Now I'm in your basement
Laying low to keep out of your way
I hear your footsteps
Move the floorboards above my head
I have my own routine now
I'm keeping busy in my own way
I'm learning ways to not feel
Like I'm down here forever

I hear your footsteps
Move the floorboards above my head
I hope you know that I'm down here
Just for you

I sang a song to you through the floor
To reach you upstairs
I thought I heard you call out for more
I know that's crazy
I'm pretty sure that I'm lost again
It won't get through to you
I won't get through
I think I won't get through

I'm gonna close my mouth now
You don't need more noise in your life
I miss you more than you know
But I know time makes you move on

I hear your footsteps
Move the floorboards above my head
I hope you know that I'm down here
Just for you

I sang a song to you through the floor
To reach you upstairs
I thought I heard you call out for more
I know that's crazy
I'm pretty sure that I'm lost again
It won't get through to you
I won't get through
I think I won't get through

Relax your eyes
And I'm lost again
Relax your eyes
And I'm lost again
Relax your eyes
And I'm lost again
Relax your eyes
And I'm lost again
Relax your eyes
And I'm lost again
Relax your eyes
And I'm lost again

Close your eyes

Song Meaning:The narrator goes to his girlfriend's house and tries to connect with her by singing from her basement, but then realizes he needs to move on and let her move forward as well.

General Comment:This song's meaning is so amusing to me.
When i first heard it was a time in my life
that i really needed something beautiful
to hang onto that i know wouldn't like, just
    dissapear into thin air.
All the words blend together perfectly.
It's my favorite song ever, it will be forever.
    hahaha.
But ive talked to BEN on myspace before, i still do :D

General Comment:I think that if you do look it as the guy is dead, then yes it sounds like he wants to reach out to her and let her know he is still there but can't. But hes going to stop "singing" because he knows she needs to move on even if he can't.

But I think if you look at it metaphorically, it is about someone who is still in love with an ex and is there for her.. maybe as a friend now? He is trying to deal with still loving her and wishes he could tell her the truth but can't. He can't get the words out and knows that it make things harder for her knowing.

General Comment:I don't believe this song is about someone dying. Nothing in there gives us the slightest clue to drawing a "death" conclusion. TrojanGrind also read my mind. That was the saddest part of the song to me. I cried as soon as I heard it. I can relate. 100%.

General Comment:i think its about after a break up
hes only saying all of this in death
but hed never tell her that he is there for her
doesnt seem like he wants her
he just wants her to know he still cares

I think this is about someone dying.
because i have been through the whole griving process of someone close & i got completely lost in life. this song helps explain depression in a sorta of way.

General Comment:Now I’m in your basement
I’m laying low to keep out of your way
    I hear your footsteps
Move the floorboards above my head

Well he died in Car Underwater and now he’s a ghost in her house. And he’s in her basement singing to her. Hence title of the song.

I have my own routine now
I’m keeping busy in my own way
I’m learning ways to not feel
    Like I’m down here forever

Everyone knows when you die and become a ghost your stuck like that and he’s trying to keep himself busy and trying not to remember how he’s stuck there for her.

    I hear your footsteps
Move the floorboards above my head
I hope you know that I’m down here
    Just for you

He’s talking to her and letting her know that she’s the only reason for him coming back as a ghost

I sang a song to you through the floor
    To reach you upstairs
I thought I heard you call out for more
    I know that’s crazy

Hes singing to her hoping she’ll hear him and know that he’s there. Now the calling out for more, I have three theories . I think that shes trying to get over him and sexing another guy and that’s her calling out for more and because hes in the basement he thinks shes talking to him. OR it could be unconsciously that she remembers him singing to her and shes calling out for more. OR it could be his imagination because after that he says he knows its crazy.

I’m pretty sure that I’m lost again
It won’t get through to you
    I won’t get through
    I think I won’t get through

I’m gonna close my mouth now
You don't need more noise in your life
I miss you more than you know
But I know time makes you move on

He knows that no matter what he tries in the end she won’t know he’s there because he’s a ghost she can’t hear or see him.

He’s going to stop singing to her because he knows she can’t hear him, he loves her and will miss her but he knows she has to move on and now he has to just be a silent ghost

That’s just what I think let me know if you agree

General Comment:This song is absolutely amazing...I can't even explain. When I listen to it, I get cold chills, it's that good. It's so romantic in such a sad, tragic way that I think that's what makes it so beautiful. This guy will give up anything for this girl, even his own happiness sacraficed to make her happy. That's true love.

    General Comment:More of the story.

The girl is upset he is dead. While he is right there listening. She cant see or hear him. He's just a shadow now.
