his in suffering to everyone else, even to him, and it's like that... until the memory returns, just like the sun after the night. I think it's safe to assume that the memory keeps him alive, just like sun gives life to earth.

To he, darkness still it's obvious to everyone
darkness still, its obvious to everyone
still it's obvious to every,
well it looks just like the sun
looks just like it

So I think it's about about someone who still loves someone whom he had lost. The memory pains him, but at the same time sustains him.

it seems to be about a tired someone sitting on a bench watching the sunset just thinking. the lyrics are pretty stream of conscious, and they return to what's in front of this person, the sun.

"turning back, i thought i knew, i thought i knew someone" he thought he recognized someone's voice/footsteps behind him.
"gold and red and colors change" = sunset.
"breathing... heart is pounding" these are all pretty immediate experiences, it's probably just stream of consciousness lyrics they added to a song they wrote sitting around watching a sunset

I like the voice talking to Kevin throughout the song. As for the meaning, I'm probably way off base here, but to me it is about a man watching his ex- walk away into the sunset - along with their son. The man is loosing his source of sunshine and the love of his life. He just stands there all night remembering how they walked out on him into the sunset. Very sad, but beautiful song. I love this song. I love anything by BSS. They have become my favorite group.

I felt a lot more shallow about this song, but thats kinda what I got out of it. Looks just like the sun to me sounds kinda oxymoronic, oxymoronish? anyway the oxymoronistic part is that its a sun, and they always say dont look at it. Its generally accepted to not stare at the sun. the middle to me sounds like some dude at a party (yes, i said shallow) looking around, kinda nevous (reaches for his gun) especially the "turning back thought I knew someone" part. It happens. I've done it. and you can't watch. You know your being watched, but nobody can watch, and neither can you, but you look around like you are, but you're too cool to. But you cant even watch this dude either - it's not cool.

It talks about how used to society and its rules we are. What i just said, that situation, is possibly the dumbest thing ever. Watching people not wathing people? sounds like a party to me! and that's just what theyre saying - Look at some of the rules you follow, and question their importance.

I read all of those up there, did you?
I really want to know what someone thinks of mine
LOVE BSS

Broken Social Scene is one of the most inventive bands out there right now, and this is no exception, however old this song is. That being said, I was almost (yes, almost) hurt by the Jack Johnson comment. I highly doubt that Kevin Drew was trying to channel JJ's style. Hahah, Kevin's a much more intelligent man; he knows better than to copy simple minded guitar-guy-at-the-party music. If anything, it's an example of how stripped down and bare this band can be, while still maintaining the all around brilliance of their much more layered songs.

As far as the meaning, I agree with sbto, especially "I think it's about about someone who still loves someone whom he had lost". The imagery in the song conjures up all sorts of romantic feelings - and by romantic I mean it in either sense of the word - actual romance and also simply picturesque moments.

This song is so rich in metaphors it makes me need a glass of milk after listening to it.

I DO really like the idea of the party scenario. But yeah, "watching people not watching people" makes perfect sense to me, and I love the concept. It brings the song to an entirely different level that I had never even thought about. Hah, and I think that's what I love so much about BSS - their music is so versatile - you hear something new every time you turn it on.

I think Andrew Whiteman sings this one.

When they played this live in Sydney this year Whiteman provided the vocals.

That gig was quite amazing actually, could not have been happier with the set list.

I always take songs in a very interpersonal way, even if it is self-centered because that's how I connect with the songs.

He looks just like the sun, but that doesn't mean he is the sun. This expression could be because in someone else's eyes, he could be glorified or they could be in love with him.

[Heart is pounding in his chest / reaches suddenly for his gun / Ship is sailing in the west / A flower that would be his fun] -- A sense of panic, searching for his gun suddenly. Going west, he comes across a girl, obviously.

[Tree of antlers on his head / Weary red split-open eyes / I'm on the corner thinkin' 'bout my bed / He just stands there and signifies ] -- Mass of problems in his head or maybe a lot of worries. The red eyes make me think he's drunk or fucked up. While I'm busy wondering about sleep, he's just there as a meaning to me.

[ Gold and red, the colours change / And she can't forget / Turning back I thought I knew someone / You better check your watch / I think it's time you left / In darkness still, It's obvious to everyone / Looks just like the sun ] -- The seasons change, I can't forget. You think you know everything about someone, but when you find you don't, you tell them to get the fuck out. Still in my darkest hours, I think about you and how you look just like the fucking sun.

I fell in love with this song the moment I heard it.

Just like WorshipAandC, the line "Heart is pounding in his chest" gets me every time. Something about the combination of the music and the guy's voice when he sings it. It's beautiful.
