We were sitting in the living room on the sofa, the wrong way round, looking out the window. It was quiet, and then in the car park across the road we saw Elvis - look, there beside the postman's van, and he was walking around the postman's van, looking in the open door. He looked as if he was thinking about getting in, but then the postman came back, and he swaggered off, walked past the window and down the stairs, and then at the bottom of the stairs right by the caretaker's office, he started licking the pavement. Every night now since we moved in that new house there's this noise outside the door at just about half seven or eight o' clock every night. And if we go and look outside the door, Elvis'll be standing there waiting to be let in. And then he wanders into the living room, maybe sits down on one of the chairs or even lies down on the floor. He doesn't say much, he just stays there for an hour or two, watching the TV. We talk to him a bit, and then around ten o' clock, he'll go away again, and not come back until the next night. There's a lot of lanes and stuff around here, around the house - although it's right in the middle of the city it seems quite like the country, it's dead hidden - safe I suppose, made for night living. There's a lot of squirrels and birds, and Stuart says he's seen about nine foxes there when he's jumped over the fence on his way to Byres Road. Sometimes you can go out walking, and when you've been out for a wee while even you don't know where you are anymore, so it would be pretty hard for anyone else to find you. I suppose that's why he spends so much time there, that's why he's come to live there, or maybe it's just the squirrels. I read about somewhere that he likes squirrels quite a lot. There's these two videos that we got for wedding presents - called the e-files, e-files one and e-files two about how Elvis is supposed to be still alive. And one time when he came round we were watching one of those, but he didn't say anything, he just sat on the armchair. He was playing with his collar a bit, and we watched it right through and then when it finished he just got up and walked off into the mist and didn't say anything. The first few times he came around I didn't speak to him at all, I wasn't really sure what to say. And Karn spoke to him quite a lot - she seemed to know what to do more than I do. He had quite a strange manner though, he'd go into your stuff and look through it, then he'd maybe pick something up and play with it for a wee while, but he'd never make any comment about any of it. Seemed pretty rude to me. I just watched whatever Karn did, and listened to how she talked to him and then, after a while I started to copy that, and tell him a few things, not really bothered about whether he responded or said anything back or not. I think the first time I spoke to him we were sitting up on the mezzanine and I said that I would tell him about me and Wee Karn, and how it was that we'd come to be living there. I thought he probably liked the fact that we were living there because he came around so much, so I thought he might want to know how it was that it came about. We did it all over backwards, I told him. First of all we got to know each other, and then a while after that we met, and when we'd known each other for about seven years we decided to have an anniversary, and that went quite well, so after the anniversary we had a honeymoon, and that went well too, so after that we decided that we would get married. That's why we're living there now. I used to think my dad was Elvis, but I haven't told him that yet. I haven't told my dad either . . .

General Comment:elvis is a dog, and in my interpretation, he thought Elvis was his dad because perhaps his father died when he was younger, and recognized him a bit in this new dog that suddenly seems to appear quite a lot. he may have thought it was his dad's spirit

My Interpretation:An unusual yet beautiful song indeed. With a few interesting layers of complexity and multiple interpretations.

To me, the song lyrically is divided into 2 main parts - separated by the line where the narrator indicates that he received the E files videos on Elvis as a wedding present. Prior to that point there is no real indication that Elvis is anything other than an animal (Dog or Cat - although I do favor that Elvis is a dog). For example, the lines where the narrator indicates Elvis was "licking the pavement", "waiting to be let in", "jumping fences after foxes/squirrels" tends to force the listener to interpret Elvis as a dog or cat.

After the E files lyrics, the story progresses from "Elvis the dog/cat" to "Elvis the musician" before ultimately "Elvis the father". Elvis the dog "doesn't say anything" while the E files video is playing - but why would he if he were a dog/cat? This is the first indication that Elvis might not be a dog. Elvis just "played with his collar" - the narrator blurs the lines again between dog and human. Is he referring to an animal collar or a shirt collar? Moreover, the narrator thinks it's "rude" that Elvis doesn't comment on his stuff - this is the first indication the narrator believes Elvis is human.

The ending tells us more about the narrator. First, the narrator appears to have little or no relationship with his father. Because he decides to tell Elvis how his relationship with Karn came about (over 7 years) and then we later learn that whoever Elvis is, the narrator "used to think his dad was Elvis". Clarifying that he doesn't know his father. Finally, the last line is seemingly a continuation of the ambiguity thus far. When the narrator states that he hasn't told Elvis that he used to believe he was his father and follows it up with "I haven't told my dad either..." it suggests that the narrator knows who his father is - (Elvis)! And by telling Elvis the dog, he'd be telling his father as well.

General Comment:Elvis is a cat for sure, and not a stray one because he's got a collar. The collar might have a name tag or Elvis might be the name they've given him. It's quite common for cats to visit other people's houses and then go home for supper.

The speaker isn't used to cats, so finds the cat's behaviour a bit strange at first. He soon warms to it though. Sometimes they talk about the cat as if he IS Elvis but they don't really believe it, it's just a kind of game. His dad isn't dead, you don't say "I haven't told him" about somebody who is dead, you say "I didn't tell him" or "I never told him".

I think people read too much into this. It's just a stream of consciousness about a cat that visits sometimes.

General Comment:This is an unusual song, I've just been reading other people's comments and I've never got any cat vibe off this song, and still don't as a matter of fact, I always thought that it was pretty obvious that the song is about a stray dog

Song Meaning:I have always felt that Elvis IS his dad, or a memory/ghost of him and his dad's passed away. He never could communicate with his dad and the song represents the rambling way we think subjectively when faced with important but unconstructable feelings.

This ghost still "visits" him and Karn, and she copes so much better because she is less attached, sees him on a different level, and has no baggage.

His dad is Elvis - his hero - who should be missed as much as Elvis is.

    I'd welcome any thoughts/comments.

General Comment:I just finished reading these lyrics while listening to the song and it has turned into something else. It was always too hard to interpret. I am really moved by this song. I thought it was about Elvis Presley until I read the comments. The personality of Elvis the cat is so much like my cat, Socks.

General Comment:I think it's more fun to look at it as being about Elvis Presley, apparently alive and just hanging around, with insight towards the character of a couple band members and towards the marriage, just kind of thrown in. I think that the song overall is meant as a delightful bit of psuedo-Carrolian nonsense, where you can barely ever be sure what's true and what's there to throw you off.
