Lyrics for American Baby as interpreted by walrusstapler

American Baby Lyrics
If these walls came crumbling down
And fell so hard to make us lose our faith
From what’s left you’d figure it out
Still make lemonade taste like a sunny day

Stay beautiful baby
I hope you stay American baby
American baby

Nobody’s laughing now
God’s grace lost and the devil is proud
But I’ve been walking for a thousand miles
One last time I could see you smile

I, I hold, hold on to you
You bring me hope I’ll see you soon
And if I don’t see you
Oh, I’m afraid we’ve lost the way

Stay beautiful baby
I hope you stay American baby
American baby
American baby

I hold on to you
You lift me up
And always will
I see you in light
Hope I don’t get left behind

I, I hold, hold on to you
You bring me hope I’ll see you soon
And if I don’t see you
Oh, I’m afraid we’ve lost the way

Stay beautiful baby
I hope you stay American baby
I hope you stay beautiful baby
I hope you stay American baby
American baby
American baby

American Baby hopefully is not the best dmb can do. These guys are the kings and this does not hold up to the other radio releases (i.e. Ants, Crash into me, Crush, What would you say). This song is certainly about patroitism as it was written the day after the election, even though dmb would have obviously been upset after the election results. Hopefully, other songs on the cd will be much better than these.

I think that yes, this song is not the best our kings have summined up BUT it certainly has a DMB feel to it, in fact this song makes me feel as if it belongs to the Everyday album.

I do enjoy this song very much thought cause after listening to it, it becomes so clear that this is another one of those awesome songs that the entire group put heart in soul into.

Plus Dave Heads, no worries, because as we all know from the past, that the radio singles are almost NEVER the best songs on the cd, there simply the songs that DMB thinks the public would enjoy most so stay tear free for I thing "Stand Up"(new album) has some great things in store for us!

if you are in any doubt go download Joy Ride and sugar will plus many other new songs from www.weeklydavespeak.com !!!

and yes, obviously this is another one of DMB's genius patriotic

I agree with BigEyedFish that it could fit in well with Everyday. Everyday wasn't at all the group's best. But, some of the live versions of "Everday" itself, were excellent. Also, in true DMB form, they don't always put out the best song first. All things said, the song isn't bad, but I can't wait for "Stand Up"

I think the lyrics to this song are extremely weak. The chorus is very catchy, but you can't really sing along with the verses. The music, however, is setter and sounds a lot more like the Dave Matthews Band. They seem to have lost their sound with the last two records, which were both poor. I was really diggin' the jam part at the end but it seemed to end too suddenly, I was wondering if anyone knows if the radio cut a jam out like they did with "Crush" or if the song is just short and ends like that, thanks.

The lyrics are weak. But this song just makes you feel solid. It just sounds good and gives off that vibe. It's a good song over-all. But you guys are picky about DMB songs. Everyday was a great album. It wasn't the 'typical' album and that doesn't make it bad. New things are good too. This song is no different.

i'm not quite sure what this song means though in my mind i imagine that we shouldn't give up, being Americans. And that we shouldn't loose hope. I have to listen to it more to get a full grasp on it.

the first time I heard this song, the part that intrigued me was Dave's characteristic percussion-guitar that he is so famous for. It's not even that complicated, its just D-B-D-B then he goes down the scale from D, but he made it so catchy the way he played it. And yes, the first time I heard it, I thought it was decent, but now I realize that it's actually a very good song.

I agree with DaveMatthewsgirl. Woah, okay people. I don't think you're looking deep enough into these amazing lyrics. The song means that America has had some tough times in the past few years and that the country as a whole has changed. We are losing our values of which this country was built on. He's telling us to stay American, stay beautiful, and not forget what our country is all about.

and yes, maybe its not the best that DMB has to give. the rest of the new album should be better and will be, damn it!

thank you eatdrinkbmerry, i agree with you completely. Being connected with the war, elections, 9/11, and terrorists. Dave is telling us we should stay together as a country cuz if we seperate things will go down. We have to stick together to fight the evil away.

I love this song, been stuck in my head... Can't wait to buy the new album! Isn't it called Stand Up? I'm pretty sure that's what it's called... Anyone heard the other songs on it?

Cant wait! going to their concert on June 26!!!!!! WOOT! I LOVE TICKETMASTER!

i love this song, it's so great, as for the political motives, i think it's not really taking a shot at anything, but taking a look at our country over the years, and that dave hopes that our country lives up to what it used to be back around ww1 and ww2 and not morph into the "bully" of the world

and another note to Just1 BigEyedFish, unfourtunatly, joy ride and sugar will are not going to be on the album, if you go to www.antsmarching.org you can see the track list, both joy ride and sugar will are on the b-side, so you can get them by pre-ordering the album through the Warehouse, but sadly they're not on the album

The lyrics/meaning are great, but the style will take some getting used to.
I fell in love with the traditional DMB, and I hope they don't stray too far from that.
I can't see myself enjoying this one live either, but then again DMB is the best band to hear live, ever, period!!

I think this song is a question to the country: \"Where are we going, what are we doing as a country?\". This song is about hope, hope to rebuilt this country that \"lost the way\".

4 years after the 9/11: Bin Ladden still missing, Iraq still not democratic, gazoline cost still going up, 1550+ soldiers dead, biggest deficit ever for the US, new record for unemployment and the situation of the isreal/palestine dirty war is even worse... this is the sense i get from \"God’s grace lost and the devil is proud\"..... the terrorist might be very proud of what they done.

This song is about hope:

\"From what’s left you’d figure it out
Still make lemonade taste like a sunny day\"
\"But I’ve been walking for a thousand miles
One last time I could see you smile
I, I hold, hold on to you
You bring me hope I’ll see you soon\"

The little things make this country great, each and everyone. The country might have made some bad decisions, but still the people, the \"American Baby\" are still great.

As a canadian, i think this song is a message of DMB to others not to judge every american people for the bad politic the country might have made.

Netman basically saying everything i said. though is right

i saw the music video and i was correct, it was about America.

If these walls came crumbling down
And fell so hard to make us lose our faith-
After the twin towers fell down we were sad and remorse with all the deaths and it made us weak.

From what’s left you’d figure it out
Still make lemonade taste like a sunny day-
It mean we've made the best out of what we can, looking on the brightside.

Stay beautiful baby
I hope you stay American baby
American baby-
Don't give up, keep your hope and faith in our country we will grow strong and live long.

Nobody’s laughing now
God’s grace lost and the devil is proud-
Nobody is laughing becuase we were taken of our loved ones, the terroists killing those people and our solidiers off in war.

But I’ve been walking for a thousand miles
One last time I could see you smile-
Meaning he's seen us Americans and we've all been affected by this tragedy and that all of us feel sympathetic for people who lost someone.

I, I hold, hold on to you
You bring me hope I’ll see you soon
And if I don’t see you
Oh, I’m afraid we’ve lost the way-
Meaning he's hoping for our country to be back together and that if we don't hope for our country we'll just end up living apart. Instead of a country, being together.

That's what the song means to me, it's about American Freedom. It' about the tragadies and events that have happen in this country. Election, Sept. 11, Iraq, Sadamm, Afghanistan, Bin Laden, terroists, solidiers, war, and other things that are effecting our nation today. He's talking about all of us Americans standing together and having hope in ourselves, knowing we can fight this. That we are strong, we can get threw this!
