Innocence for pride, crush the end within my stride
Said I'm strong now I know that I'm a leader
I love the sound of you walking away, you walking away
Mascara bleeds a blackened tear
Oh, and I am cold, yes I'm cold, but not as cold as you are
I love the sound of you walking away, you walking away
I love the sound of you walking away, walking away, hey, hey

Why don't you walk away? Why don't you walk away?
Why don't you walk away? No buildings will fall down
Why don't you walk away? No quake will split the ground
Why don't you walk away? The sun won't swallow the sky
Why don't you walk away? Statues will not cry
Why don't you walk away? Why don't you walk away?
Why don't you walk away?
Why don't you walk away?

I cannot turn to see those eyes, as apologies may rise
I must be strong and stay an unbeliever
And love the sound of you walking away, you walking away
Mascara bleeds into my eye
Oh, and I'm not cold, I am old, at least as old as you are

And as you walk away, oh as you walk away
And as you walk away, my headstone crumbles down
As you walk away, the Hollywood winds will howl
As you walk away, the Kremlins falling
Oh, as you walk away, Radio 4 is static
As you walk away, oh, as you walk away
Oh, as you walk away, oh, as you walk away, hey

The stab of stilettos
On a silent night
Stalin smiles and Hitler laughs
Churchill claps Mao Tse-Tung on the back

General Comment:Why do some people connect every song there is out there to the illuminati, 9/11 and whatnot?

To me this song is just about a relationship that is ending. They've probably been together for a while and he's so tired of her and what they have and when they spend time and she leaves he feels relief.

"I cannot turn to see those eyes, as apologies may rise
I must be strong and stay an unbeliever"

They probably have a fight and he wants to end it and not even look at her as he fears he may become weak and say "sorry" and keep this dead-end relationship going.

"And as you walk away, oh as you walk away
And as you walk away, my headstone crumbles down
As you walk away, the Hollywood winds will howl
As you walk away, the Kremlins falling
Oh, as you walk away, Radio 4 is static
As you walk away, oh, as you walk away
Oh, as you walk away, oh, as you walk away, hey"

They actually break up and she leaves. And even though he thought that this would be easy, it now feels like the world is ending inside of him.

    "The stab of stilettos
    On a silent night
    Stalin smiles and Hitler laughs
Churchill claps Mao Tse-Tung on the back"

But in the end it seems like he's better off now and actually feels happy again.

General Comment:The singer of this song is referring to the relationship between him and his partner. It can be seen that in the first half of the song the singer is renouncing his feelings to the partner in question. This can be derived from how he depicts his feelings in regards to his partner as cold and later confirms this by suggesting how little a negative impact the demise of their relationship would have. Yet it can later be seen that this is not the case. In the second half of the song despite the singer originally wanting his partner to leave him in the first half when the relationship is actually ending it causes him much distress. Therefor it can be said that this song is about the singer wanting his partner walk out but is afraid and hurt by the prospect at the same time.

I have to agree that there is no obvious connection between the song's lyrics and September 11 attacks. Buildings, ground, etc are used as symbols, in my opinion.

General Comment:Personally, I doubt it's about 9.11. Not because Franz Ferdinand isn't American (Which by the way is completely true, they're Scottish), or because no one outside America cares about that tragedy (Which isn't true, I'm Australian and and trust me, we felt it too), but simply because Franz Ferdinand tend to write songs on more trivial topics than this. It's not in their nature to write a cryptic song about terrorism. Not saying they couldn't, but I doubt that's what this is. There are some parts to it which are very confusing and don't seem to make sense in the genre of love songs, and some reference to political leaders and such, but that doesn't mean it's a song about war. I truly believe it's a love song, not just because that's how I interpret the lyrics but because the other theories seem flimsy.

And for god sake people, I'm fourteen and I know more about 9.11 than most of you. If you're going to be writing about something, at least know what you're talking about.

General Comment:i really don't think it can be any more obvious..this song is about breaking up...they both want to oh and this song is just real..

'Why don't you walk away? No buildings will fall down
Why don't you walk away? No quake will split the ground
Why don't you walk away? The sun won't swallow the sky
Why don't you walk away? Statues will not cry'

it's true none of this happens...it just feels like the world ends...and with every break up people get a little more cynical, cold, and heartless...that's what i think at least

people lose hope in everything after a break up and nothing matters

And as you walk away, my headstone crumbles down
As you walk away, the Hollywood winds will howl
As you walk away, the Kremlin's falling
Oh, as you walk away, Radio 4 is static

then after they care again and realize that the world kept on going while they were thinking of nothing

    'The stab of stilettos
    On a silent night
    Stalin smiles and Hitler laughs
Churchill claps Mao Tse-Tung on the back'

it's going to hurt like the world is ending but that's normal with any break up so the world isn't going to end...and in the end it's going to be the better course of action...but then in the once it happens it's still the end of the world...

General Comment:To me, this song is most certainly about Domestic abuse, He doesent actualy want to see his wife go away, that would ruin his Reputation and Pride, (Or "Headstone") And so hes saying "I love the sound of you walking away" in order to make her feel as if he is in complete control and that there is nothing she can do to harm him.

    General Comment:Wikipedia:
During the Exit festival in Novi Sad, Serbia on 6th of July 2006 Alexander Kapranos explained that the song was dedicated to Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian-Bosnian assassin who shot the Archduke Franz Ferdinand. He said: "Serbians! There's one Serbian who's particularly dear to us. His name is Gavrilo Princip. This song is dedicated to him!".
