You said I began
This messy state of love affair
And I drink too much and smoke too fast
And this city's cleared my innocence

Coffee is pouring out my ears
It's the only thing they have in here
And my heart stops beating

And when it stops it stops
My heart stopped beating
And when it stops it stops
My heart stopped beating

Number tree still on my plate
I heard the trains are running late
And I laugh out loud
My life is a mess
I have gone too far
In my lifelessness

Another coffee it's on the house
The poor girl look is on the owners spouse
And my heart stopped beating

And when it stops it stops
My heart stopped beating
And when it stops it stops
My heart stopped beating

Outside your house
To make a scene
In my head you grabbed me passionately
But the lights are out
And in an hour I walked on home
In the pouring shower
Lost my keys in front of me
My neighbor's smile he's handing me
The blackest coffee you will ever see

And my hearts stopped beating

And when it stops it stops
My heart stopped beating
And when it stops it stops
My heart stopped beating

General Comment:When I first heard this song, I couldn't believe how much I felt it related to me. I heard it while at work (when I was having a particularly bad day), and from the phrase "I drink too much and smoke too fast, that this city's clipped my innocence"...it just reminded me so much of myself. I don't have a lover in my life, but just the overall feeling that your life is in a terrible spot, and the one person that can make it right either isn't there, doesn't want anything to do with you, or only makes the problem worse... It totally just fit me. Drinking coffee to keep you awake even though you want to be done ("Coffee's pouring out my ears, it's the only thing they have in here"), feeling like your messing up on everything ("You say I'm to blame for this messy state of love affairs, that I drink too much and smoke too fast," "I laugh out loud, my life's a mess, I have gone too far in my lifeless"), the pitying stares and gestures of other people that--while you know are good-intentioned--do little to ease the suffering ("Another coffee, it's on the house, the 'poor-girl' look is on the owner's spouse," "My neighbor smiles, he's handing me, the blackest coffee you will ever see"), waiting so long for someone only to be disappointed ("Outside your house to make a scene, inside my head you grabbed me passionately, but the lights are out and in an hour, I walk on home in the pouring shower"), losing things so easily ("Lost my keys in front of me")... I've had so many of these days, so many of these thoughts, and it can be so difficult, so life-/hope-draining that, well, you feel like your heart DOES stop beating, as if a part of you dies, sometimes for only an instant, sometimes for the rest of your days.

General Comment:I liked the video! At first i thought it was weird, but it makes more sense to me now!
I feel like the girl..... who's mind is on a guy who seems to be showing up but then running away from me :/ "messy state of love affair...."

To me this song is about a situation where a guy & a girl seem to be interested in oneanother
but never quite find eachother! Everything goes wrong from the beginning. Maybe they are not sure, or don't know how to talk or show they like eachother!? It's bitter sweet ;)

It's cute when he tries to give her a rose. He likes her & is intrigued!
She seems like she's hesitant to accept him, but tries to reach out for it, then something persuades him to back away from her! Maybe there's something dark about him, or he doesnt know what he really wants!
I think that's why she says in the chorus " my heart stops beating"...she's sad he went away!
She's then frightened & starts to run away. Her heart get's broken & needs to be repaired.

I love the video scene where she is up in space standing on this little piece of reality, perhaps up in her thinking & dream world, trying to catch him! But she can't catch him, because he's running away! Maybe because he's in his own little world! & she doesnt understand that! In attempts to catch him she falls, but i think she falls back to reality since the doll falls back into her own hands. She looks sad & puts the doll back up.

Seems to me that this whole song is more about her fixation on a man who has done very little to win her heart! It's more like he's playing games. Because he never actually gives her the rose or Gives her his heart!
He "tries" to Give her a rose then runs away. He appears later in the video only to turn away again. It seems that maybe some force or somthing is keeping him from reaching her. & she is stuck on him & maybe sees somthing good about him although he doesnt appear to be & everything that surrrounds them is making things bad. hmmm...i just thought of the Beauty & the Beast story!

