I guess not too many people have commented on this song since there's no lyrics, but... i must say that this song is pretty brilliant, and quite a treat to listen to.
I actually heard that some car dealers use "Dark Side of the Moon" to show potential customers how the car's speakers sound, and i can imagine that this song would make a pretty good "test song". I can't think of any other song that sounds like this... pretty crazy stuff

Tenuous connection here but; this sounds a lot like the incidental music from Dawn Of The Dead by Dario Argento. Dawn Of The Dead is a film about consumerism and humans portrayed as zombies who just want to shop, shop, shop. And here, the title of this song 'Any colour you like' is a consumerist reference, about availability; what you can buy and in what colour.

Im pretty sure that the main reason this song (and whole album) was created is so that people can listen to it while tripping out on pretty much any drug out there. if you smoke about 2(or more) grams of ganja, put on this song, shut off all the lights, lie on your back, and close your eyes, you\'ll know what i mean. When i do this, i feel like im slowly spiraling downward in my back into peaceful darkness and the keyboard sound is creating all these vibrant yellow streaks all around me, and i have no cares in the world and i feel so peaceful. Try it for yourself, it is a very beautiful experiance. This song could not be improved in any way.

This song is a great experience on acid. I saw vibrant colors-the song, itself, just sort of "sounds" colorful (but I do have mild synesthesia)-but it's still a good trip song, as is the whole album.
The song is about colors-that's all. It's supposed to make you think colors and trippy shit.

if you think the album, or this song in particular was made to make people's "trips" better, you should try listening to the lyrics, if you can get your head around all the big words. This whole album is obviousley a hell of a lot better than a little flashing-colored trip.

I really like the connection Publius made with Dawn of the Dead (minor correction- Goblin composed the music). I think the song is about experimentation. Some people may think this is about experimenting with drugs, but I think it is about experimenting with technology. Some of the devices used on DSOTM were never heard before, and ACYL is a great example of this.

I agree with chiron090. This song is about how you have an illusion of several options though your choice has already been made. The variation in the guitar says it all. Easily one of the most amazing instrumentals of all time!

I hate how people refer instrumental songs(other than classical) to 'trippy drug' songs. You have got to be kidding me. If you watched any documentaries of the band, they never once said "H*ll yeah, man, we made this sweet cd for drug addicts." They actually have explained the meaning to each of their songs, even the instrumental ones. You have to be sober to fully understand the meaning, children.
Just the random sounds, title names, and beats to the whole DSOTM album explain alot. When I was in high school, our teacher made us analyze the meanings of the songs, and I understood it much better. The album is basically about growing up, enjoying life before you die, and even though you know you are going to die, and you have faced several hardships already, you've got to lighten up in order to truly enjoy your years on earth.
Grow up kids. This song and album wasn't meant to be bashed by immature people. By the way, drugs kill.

If you want to really experience this song, play it at maximum volume on a really good stereo system. Or get it on SACD and play it on a 700 watt system. you will probablly experience mind alterations without drugs.

The band\'s roadie, Chris Adams, used to use the phrase taken from the Ford Motor Company:
You can have it in any color you want as long as it is black!
Chris used to let the band members know that they had to make do with what they have when he couldn\'t or he didn\'t want to do what they asked of him. Chris\' response was:
You can have it in any colour you like.
The boys added it to Dark Side when it was under production, because they thought the album should have a track reminiscent of one of their jam sessions.

ChillyKitten i dont know who you were refering to when you said that people always refer to instrumental songs as trippy drug songs... or who you where thinking that floyd made darkside for "trips" and stoners, i personally dont think any of them did any thing but bud(with the exception of barret, and of course im sure they have all tried other drugs once or so), which i have seen roger waters somkin a fatty in a picture, and in Live at Pompi it also looks like he is smokin a dobbie. Also who are you calling Children?! and who is bashing this album?!?! Music my friend, is not all about what the artist is trying to telling you! its about what YOU perceive. And all drugs dont kill, if you could tell me who has died from pot i would be fascinated and would thank you for opening my eyes to that. and dont tell me its a gateway drug i dont give a fuck.
ok sorry for that, what im trying to say is that, when you smoke pot. you get this... to quote floyd... i get amazing powers of observation.... which of course you and other stoners can only share that feeling, but when i listen to darkside, stoned, I relize things, things i might have missed or just not fully comprehended but then i do, and i get this feeling like im one step closer to figureing out what that particular album means to me. Also with Hendrix, if you guys listen to 1983...(A Merman i should turn to be)... which then flows into Moon, Turn the Tides... Gently gently away.. then into...Still raining still dreaming.. i just cant explain the euphoric feeling that wash's over you.. Darkside wasnt made for stoners... but it sounds so much better stoned..

actually, i think this song is about drugs. no joke. dark side of the moon is about all the different things in life that can drive you crazy (money, time, war, etc.) and drugs can do that as well. i dont think its a coincidence that the next song is titled brain damage.

The entire album is about the pressures of everyday life driving you crazy. Note its position on the album, too. "Us and Them" is about paranoia, immediately following this is "Any Colour You Like" and then "Brain Damage", finally the Eclipse. Any Colour IS the nervous breakdown that comes in between the onset of paranoia and the "brain damage." It's cool to listen to when you're on acid, but that's not what it's for. It represents something, just like every song the Floyd ever wrote.

I agree with ChillyKitten in that I can listen to the songs and appreciate them without drugs, I think i'm a better listener if i know how to appreciate songs without taking anything

Actually Roger did Psychadelics a few times, I think 3 to be exact. Rick was bigger into drugs than the others and would often experiment with Syd. So it was Rick and Syd, and then Roger and Nick would often drink (not excessively or anything). David smoked weed but I don't know what else he did. Haha in the Live at Pompeii, during Mademoissle Nobs (Seamus) look at David's eyes...There red as shit...anywho Rick started doing cocaine later in the 70's and that was one of the reasons Roger booted him. Now I don't like it how any sort of different/mildly avant-garde band is deemed a drug centered band, it is more often than not the case. It really is much better to listen to Dark Side of the Moon under the influence; The Floyd are famous for creating (In there early years at least) a wall of sound. Their instruments blend like an orchestra its amazing... When u are stoned however you can single out any instrument and notice backround sounds you would have never noticed before.
Anyways this song is AMAZING, one of my favorite on DSOTM. I think a lot of us kids who listen to Dark Side today, just skip over this track along with Great Gig and On the Run, because its instrumental...that is doing a disjustice to themselves. A lot of Pink Floyd's instrumentals are amazing..like most of Ummagumma, the title track from More, a few from Obscured by Clouds, One of these Days and so on...The Pink Floyd started out as a jam band. Just take a look at early jams like Interstellar Overdrive or Nick's Boogie. Theres a great bootlegged jam called Sunshine, I do believe it was during Syd's era...hard to tell though cause of no singing (I found it on Winmx) a while ago.

JuliaDreamer, I'm one of these young people or whatever you're talking about. I usually do skip On the Run nowadays if I can but never Great Gig and Any Colour. This song is actually one of my favorites on the album, the way it comes in after Us and Them and everything too.. I love Pink Floyd's longer drawn out instrumental stuff and all that. Fricken' awesome stuff I gots from them that I dl'd... There's a lot of good bootlegs and stuff out there.
