I think it's fairly plain: people in a position of high economic status tend to view the cause of assisting the poor as some kind of holy "charity" work than a fulfillment of a real responsibility. The voice of the song is having a kind of epiphany wherein it realizes that the rich in countries like the US are actually FAILING when they pay little taxes and don't assist the poor.
Interesting, yet there is no "real responsibility" to assist others. There is government mandate and Christian (and other religious) teachings about helping those less fortune. Unless one is religious, s/he has absolutely NO moral responsibility to take care of anyone but her/himself. (Selfish, huh? Atheism and secular humanism do not teach or organize giving because in their philosophies the self is center and they answer to no one). The rich pay more in taxes than the poor or middle class, but would pay even more if we were a bright enough country to implement the Fair Tax (consumption tax). Government mandate in the U.S. has us paying higher taxes each and every year, and those who don't pay into the system receive taxpayer money in the form of rent; food; tuition; job training; etc. Sorry, but I couldn't let your post slide and I don't believe the song has anything to do with socioeconomic status. (BTW, the middle class gives me to charity through churches than by any other means...and it gives more than any other economic group.)
