Hey, sister, are you all alone?
I'm standing out your window
Hey, little sister, can I come inside you?
I want to show you all my love
I want to be the only one
I know you like nobody ever, baby
Little sister, can't you find another way?
No more living life behind a shadow
You whisper secrets in my ear
Slowly dancing cheek to cheek
Such a sweet thing when you open up, baby
They say I'll only do you wrong
Come together 'cause I understand
Just who you really are, yeah, baby
Little sister, can't you find another way?
No more living life behind a shadow
I'm standing out your window
Hey, little sister, can I come inside you?
I want to show you all my love
I want to be the only one
I know you like nobody ever, baby
Little sister, can't you find another way?
No more living life behind a shadow
You whisper secrets in my ear
Slowly dancing cheek to cheek
Such a sweet thing when you open up, baby
They say I'll only do you wrong
Come together 'cause I understand
Just who you really are, yeah, baby
Little sister, can't you find another way?
No more living life behind a shadow

She only talks to me or "opens up" when she's clean, which is rare. I've tried so many times to encourage her to "find another way", to get her life together, go to school, get a job, stay off smack... but she always goes back to her miserable life.
1) The character is in love with someone younger than himself. Currently, their relationship is platonic, with the girl being like a little sister to him. However, the character wants her to be his lover, and take her away from her current life.
2) The character is in love with a friend's little sister. The rest of what I said above still applies.
As being a little sister myself, I can totally relate to this song. I'm always kind of "living life behind a shadow" (of my big sisters) and once I had a relationship with this older guy, who wasn't accepted by my friends, family etc (yeah maybe the guy was a bit of an asshole) but at the same time he was the only one who could really understand me.. gosh I love josh homme
Josh explained it in an AOL sessions interview in 2005.
"Hey sister why you all alone?
I'm standing out your window
Hey little sister can I come inside there"
In red light districts the women are usually sitting in windows so you can view them.
"I want to be the only one
I know you like nobody ever, baby"
He feels he has a personal relationship with this girl and knows her better than the rest of her clients.
"Little sister can't you find another way
No more living life behind a shadow"
Can't you find another occupation besides selling your body?
That's pretty silly, thinking about it now. I also think it's about a girl with low self-esteem and needs to realize that she can't hide behind the shadows any more.
