Lyrics for I Must Belong Somewhere as interpreted by apocalypse84

I Must Belong Somewhere Lyrics
Leave the bright blue door on the whitewashed wall
Leave the death ledger under city hall
Leave the joyful air in that rubber ball today

Leave the lilac print on the linen sheet
Leave the birds you killed at your father's feet
Let the sideways rain and the crooked street remain

Leave the whimpering dog in his cold kennel
Leave the dead star lit on her pedestal
Leave the acid kids in their green fishbowls today

Just leave the sad guitar in its hard-shelled case
Leave the worried look on your lover's face
Let the orange embers in the fireplace remain

Because everything, it must belong somewhere
A train off in the distance, bicycle chained to the stairs
Everything, it must belong somewhere
I know that now, that's why I'm staying here

Leave the ocean's roar in the turquoise shell
Leave the widower in his private hell
Leave the liberty in that broken bell today

Leave the epic poem on its yellow page
Leave the gray macaw in his covered cage
Let the traveling band on the interstate remain

Because everything, it must belong somewhere
Soundstage in California, televisions in Times Square
Everything, it must belong somewhere
I know that now, that's why I'm staying here

Leave the secret talks on the trundle bed
Leave the garden tools in the rusted shed
Leave those bad ideas in your troubled head today

Leave the restless ghost in his old hotel
Leave the homeless man in his cardboard cell
Let the painted horse on the carousel remain

Because everything, it must belong somewhere
Just like the gold around her finger or the silver in his hair
Everything, it must belong somewhere
I know that now, that's why I'm staying here

In truth, the forest hears each sound
Each blade of grass as it lies down
The world requires no audience
No witnesses, no witnesses

Leave the old town drunk on his wooden stool
Leave the autumn leaves in the swimming pool
Leave the poor black child in his crumbling school today

Leave the novelist in his daydream tune
Leave the scientist in his Rubik's Cube
Let the true genius in the padded room remain

Leave the horse's hair on the slanted bow
Leave the slot machines on the river boat
Leave the cauliflower in the casserole today

Leave the hot, bright trash in the shopping malls
Leave the hawks of war in their capitol
Let the organ's moan in the cathedral remain

Because everything, it must belong somewhere
They locked the devil in the basement, threw God up into the air
Everything, it must belong somewhere
And you know it's true, I wish you'd leave me here
You know it's true, why don't you leave me here?

I saw this at Town Hall NYC on the 26th... It was really good. Then I heard it on the NPR thing last night too, but did anyone else think they sounded a bit off? Conor's voice, the instruments... (It seemed that way with Tilly too) Maybe it's just me.

This song is new. I heard a live recording of this, I forget where and when it was.

In the version I heard, I don't know about the rest of them, but the lyrics were
"The world requires no AUDIENCE" instead of "The world requires no nobody else."

Are you guys kidding me? You have completely misinterpreted the meaning of this song.

It's completely and totally ironic. Leaving the poor black child in his crumbling school or leaving a true genius in his padded room... these are both persons that don't belong where they supposedly belong today. Conor is saying how he doesn't belong anywhere. This is especially appropriate, given that this song was written and performed while on tour. Conor places images in this song of people and things that actually do belong where they are currently located today, such as the televisions in Times Square or the sound stages in California. This causes contradiction in his song, which makes the irony and sarcasm even more apparent.

to giveup:

It's not ironic as much as it is satirical. "Leave the hawks of war in their capitols" "Leave the poor black child in his crumbling school today". It's a jab at America.

I also think that its about where people and modern culture place things, and can't recognise beauty or genious, in the case of "Let the true genius in the padded room remain" etc.
And its that he belongs in that place he wants to stay, but I'm not sure if it is where HE thinks he should stay or where people think he should stay?

Now that i think of it he's talking about how people/modern culture/society place things and cant recognise deeper or fuller meaning,
And he thinks that if people think these things should stay in these places that he disagrees with then he should at least be able to be where he wants to be, and to be accepted in that place where he'd be happy.

The irony only exists in the last 4 or so stanzas, before that he is simply saying that everything belongs where it is.

anyone else think the verses of this song sound a LOT like "weather reports" off of Noise Floor? just... well, faster? it may just be the version i've downloaded, too, but i knew i'd heard something just like it. (still love both songs, of course)

"Because everything - it must belong somewhere
Just like the gold around her finger or the silver in his hair"

this reminds me of a gold digger. the ring on her finger shows marriage, and the silver represents his old age.

"Let the true genius in the padded room remain"
all the people who are deemed truly brilliant have some sort of psychosis. for example, van gogh cut off his ear.

seeing "star lit" up there (it's starlet, as in a woman in training to be a star) makes me think that "lit" is describing "star" .. You know, like Anna Nicole Smith.
"A Dead star, lit, on her pedestal" like how young girls are looking up to all these addicted stars.
I mean, it's Starlet, but I just thought that was an interesting idea.
Albeit random.

i just saw on NME a track by track interview with conor oberst about cassadaga, and when he got to this song he didn't seem to know how to describe it himself.
he says alost uncertainly that "it's just a long list. it's a long list of...things. a long list. of things. and... i guess it's good to find your place in the world, wherever that may be."

so i tend to think it's less about all that other stuff and meant to be taken almost at face value. as a list of things. and about finding where you belong among all these other things that have places.

I have a different take on this song... I think its about having to accept the world to some degree to stay sane and basicaly not to worry and be mad at everything and everyone because some things belong where they are and although we can change the world we will drive outselfs crazy thinking about every little thing. This is why he uses big examples to small examples.

So basically to be happy you cant be concerned with every little aspect of the world or you will go insane just thinking about it. And he realizes that with himself. So rather he hates where he is or love it he belongs there right now.

This sounds exactly like another song. I'm not sure if it's another Bright Eyes song or what, but that melody sounds jacked from somewhere.

i always thought it was a sarcastic song about the status-quo. basically all those things that belong somewhere only do because that's what we're taught to believe. so he basically feels depressed because that's how people suppose he has to be. no use in fighting.

and yeah there are some lines that are just there for rhyming purposes like the casserole one lol. still and all great song.
