Lyrics for Not About Love as interpreted by schmuun

Not About Love Lyrics
The early cars
Already are
Drawing deep breaths past my door
And last night's phrases
Sick with lack of basis
Are still writhing on my floor

And it doesn't seem fair
That your wicked words should work
In holding me down
And it doesn't seem right
To take information
Given at close range
For the gag
And the bind
And the ammunition round

Conversation once colored by esteem
Became dialogue as a diagram of a play for blood
Took a vacation, my palate got clean
Now I can taste your agenda
While you're spittting your cud

And it doesn't make sense
I should fall for the kingcraft
of a meritless crown
No, it doesn't seem right
To take information
Given at close range
For the gag
And the bind
And the ammunition round

This is not about love!
'Cause I am not in love
In fact I can't stop falling out

This is not about love!
'Cause I am not in love
In fact I can't stop falling out
I miss that stupid ache!

"What is this posture
I have to stare at?"
That's what he said when I was sittin' up straight!
Change the name of the game
'Cause he lost
He knew he was wrong but he knew it too late.
But I'm not being fair
'Cause I chose to listen to that filthy mouth
But I'd like to choose right,
Take all the things that I said that he stole,
Put 'em in a sack
Swing 'em over your shoulder
Turn on my heels
Step out of this sight
Try to live in a lovlier light

This is not about love!
'Cause I am not in love
In fact i cant stop falling out

This is not about love!
'Cause I am not in love
In fact i cant stop falling out
I miss that stupid ache...

I can't stop listening to this song. I love the lyrics, but...stupid head? I'm sure she means it in a different way than a kid would use as an insult, but still. Oh well, it's still a great song!

i know what you mean! i cant stop listening to this song. i love it so much. but i think with like "stupid head", like she kind of uses the topic of words as a sort of motif or recurring theme, you know? like "last night's phrases, sick with lack of bases" or "cause i chose to live life with a filthy mouth" or when she talks bout conversations. so maybe saying "stupid head" is the only way she can express it. maybe its purposefully simple because its the best way to just get across her point. its simple which is why kids use it? or i dunno im speculating. id love to get inside her head. god, this cd is amazing. they need to release it.

She's refering to herself with that comment, which I think is "ache". She's saying she misses falling in and being in love wholesale as she's got older and more jaded. The dizzy hieghts no longer come.

shes definitely saying "stupid head".. it's like.. a little kid type comment.. when you don't know what else to say and you're just like "Gosh you're such a..a....stupid head!"

I'd love it if it was "stupid ache" but I think it definitely sounds like "stupid ache", my favorite EM song.

I don't understand where people are getting "ache" and "ape" from.. I hear an incredibly distinct "h" and a pretty clear "d" at the end of what I believe to be is "head" x_X

i\'m not sure if fiona and paul thomas anderson broke up, but if they did, i\'m guess this song is about him. bitter break-upesque.

i think when she said "stupid head" she means her head being stupid. how her thoughts get all confused & don't make sense.

Having listened to it a fair few more times, I think the first one is "Head" the second one is "Ache". This would explain why we're hearing differing things.

I was about to agree with myself about my earlier comment as well, which would have looked brilliant! :)
Doh!

A few corrections on the lyrics.

She is definitely saying "ache". Turn up the speakers and listen closely. It's faint, but she definitely makes a "ck" sound.

"Sick with lack of basis"

"While he's spittin' his cud"
Cud is food regurgitated from the first stomach to the mouth of a ruminant and chewed again. Basically, he is repeating himself.

"Conversation once colored by esteem"

"I should fall for the kingcraft of a meritless crown"

"What is this posture I have to stare at"

"Cuz' I chose to listen to that filthy mouth"

I agree with the above comment... there is no doubt that she is saying "ache" not only because of the way it sounds, but because of the meaning of the song. In the chorus she is not talking about a person, therefore she would not use the adjective of "stupid head" she is talking about love its self. she is saying this is not about LOVE, and how she is not in LOVE and she can't stop falling out of love, therefore she would miss that stupid ache of love... it would simply be grammatically incorrect to switch the subject to a person from an adjective without defining it properly.

also.. in addition to what i just said earlier there are a few other mistakes.

it is "what is this posture i have to stare at" not "worst"

and "while your spittin your cud" not "while you spit in your cut"

"conversation once covered by esteem" not "steam"

"Cause I chose to listen to that filthy mouth" not "live life with a filthy mouth"

and lastly it's
"Take all the things that I've said that he stole
Put 'em in a sack
Swing 'em over my shoulder
Turn on my heels
Step out of this sight
Try to live in a lovelier life"
... not what's written above

Ya, when I first looked at these lyrics, I didn't think they were right. But now that people have corrected them, it makes more sense. I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!! My favorite on Extraordinary Macine. If anyone has seen the video, it's amazing. She livened up the song by putting Zach Galifianakis in the video with him singing the song. It's very good. All I have to say is THANK GOD FOR FIONA APPLE!!!!

I always thought it would be cute if the words were "I miss that stupid... hey". Like she was stopping herself from saying what she was going to say.

The video is very funny, especially because Zach Galifianakis looks like PT Anderson. And having said that, I think its "ape" becuase PT Anderson is pretty hairy.

In addition, a great song that shows Fiona hasnt lost a bit (I didnt mean that in a anorexic way, I meant that like as in her powerful talent.)

The piano punk sound was established by the Dresden Dolls, but Fiona makes it sound more hurting. I dig the way her voice wails during the chorus!
