What kind of comedy is this all of the danger you've discovered
What kind of comedy is this how can you say now you're frightened
You labeled me in forty tries and in case you didn't realize
I was a landscape in your dream and all my mountains were on fire
What kind of labyrynth is this that we're constructing through talking
What kind of labyrynth is this that sends you laughing without smiling
Age brings a sad little surprise and in case you didn't realize
While you were calculating tears my head expired
What kind of comedy is this how can you say now you're frightened
You labeled me in forty tries and in case you didn't realize
I was a landscape in your dream and all my mountains were on fire
What kind of labyrynth is this that we're constructing through talking
What kind of labyrynth is this that sends you laughing without smiling
Age brings a sad little surprise and in case you didn't realize
While you were calculating tears my head expired

The landcape in her dream... being her "idea" & him having "mountains on fire," is like his desire to to be able to fulfill her standards... which are causing him emotional turmoil... (i.e.- "My head expired."), because he's unable to.
He's tired of wasting his time... "age brings a sad little surprise." And she's in her own world calculating mentally what's not being fulfilled by him.
"I was a landscape in your dream
And all my mountains were on fire"
They way that line is delivered gives me this sense of passion, especially when I hear, "all my mountains were on fire". The speaker wants to be 'seen' by their lover and they could have something beautiful, if only the speaker's partner weren't so assumptive and/or precautious ("How can you say now you're frightened? You labeled me in forty tries").
The partner misinterpruts the speaker for who he truly is. And as their relationship continues on in this way, it becomes more confusing and complicated, "What kind of labyrinth is this that we're constructing through talking?". They can't communicate eachother without arguing/misunderstanding. And in the lines to follow it's easy to see that the relationship loses it's joy.
"And in case you didn't realize
While you were calculating tears
My head expired"
To me, this is saying, "While you were busy worrying about everything that was wrong with me instead of simply enjoying the perks of what we had together, my heart broke." and definatley the line, "And in case you didn't realize" emphasizes the fact that the speaker's partner is oblivious to them.
Sad song.
i think this is about the urge to control, and its varying degrees of expression in different people. regardless of the degree that they're aware of it, people are always trying to alter the way that they are perceived through less-than-genuine behavior. who here hasn't laughed when someone told a bad joke, in order to not seem rude or uncool? laughing without really enjoying the positive emotions that go with it?
the image of a labyrinth reminds me of this complex maze of fabricated human culture that we all force ourselves and each other to navigate. laugh at that unfunny joke, and you're stuck having to remember to laugh at it every time its retold. it gets hard keeping track of all that shit that piles up, like a labyrinth.
His head, or his own little dream, is expiring as he realizes he's nothing more than the physical embodiment of someone else's dream. This person is in love with the idea of love and misses out on the idea of relationships involving 2 people. She wants a landscape, something she can control, a solid/constant. Quick to label, calculate, categorize. Things that don't involve a 2nd party's feeling.
I think in the beginning it seemed exciting, only reality is much less interesting, and now "she" is getting kind of weirded out by him where as "he" is beginning to realize that "she's" kind of cold.
Either way, I think it's about disappointment.
"What kind of comedy is this?
How can you say now you're frightened?"
I think is meant in almost disbelief.
"You labelled me in forty tries"
adds to what i was saying above about paranoia
Ok, ok I'm done.
Verbal diarrhea!
First -
How during the progress of a relationship, you can "discover danger" or realize parts of a person that you feel you can't handle, have been hurt by or fear you will be hurt by in the future.
How some people can become so consumed with paranoia and worry over a relationship (especially if there has been betrayal previously in the relationship) that they can't sort of "see the forest for the trees" or (this might be a stretch) but see the "landscape" and what this paranoia is doing to the relationship ("and all my mountains were on fire").
Second -
Dicussing fears -whether irrational or not- about a relationship tends to go in circles (the "labyrinth"). There is no alleviating someone's paranoia, they have to do so on their own by learning to trust.
"Laughing without smiling" reminds me of... Ok. You know when you tell someone something and they don't believe you, so they laugh? Kind of.. scoff?
As you grow older, you realize a few things about life and your past relationships ("Age brings a sad little surprise"). While involved in a relationship, you can often become so focused on your own feelings ("calculating tears") that you don't realize the feelings of the person that you love ("my head expired").
Anyway. Sorry, that's kind of a lazy version of what I wanted to say. This is a great song. The remix on the Satantic Twins vinyl is awesome!
Anyway, too bad there are no real comments on this one; it's one of my favorites. Ergo, I'm adding my own thoughts.
I think it's about people who worry too much--about the million dangers in the world, about getting calculations and catagories just right, about filling every silent moment with words, and about aging. Meanwhile he or she dreams of the speaker being in danger because the speaker lives a normal, natural life. And inevitably the speaker dies while the other continues to live in fear.
Point: Why bother living if instead of enjoying it while it lasts, you fill up every moment with meaningless tasks to prolong the inevitable?
