Songs are without an exact meaning thats meant for 1 thing, maybe VNV wrote them with their meanings, but left it open so people can feel their own things in it, thats the beauty of lyrics.

I have noticed that some White Power sites sell VNV Nation CDs.

While I do believe that no song has an exact interpretation. I feel that its talking about being an outsider. Someone who's been, banished, if you will from the rest of society, because they arent hiding they're feelings, or what they think. That, they wouldnt save them from what their self-inflicted prisons. And, that people hide everything that they dont want people to see behind material objects.

About the nazi/white power thing, I have a possible explanation.

A theme that continually runs through VNV Nation's lyrics is the idea of self, not just self, but self-determination and strength. Like something you might find in Nietzche's writing (who is also often mistaken for a nazi), VNV Nation's lyrics poetically describe the fear, the strentgh, the pain, and the beauty of being a free, strong soul uncontrolled by God or law, but only by the self's own will alone. This lovely idea, unfortunately, was perverted by the Nazis thanks to some purposefully oblique writing by Nieztche; he often used the word 'superman' (ubermench, I believe, though I coujld be mistaken) or 'overman' to describe a free individual; of course, the nazis perverted this idea into an individual who is free from moral constraints (we're still ok here; this is pretty much part and parcel of the idea of existential freedom) AND who doesn't have respect for his fellow humans, that is, to them, the 'overman' treats other humans as less than equals, and is within his rights to do so. I won't quibble over whether or not Nieztche said/believe that (I don't really care), but that is probably where this connection comes from; VNV Nation sing of strengh and will and freedom, but they also sing lovely songs about love, loneliness, and of course, the longing for the dvine - not exactly nazi propaganda, I'd say.

I thought this song was a bash on orginized religion telling how people use it to control you.

"embody promise in a sheen so pure" once again, promise of heaven or hapieness.

"the testament to your singular disease" being the desire for you to fit in, not be alone. (which goes with your guyses idea as well)

"against all wisdom you heed no warning
your desires giving you away" meaning you dont think of common sense, and blindly follow any promises of heaven or happieness they give, your desperation being your want to beleive in something or fit in.

i wouldn't save you from the path you wander" this one is tough, maybe hes saying live the way you want to live IE the path you follow, and not change yourself because somebody tells you your wrong.

"in desperation dreams any soul can set you free" basicly the same thing, desperation making you beleive the way people tell you to beleive, soul being faith settinng you free, IE when your despratw to beleive in something, anything you hear will make you feel releif.

in every breath, in every single motion" basicly saying beleiving the way people force you to beleive doesnt really make you happy, and your essence is screaming to beleive in your own path.

in portents of fate you foolishly place trust" conquest being success happieness fuffilment being turned into nothing by following their lies. this is the one that got me to beleive its religous, saying portent fate being what happens after you die, or how you live now even, and putting trust in a stranger in whats gonna happen or how you should live.

resort to shadows till your body expires" fear of going to hell, shadows being what they tell you to beleive, until you die.

and still you travel the road to hell" this one made me think its religous too, and what i got was heaven and hell being a metaphor for how you live, IE a living hell where you beleive what others tell you.

but I'm still talking and you're not listening" saying hes saying nothing, as in not telling you what to beleive in, but hes telling you your in pain but your not listening.

I see how it could be the way you guys say it is, and it does make sense that way. perhaps its a mix of the two? either way ive been thinking like that for awhile, being of no religion since i feel originized religion is very flawed and makes you peoples slaves,it was nice to see somebody actualy made a song about it.

One reason I like VNV nation so much is that their song lyrics are very 'visual' in a sense, but also broad enough in meaning that you have to interpret what they're saying. They don't just spell everything out for you.

To me this song feels like 'the consensus' as it were, the masses very possibly following a path of very physical greed and ambition, lies and deception, and nothing 'you' can say or do is going to change their mind or their path.
