Lyrics for Consequence of Sounds as interpreted by medicine

Consequence of Sounds Lyrics
My rhyme ain't good just yet
My brain and tongue just met
and they ain't friends so far
My words don't travel far
They tangle in my hair
and tend to go nowhere
They grow right back inside
right past my brain and eyes
into my stomach juice
where they don't serve much use
No healthy calories
nutrition values
and I absorb back in
the words right through my skin
They sit there festering inside my bowels

The consonants and vowels
The consequence of sounds
The consonants and vowels
The consequence of sounds

Got a soundtrack in my mind
all the time
Kids screaming from too much beat up and they don't even rhyme
They just stand there
on a street corner
skin tucked in and meat side out and shouting
I'd like to turn them down but there ain't no knob
Born into picket fences
not into picket lines
All this hippie shit's for the sixties
Only cliché in our times
but what if one of these days your heart will just stop ticking
and they sort of just don't find you till your cubicle is reeking?

The consonants and vowels
The consequence of sounds
The consonants and vowels
The consequence of sounds

Did you know that the gravedigger's still getting stuck in the machine
even though it's a whole other daydream?
It's another town
It's another world
where the kid's asleep
and the loans are paid
and the lawns are mowed
What'd you think
all the gravediggers were gone
just 'cause one song is done?
There's always another one
waiting right around the bend
till this one ends
Then it begins squeaky clean and it starts all over again

The weather report keeps on tossing and turning
predicting and warning and warning and warning of
possible leakage from news publications and
possible leakage from news tv stations
That very same morning right next to her coffee
she noticed some bleeding and heard hollow coughing
The national geographic was being too graphic
when all she had wanted to know was the traffic

The world's got a nosebleed, it said, and we're flooding
but we keep on cutting the trees in the forest
and we keep on paying those freaks on the tv
who claim they will save us but want to enslave us and
sweating like demons, they scream through our speakers
but we leave the sound on cause silence is harder and
no one's the killer and no one's the martyr
The world that has made us can no longer contain us
and prophets are silent then rotting away 'cause

The consonants and vowels
The consequence of sounds
The consonants and vowels
The consequence of sounds

My rhyme ain't good just yet
My brain and tongue just met
and they ain't friends so far
My words don't travel far
They tangle in my hair
and tend to go nowhere
They grow right back inside
right past my brain and eyes
into my stomach juice
where they don't serve much use
No healthy calories
nutrition values
and I absorb back in
the words right through my skin
They sit there festering inside my bowels

The consonants and vowels
The consequence of sounds
The consonants and vowels
The consequence of sounds

I have no idea what this song is about.... It reminds me so much of Jack Johnson though, the fourth verse especially. When she's more talking, and not really singing, I love how you can occasionally hear hints of her beautiful beautiful voice.

It is clearly about making music. Writning it, singing it, listening to it and just thinking about it. The first verse is a brilliant display of her toughts about being an artist. The second is, I belive, about not being able to escape it.
"Got a soundtrack in my mind,
All the time. Kids-
Screamin' from too much beat up
And they don't even rhyme"
And since it's a Regina Spektor song, random toughts about life is of course mixed in with the original message. But I also think that this, more than any other of her songs, is about the meaning of life:
"Just cause one song is done
There’s always another one,
Waiting right around the bend,
Till this one ends,
Then it begins
Quickly, then it starts all over again." Like she says in Ghost of Corporate Future "The world is everlasting. It's coming and it's going"

Just cause one song is done
There’s always another one,
Waiting right around the bend,
Till this one ends,
Then it begins
Quickly, then it starts all over again.

Instead of quickly, i think that she is saying squeaky clean, as if with a clean slate, when she says squeaky, she even squeaks her voice, possibly the only aritst who could get away with that lol

i think this song is basically about how people use words and how they affect our lives, everything from the media to children. i think there was a reason she used the word "consequence" of sounds, because it sounds more like a criticism than anything else.

this is the cutest song! if she made a whole hip hip album it would be just amazing.

"But a one of these days your heart
Will just stop ticking,
And they sorta just don't find you till your cubicle is reeking."

I think this says a lot.

i'm reposting the above lyrics w/my own corrections in caps (& without the chorus to save room):

I don't really see this song as being a reference to her own struggles with writing songs. I think that her lyrics are more annoyed than anything. In the first verse, she does admit that she has her own problems with words, but when she enters the verse after the chorus she is complaining about the thugs on streetcorners that are always "freestyling".

The reference to gravediggers goes back to Pavlov's Daughter. "Just 'cause one song is done, there's always another one" implies that when she writes something for one song it maintains its truth for every other song.

The long verse comments on her dislike of the media, and also has the strong line about how we all just accept all the harsh sounds because we are more afraid of living in silence. The prophets (whom she uses as a symbol for truth) are silent because they realize no one will listen to them with all the other sounds that are present.

At the end, she repeats the verse to emphasize its importance and the fact that she is aware of her own struggles with words.

"The prophets (whom she uses as a symbol for truth) are silent because they realize no one will listen to them with all the other sounds that are present."

This comment reminds me alot of the Kris Kristofferson song To Beat The Devil that goes:
"...And you still can hear me singing to the people who don't listen to the things that I am saying, praying some one's gonna hear.
And I guess I'll die explaining how the things that they complain about are things they could be changing, hoping some one's gonna care."

