Am I more than you bargained for yet?
I've been dying to tell you
Anything you want to hear
Because that's just who I am this week

Lie in the grass
Next to the mausoleum
I'm just a notch in your bedpost
But you're just a line in a song
(Notch in your bedpost
But you're just a line in a song)

Drop a heart and break a name
We're always sleeping in
And sleeping for the wrong team

We're going down, down
In an earlier round
And sugar, we're going down swinging
I'll be your number one with a bullet
A loaded God complex
Cock it and pull it

We're going down, down
In an earlier round
And sugar, we're going down swinging
I'll be your number one with a bullet
A loaded God complex
Cock it and pull it

Is this more than you bargained for yet?
Oh, don't mind me
I'm watching you two from the closet
Wishing to be the friction in your jeans

Isn't it messed up
How I'm just dying to be him?
I'm just a notch in your bedpost
But you're just a line in a song
(Notch in your bedpost
But you're just a line in a song)

Drop a heart and break a name
We're always sleeping in
And sleeping for the wrong team

We're going down, down
In an earlier round
And sugar, we're going down swinging
I'll be your number one with a bullet
A loaded God complex
Cock it and pull it

We're going down, down
In an earlier round
And sugar, we're going down swinging
I'll be your number one with a bullet
A loaded God complex
Cock it and pull it

Down, down in an earlier round
And sugar, we're going down swinging
I'll be your number one with a bullet
A loaded God complex
Cock it and pull it

We're going down, down
In an earlier round
(Take aim at myself)
And sugar, we're going down swinging
(Take back what you said)
I'll be your number one with a bullet
(Take aim at myself)
A loaded God complex
Cock it and pull it

We're going down, down
(Down, down)
Down, down
(Down, down)
We're going down, down
(Down, down)
A loaded God complex
Cock it and pull it

We're going down, down
In an earlier round
(Take aim at myself)
And sugar, we're going down swinging
(Take back what you said)
I'll be your number one with a bullet
(Take aim at myself)
A loaded God complex
Cock it and pull it

General Comment:"I'm just a notch in your bedpost
But you're just a line in a song" these lyrics are my favorite part of the whole song. i didnt get any profound meaning from it but I thinks it's basically about a guy telling his slutty ex that he's over her and she's not as hot as she thinks she is. And they both seem to have been cheating on each other "
    We're always sleeping in
And sleeping for the wrong team"

General Comment:Woah, some people's explanations are... interesting.

To be honest, I just saw it though [the object of discussion] is projecting some sort of fantasy onto/about the singer/protagonist, and the singer is responding by being incredibly sarcastic about the matter.

"Am I more than you bargained for yet?"
The singer's asking something along the lines of 'have you realized that I'm an actual person yet and not just a robot created for your own personal delusions'

"I've been dying to tell you
    Anything you want to hear
Because that's just who I am this week"
So this is your fantasy of the week? Right

"I'm just a notch in your bedpost
But you're just a line in a song"
really feeds into the entire 'God Complex' idea that drives the entire song. Like the person is placating themselves by thinking that the whole reason why they haven't been in an extended relationship/fantasy is because they're such a goddamn casanova.

If you're unfamiliar with the term, a God Complex is (oh shit how do I explain) kinda like you believe that you are sort the main character of the world and therefore everything (should) revolves around you (maybe kind of a cross between a narcissist and a controlfreak).

Certain symptoms of someone with a God complex might be:
    - imagines love triangles/any form of polygons/(just) relationships (period) around them (when there really is nothing there)
"I'm watching you two from the closet
Wishing to be the friction in your jeans
    Isn't it messed up
How I'm just dying to be him?" (I see this as deep sarcasm)
    - demonstrating how wanted they are/how lucky you are/their awesome prowess in the game of love by "casually" mentioning famous people they have "conquered", hearts they've broken and/or famous hearts they've broken
"Drop a heart and break a name"
    - coming up with random excuses for why things didn't work out(/never actually happened)
    "We're always sleeping in
And sleeping for the wrong team"
    - believing [the object of interest (who may or may not even know the person's name)] to be secretly pining away (don't have any actual proof? That's just because they're doing it secretly) in some romanticky setting from gothic romance novel (vampires?(just kidding)(people do actually have a rather morbid idea of romance these days *cough*50 shades of gray*cough*))
    "Lie in the grass
    Next to the mausoleum"
    - they're a stalker

Wow, that escalated quickly (am I getting more agressive near the end of that or is that just me?).
And I think the chorus seems to nicely wrap up this thesis with
"I'll be your number one with a bullet
    A loaded God complex
    Cock it and pull it"
'[In your mind] all you have to is start thinking we like you [/you like us] and then all of a sudden you are our queen, our God, and we are but pawns to play out whatever depraved scenario you come up with or you explain it away with some nonsensical excuse that doesn't hurt your ego like 'they just couldn't handle how awesome I am''

The more I think about it, He's Just Not That Into implies that we all suffer from some sort of God Complex. And not just women, there are definitely dudes out there who have received imaginary "signals" and built up imaginary "relationships".

