Please, remember me happily
By the rosebush laughing
With bruises on my chin, the time when
We counted every black car passing
Your house beneath the hill
And up until someone caught us in the kitchen
With maps, a mountain range, a piggy bank
A vision too removed to mention

But please, remember me fondly
I heard from someone you're still pretty
And then they went on to say
That the pearly gates
Had some eloquent graffiti
Like "We'll meet again" and "Fuck the man"
And "Tell my mother not to worry"
And angels with their great handshakes
Were always done in such a hurry

And please, remember me that Halloween
Making fools of all the neighbors
Our faces painted white
By midnight, we'd forgotten one another
And when the morning came I was ashamed
Only now it seems so silly
That season left the world and then returned
And now you're lit up by the city

So please, remember me mistakenly
In the window of the tallest tower
Calling passers-by but much too high
To see the empty road at happy hour
Gleam and resonate, just like the gates
Around the holy kingdom
With words like "Lost and found" and "Don't look down"
And "Someone save temptation"

And please, remember me as in the dream
We had as rug-burned babies
Among the fallen trees and fast asleep
Aside the lions and the ladies
That called you what you like and even might
Give a gift for your behavior
A fleeting chance to see a trapeze
Swinger high as any savior

But please, remember me, my misery
And how it lost me all I wanted
Those dogs that love the rain and chasing trains
The colored birds above their running
In circles around the well and where it spells
On the wall behind St. Peter
So bright, on cinder gray, in spray paint
"Who the hell can see forever?"

And please, remember me seldomly
In the car behind the carnival
My hand between your knees, you turned from me
And said, "The trapeze act was wonderful
But never meant to last", the clown that passed
Saw me just come up with anger
When it filled with circus dogs, the parking lot
Had an element of danger

So please, remember me finally
And all my uphill clawing
My dear, but if I make the pearly gates
I'll do my best to make a drawing
Of God and Lucifer, a boy and girl
An angel kissing on a sinner
A monkey and a man, a marching band
All around a frightened trapeze swinger

My Interpretation:I think that like usual people are looking way too deeply into an artists lyrics.

To me, The Trapeze Swinger seems very clearly about a girl from start to finish. Someone that the song's narrator (the artist?) cared about very deeply and was probably in love with as a teenager or young adult. It appears the relationship hit its crescendo at the day of the carnival, where some details are obviously being left out. There was either an argument, or the guy was trying to be too physical with the girl in the car, hence all of his shame and guilt throughout the song. I do not think the parts about death are literal, merely him reflecting on religion due to symbols he's seeing around town and how this girl is haunting him until death.

    My two cents.

General Comment:Despite reading through a few pages of short and also verbose comments and/or interpretations, the best and, in my opinion, probably most accurate portion of anything I read was, "This song is felt rather than heard."

    Thank you for reading.

Song Meaning:what hes saying is that he loved a girl who died and " the parking lot had an element of danger" hes saying she died in a car accedent after they both whent to some sort entertaing place, before that she says the trapeze act was wonderfull beacuse they were both opposits he was a rough kind of kid and she was a good person thats why in the begging he says with bruses on my chin and at the end he has all the comparisons of good and evil hes the sinner and shes the angel kissing on him and hes and a monkey and a man beacuse she was the one who was more understaning and had the bigger picture of life down but they both had adventures together ( as you can tell from his memories of her) and he continues to say all around a frightened trapez swinger beacuse there whole relationship was the balence between two opposites that gave birth to so much life and spontaniousness but just to clarify the relation ship it self isnt symbolized by the trapeze swinger rather its the two seperate people and he says frightened trapeze swinger beacuse thats him whos frightend the painting is a memuar of his life with herand when the girl says the trapeze act was wonderfull shes saying that our opposites creating this love that we shared was a wonderfull and the trapeze act it self is the relationship but she continues to say it was never ment to last and the clowns watching as he got up angrily are bi standers and the dogs were other cars that are responsible for her death but this is the big twist if your still with me when he says remeber me with all my uphill clawing hes saying that the whole relation ship he tried and he want her to remeber that he tried to save her at the end and wanted to witch phscologicaly diging into you can see he blames him self for her dying and i want to point out when he says a trapeze swinger as high as any savior hes saying hes talking about her and what a good soul/person she was and all those messeges writen in the perly gates(a.k.a heavan) are not from people going to hell but people going to heavan theve been accepted into heaven the hint to that is the messege saying " tell my mother not to worry" thats the only representations and symbolizms i can remeber right now any questions feel free to ask the over all messege is cherish love and its better to remeber than to forget and love each person like its there last day beacuse youll never know when theyll be gone and all youll have are the memeories you shared with them.

General Comment:As a student of literature the first thing we're taught about poetry is that the structure has just as much or more importance than the actual content of the poem. I think the principle applies less to music but can be employed to great effect. I first noticed the structure of this song when thinking about the fact that none of these verses have musical resolutions. There is no chorus or bridge, simply the same musical verse. The same tune repeats over and over, making it in essence a song that could go on forever. I wondered about what it might mean when I remembered the title of the track, The Trapeze Swinger. I think the musical structure of the song, of the same musical lines repeating with very little variation is meant to musically invoke the image of a trapeze swinger, endlessly swinging. The motif of carnival folk and trapeze artists is scattered through the narrative of the song but it is all held together by the to and fro of the music, giving the song a strong narrative backbone through music. Just a thought I had, but Beam has proven himself a musical genius before so I don't doubt it could be intentional.

My Interpretation:I think he is talking about different girls he has come across in his life, with each repetition of the verse. I could be wrong, but that's how I have always seen it as. Some it sounds like he is talking about having sexual relations with, and not remembering them or feeling ashamed later. And some sounds way more personal and deep. It's like he is saying is farewell to all those past memories with different relationships, both sexual and deeper.

This never fails to make me cry. The way he phrases it just makes my heart drop, and I want to curl up in a ball and think about the people who matter most.