In this song, him being the prophet as a songwriter. It's also a song about writing songs/being a song writer, which I still think this is...

I am a slam poet, and i heard this song and it spoke to me. It is about writing and what life gives you to write about. I also agree with the changes posted by bittersweet637. I just found Regina 3 weeks ago and was an instant fan! This is by far my favorite song. The verse that speaks to me is the first...

My rhyme ain't good just yet,
My brain and tongue just met,
And they ain't friends, so far,
My words don’t travel far,
They tangle in my hair,
And tend to go nowhere,
They grow right back inside,
Right past my brain and eyes
Into my stomach juice
Where they don’t serve much use,
No healthy calories, nutrition values.
And I absorb back in
The words right through my skin
They sit there festering inside my bowels

that is how i feel when i write my poetry, especially the getting stuck in my hair. My hair tends to attack and i swear half of my poetry is in my hair alone. i ♥ regina!

It obviously has to do with Regina and how she can't turn of the thoughts in her heads. But I really think that a lot of it is about how you can see skin and the outside, but she almost wants to turn herself inside out because then she would just have superficial things on the inside and all the complicated shit out for everyone else to deal with. It's like she knows and thinks things that she can never, ever explain.

I like how shes almost.. rapping. haha.

I like this alot:
"And we keep on paying those freaks on the TV,
Who claim they will save us but want to enslave us.
And sweating like demons they scream through our speakers
But we leave the sound on 'cause silence is harder.
And no one’s the killer and no one’s the martyr
The world that has made us can no longer contain us
And profits are silent then rotting away"

that part clearly speaks of our society and the fact that television rules our life for the most part. When she says that silence is harder.. it's true. Alot of the time people can't just simply sit in a room and think.. or relax in silence. We always have to be entertained. And no one is doing anything about it.

I think it's a testiment to humanity, how we live our lives, and how we shouldn't stop doing what we wanna do just because we look stupid doing it. Do what your heart tells you and don't listen to the naysayers, or else in the end you're going to be forgotten.

I think that this song is, quite frankly, about the consequence of sounds. I think its message towards us is that we have to just stop and listen. Evidence of this is the song title and "...we leave the sound on 'cause silence is harder" and various other lyrics.

I think this song is about how corrupt everything is. Especially the media. The whole bit about the the National Geographic being too graphic.
I've been loving this song too much lately. I sing it all day, and it plays in my dreams. Just love it.

i think it's about how sounds can effect things in both good and bad ways. it's about how people only listen to what they want to hear and block out the rest even if i's important like the environment. "the weather report keeps on tossing and turning, predicting and warning." frightening things are happening to the world and people are ignoring them. the consequence of sounds is that they dont' always travel far.

FIRST OFF I HATE WHEN PEOPLE SAY A SONG IS "clearly" something.....sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.....

and i love this song because it challanges the norm....

i believe that it is about writing songs nd about the corruption of the world....

I like this part:

Did you know that the gravedigger's still
Gettin' stuck in the machine
Even tough it's a whole other daydream.
It's another town it's another world,
Where the kids are asleep, where the loans are paid
And the lawns are mowed.
Whad'ya think?
All the gravediggers were gone?
Just cause one song is done
There’s always another one,
Waiting right around the bend,
Till this one ends,
Then it begins
Quickly, then it starts all over again.

Because I remember reading on Wikipedia that she writes alot about stuff in her head, and she's got an album called "Mary Meets the Gravediggers..." and the gravediggers thing must be a recurring image in her mind, and she's like, telling herself that it should be no surprise that when she finds another song, the gravediggers are back even though it's a different "daydream," and she's also showing how there's constantly songs playing in her head that she makes up.

Ok, so here's what the lyrics really are. : )

My rhyme ain't good just yet,
My brain and tongue just met,
And they ain't friends, so far,
My words don’t travel far,
They tangle in my hair,
And tend to go nowhere,
They grow right back inside,
Right past my brain and eyes
Into my stomach juice
Where they don’t serve MUCH USE--not "my juice"
NO HEALTHY CALORIES--not "all melted calories"
Nutrition values.
And I absorb back in
The words right through my skin
They sit there festering inside my bowels

The consonants and vowels
The consequence of sounds
The consonants and vowels

Got a soundtrack in my mind,
All the time. Kids-
Screamin' from too much beat up
And they don't even rhyme,
They just stand there, on a street corner,
Skin tucked in
And meat side out and shot,
And I’d like to turn them down
But there ain't no knob.
BORN--not "run"--into picket fences
Not into picket lines.
All this hippie-shit for the 60's
KIND OF CLICHE--not "and another cliche"--for our time. But,
But a one of these days your heart
Will just stop ticking,
And they sorta just don't find you till your cubicle is reeking.

SQUEAKY CLEAN--not "quickly"--then it starts all over again.

The weather report keeps on

I find it somewhat sad that it says "profits are silent" instead of "proPHets".
It makes so much more sense the other way, ha.
This song to me means several things.
-Criticizing media
-Criticizing people for following too much of a routine "They sorta just don't find you til your cubicle is reeking"
etc.
i love Regina.
