bring back those good ol' days
nothing feels right
nothing ever goes my way
I threw my future away
now I walk alone
out here in the cold
wandering astray
where is my future?
I'm gonna need a home
you'd expect the same
now wouldn't you?
wouldn't you?
your journey back to birth is haunting you
haunting you
your departure from the earth is haunting you
haunting you
only those who accept
will find that acceptance in return
we have been trimmed down like hedges
and told just to sit
and wilt
and spit at each other from a distance
there is constant resistance from you
I'm gonna need a home
you'd expect the same
now wouldn't you?
wouldn't you?
it's been 10 years strong
that's much too long
it's time to do something good for my health
it's time to do something good for myself
I've wasted all of this time
nothing feels right
nothing ever goes my way
I threw my future away
now I walk alone
out here in the cold
wandering astray
where is my future?
I'm gonna need a home
you'd expect the same
now wouldn't you?
wouldn't you?
your journey back to birth is haunting you
haunting you
your departure from the earth is haunting you
haunting you
only those who accept
will find that acceptance in return
we have been trimmed down like hedges
and told just to sit
and wilt
and spit at each other from a distance
there is constant resistance from you
I'm gonna need a home
you'd expect the same
now wouldn't you?
wouldn't you?
it's been 10 years strong
that's much too long
it's time to do something good for my health
it's time to do something good for myself
I've wasted all of this time

bring back those good ol' days
nothing feels right
nothing ever goes my way
I threw my future away
now I walk alone
out here in the cold
wandering astray
where is my future? (This first verse is about Self Pity and being cynical and what happens if you wallow in it for too long.)
I'm gonna need a home
you'd expect the same
now wouldn't you?
wouldn't you?(This is what inevitably what everyone needs at bare minimum, Home is where the heart is.)
your journey back to birth is haunting you
haunting you(An option is to go back to the beginning and start over)
your departure from the earth is haunting you
haunting you (An option is to end your life here on earth)
only those who accept
will find that acceptance in return
we have been trimmed down like hedges
and told just to sit
and wilt
and spit at each other from a distance
there is constant resistance from you ( This is about Mainstream Culture, Conformity, control, and Resistance.)
I'm gonna need a home
you'd expect the same
now wouldn't you?
wouldn't you?
it's been 10 years strong
that's much too long
it's time to do something good for my health
it's time to do something good for myself
I've wasted all of this time
(So to sum things up it comes off to me as being a Coming of age song, Bug Eyes(Big and Wide open) is a funny way of the shock of stepping out and seeing the world for the first time. The rest of the song is the journey about discovering the good and bad about yourself, the good and bad about society, Finding your place in the world, The Choices along the way and how time flies and in the end you end up realizing that at a minimum you at least need a healthy Mind, body, spirit and a home. This is a great album from Dredg and I can Imagine that it was real popular with people between the ages of 18 to 30 for they could relate and also for those that are older that can remember what it was like going through those years of your life.
I believe the artist is searching his past, looking for an explanation as to where and why life did not meet perceived expectations. The artist also expresses a sense that a future without accomplishment will lead to a life without purpose. Life becomes meaningless. Solace cannot be found even in death; he is not suicidal. Haunted by the past, and fearful of the future he sees, the artist searches for a way to enhance his circumstances and better his life.
He feels betrayed by the greater societal institutions and social norms driven by self-interest. Stratified classes of individuals compete for scarce resources. They merely squabble and spit at each other; within this paradigm, no one wins; we all die alone, alienated and fearful.
His determination lives on, he feels there is another way. He should have started long ago.
bring back those good ol' days

I threw my future away
now I walk alone
out here in the cold
wandering astray
where is my future?
(This set of lyrics makes me think maybe he had a relationship with God at some point, but left it behind so to speak. Now he feels kind of lost and uncertain and alone.)
I'm gonna need a home
you'd expect the same
now wouldn't you?
wouldn't you?
(this is his inner voice speaking to him. when he says "home" he means a destiny like heaven)
your journey back to birth is haunting you
haunting you
your departure from the earth is haunting you
haunting you
(regretting his time without god, and his eventual death is haunting him bc he is afraid of going to hell)
only those who accept
will find that acceptance in return
we have been trimmed down like hedges
and told just to sit
and wilt
and spit at each other from a distance
there is constant resistance from you
(this is what really makes me think it is religious. the "only those who accept" lyric makes me think only those wjho accept God in there life will get accepted by him into heaven in return)
I'm gonna need a home
you'd expect the same
now wouldn't you?
wouldn't you?
(see what i stated a couple paragraphs ago)
it's been 10 years strong
that's much too long
it's time to do something good for my health
it's time to do something good for myself
I've wasted all of this time
(wasted all this time without god in his life, now he needs to do something about.)
That is just my take on it. What say you?
"Journey back to birth" is a really awesome way of describing how people often look back on their lives... ultimately where we are today is the result of a series of choices that led to a path of outcomes and further choices to make... Sometimes the natural question to ask yourself is "how did I end up here" and I think Dredg was really able to capture those feelings you experience when looking back on your life, the endless questions and "What if's" really can be "haunting", and even more so when you begin to consider how the rest of your life will pan out if you keep moving through life and making similar choices at the same rate: hence "Your departure from the earth is haunting you".
Bug Eyes really is all about the epiphany... the "freaking out" you experience when you suddenly realize you're not where you want to be in life, when you're caught in the crossroads between a difficult (perhaps regretful) Past- and an uncertain and quickly-approaching Future. At the same time, reflecting on the very existentialism that may have discouraged one from "settling down" or "falling in line" with society... Is there a way to really live without being "trimmed down like hedges and told just to sit and wilt"? There seems to be a compromise here between getting your life together and still being able to feel "alive".
"Many of us wish we could go back. Back before things were difficult, before our mistakes became 'direction changing' mistakes, and when innocence was more than an 'idea'- it was who we were. We all lose our innocence along the way in life, and we, in turn, lose ourselves. The monotonous routine of our daily life is killing us. We get lost within the chaotic distractions of an ever-chaotic world full of rules and regulations. Inside us is an ancient fire burning, wanting to burst before it's too late. We're given an average of 70 years on this earth and the day we die is always lingering in our mind.
i assure you.
My friend turned me onto this band, and this song reminds me of her, which is why I interpret the song that way.