    " I laugh out loud
    My life is a mess
    I have gone too far
    In my lifelessness"".....

    "Outside your house
    To make a scene
In my head you grabbed me passionately
    But the lights are out
And in an hour I walked on home...."

in my opinion this could be the thinking of the guy or girl!
They both were captured by eachother in the beginning.
When one tries to approach, the others not there or available.
She spends her time thinking about the way things happened or didn't happen & is sad.

I just don't understand the ending of the video, where its'reavealed that she was dressed as the "death"
costume. She's holding the doll of the guy! Does that mean maybe in some way she was driving him away??
can anyone elaborate on the ending????

General Comment:I got this feeling that she's going to fall in love with the neighbor who's handing her the coffee, though I can't really explain why

General Comment:Well, I see it as about a lover who has died. The first verse has her remembering things he said to her, but it seems that others are noticing her think about it. She is sitting and drinking coffee, thinking, but also just sitting and existing (some of you know what I mean). It seems apparent that others know of her sadness, as indicated by the coffee on the house, and the neighbor later. She even visits his house, but of course there is no hope in that. Even still, she stands there for an hour. The only thing I am not sure of is "lost my keys in front o me." I am guessing that she means was about to use her keys at the door of her place, but then got lost in thought or sadness. The neighbor is being supportive, but she feels dead again (my heart stops beating), knowing what is gone.

General Comment:It's mainly about this messy relationship that she was in with a guy. The coffee symbolizes her relationship with him. Since coffee boosts a heart rate, it's kind of like how all her emotions were kind of on steroids with the guy. Then when the relationship ended it felt like her heart stopped beating because everything in life didn't affect her as much compared with the feelings she had with this guy. She's lifeless now, numb kind of, her heart has stopped working, because no emotion compares with the emotions she felt with the guy. Like perhaps she felt extreme happiness and extreme depression with him, so now even if something is supposed to make her happy or depressed she doesn't really feel it.

As a result of being bitchslapped by life because of this boy she has resorted to drinking and smoking and basically city life. She goes back to him perhaps sometimes but only to make a fool of herself, and whenever someone like a neighbor tries to get through to her, no matter if if their coffee is even blacker than the ex-guy's it makes no difference to her.

General Comment:Isn't it weird how she constantly talks of coffee and heart stops beating? I mean, caffeine makes your heart palpitate doesn't it? Maybe this song is about an irony..

I agree a bit with a commentor that this song is about wanting out on life. I think this song has something to do with not knowing what you want and realizing your life is not what you really want.

    General Comment:"You said I began
This messy state of love affair"

I don't think it's referring to love/relationship per se. I think it's talking about a person's immersion and we might say obsession, with things that are unimportant and without direction. She is so unfocused that she considers her life's a mess.

Her predicament could include a directionless relationship, an obscure lover, aimless career, basically she's just so confused about everything else in her life. She drowns herself in temporary trappings like caffeine, alcohol, smoking, city life.

The interesting thing is that it's like she's finally aware of what she's doing and she wants out. She just have to figure out what to do and put direction back into her life.

    "Outside your house
    To make a scene
In my head you grabbed me passionately
    But the lights are out
And in an hour I walked on home
    In the pouring shower
Lost my keys in front of me
My neighbor's smile, he's handing me
The blackest coffee you will ever see
    And my heart stopped beating"

It's a daily struggle, she thinks she kind of knows what to do next but daydreaming comes in the way. Then she tries to get back on track and she loses focus again, like when she said she lost her keys in front of her, and then another distraction is offered in front of her, communicated through her saying that the neighbor offered her the blackest coffee one can ever see.

When her heart stops beating I think it means she loses her zest in life, her focus, and can't seem to recall what she is passionate about. And in that lull she immerses herself.

But then again, let us not forget of the silver lining. That she's finally aware and hopefully she would want to get out. It's the "how to" part that's always hard.