    Believe me.
I may have just ruined this song for myself.

My Interpretation:This is a very interesting song which deals with sexual obsession.

Throughout there are overstated parallels between suicidal thoughts and trying to impress the girl. This can be discarded as an artefact of the genre.

The protagonist has a one-night stand with a girl who is a serial temptress, with notches on her bedpost. The protagonist is a bit more sensitive and reacts melodramatically by putting her in his song. The mausoleum is an important metaphor to show how out of proportion he has built up his memories of her. Lying in the grass shows he's wallowing a bit.

"Is this more than you bargained for yet?" introduces two verses in which his attempts to get her attention become pathological. In the first verse he has destroyed his personality to be whatever she wants, week to week. In the second he is further abjecting his personality by wishing to be the alpha male he's watching her have sex with.

Masturbation is also a theme. He equates his penis to a gun which is ultimately being held to his own head, though he wishes to hold it to hers. "Cock it and pull it" references the masturbation he is doing over his memories of the tryst. "Number one with a bullet" has three meanings. First it continues the violence/attraction metaphor. But it also references the song he's been writing, he wants it to go top of the charts for her, the bullet signifies a swift rise in the Billboard charts. He suggests he has a "God complex" connected to his phallus and male sexuality. This might be a clue as to why he can't take the idea of being disposable, he thinks he's worth more than that. Since the masturbation involves a metaphorical threat of violence or coercion he dreams of having power over the woman as she is the one exerting power over him in real life.

General Comment:To me, the song meaning is pretty simple:

It's about being into someone who doesn't feel the same, he knows he is making himself look an idiot chasing her; "Drop a heart, break a name" (and the moose ears in the music video) ,and he hates himself for it,"take back what you said, take aim at myself"

And it's all told from an over-emotional, teenage point of view!:

"we're always sleeping in and sleeping for the wrong team"
"i'm watching you two from the closet"
I think these two lines are deliberately written to provoke idea's that perhaps the song is about a gay love interest but they can actually just be taken to mean choosing to sleep with the wrong people; "sleeping for the wrong team" and being secretly jealous as in the expression "skeletons in the closet".

"lie in the grass next to the mausoleum"- well, laying next to loads of dead bodies to ponder how sad it is you're not liked as much back is pretty "emo"!

"that's just who i am this week"- i think this refers to the fickle nature of young people and their ever changing emotions

"a loaded god complex, cock it and pull it"
lots of people say this is a suicidal reference and i guess that would correspond with my interpretation too.

My Opinion:I think this song is about a guy who calls his girlfriend Sugar. And they have sex: "We're going down", but he doesn't have a condom: "cock it and pull it". So after having unprotected sex, she isn't impressed with him, so she dumps him and goes out with another guy, and he's really jealous. He secretly watches as Sugar dry humps the other guy and he's jealous: "Wishing I could be the friction in your jeans". Yes, this song is about jealousy, but a main theme is also sex. That's right. SEX. This is like the most white trash popular teenage song. Grow up.

General Comment:Someone on one of the first few pages (I haven't read them all) said this was about an ex-girlfriend who told people that every song they wrote was about her. Using that premise, I can see how all the lyrics fit.

Am I more than you bargained for yet?

You started this battle but I'm going to raise it to a higher level. Is this what you had in mind?

I've been dying to tell you
    Anything you want to hear
Because that's just who I am this week

You've told people I lied to you, telling you anything you wanted to hear just because I felt like it.

    Lie in the grass
    Next to the mausoleum

The grounds of a mausoleum are rarely well cared for. The grass is probably tall and uncut, just the kind of place where you'd find a snake. i.e. He's calling her a snake.

I'm just a notch in your bedpost
But you're just a line in a song

You tell people that I don't mean anything to you. I'm just a notch in your bedpost. Guess what, you're nothing but a line in my song.

Drop a heart and break a name

You're talking crap about us, trying to ruin our reputation.

    We're always sleeping in
And sleeping for the wrong team

You've told people the band members are all lazy and don't do anything all day. Oh, and that we're gay.

    We're going down, down
    In an earlier round
And sugar, we're going down swinging

We had our time, our relationship ended early, but we're still taking swings at each other.

I'll be your number one with a bullet

I'm the number one thing in your life because you won't let it go.

    A loaded God complex
    Cock it and pull it

You think everything's about you. You're got a God complex and keep aiming it at us.

Is this more than you bargained for yet?

Is this song too much for you?

    Oh, don't mind me
I'm watching you two from the closet
Wishing to be the friction in your jeans
    Isn't it messed up
How I'm just dying to be him?

This is sarcasm. She thinks she's all that and he'd do anything to be with her again.

    (Take aim at myself)
    (Take back what you said)

This war is both of our faults.

General Comment:Good to see I'm not the only one who thought of homosexuality when they read this. Especially since the lyrics in the booklet thing that comes with the CD is "wishing to be the friction in HIS jeans," I had to wonder what "we're always sleeping in, sleeping for the wrong team" meant.
