Did I hear you right
'cause I thought you said
Let's think it over
You have been my life
And I never planned
Growing old without you

Shadows bleeding through the light
Where the love once shined so bright
Came without a reason
Don't let go on us tonight
Love's not always black and white
Haven't I always loved you?

But when I need you
You're almost here
And I know that's not enough
And when I'm with you
I'm close to tears
'cause your only almost here

I would change the world
If I had a chance
Oh won't you let me
Treat me like a child
Throw your arms around me
Oh please protect me

Bruised and battered by your words
Dazed and shattered how it hurts
Haven't I always loved you

But when I need you
You're almost here
And I know that's not enough
And when I'm with you
I'm close to tears
'cause your only almost here

Bruised and battered by your words
Dazed and shattered now it hurts
Haven't I always loved you

But when I need you
You're almost here
Well I never knew how far behind Id left you
And when I hold you your almost here
Well I'm sorry that I took our love for granted
And now I'm with you I'm close to tears
'cause I know I'm almost here
Only almost here

My Interpretation:This song could be regarding a lost lover by death.

Explains the "almost" feeling that she gets when with him - even though he is there in spirit, he isn't because he isn't physically there. And his inability to understand why is is so upset "haven't I always loved you?" because that's what I believe it would be like after death, seeing those you loved and not being able to understand why they're so upset when they should know you still love them. Also, his line "Well I never knew how far behind Id left you" which indicates the large gap that was created by him, and in his journey to death.

The reference to the child could symbolize youth and innocence - returning to a certain time in the past - when they were together (and alive in my theory).

General Comment:Brian wrote this towards the end of his marriage to Kerry, and after hearing Delta on the radio asked her to sing it with him as a duet. She was also having troubles in her relationship at the time and could relate to the lyrics.
So it seems to be about a relationship that Brian (in the song) had somewhat taken for granted, and now realising how unhappy his partner is (about him being emotionally unavailable perhaps?), he'd do anything for her to stay with him.

General Comment:This song is about being in a relationship in which you are much more invested in than your partner they only always seem 'almost here'. Delta has told Brian that she needs to rethink the relationship, and Brian can't understand that because he asks 'haven't I always love you?' At the end of the song Brian comes to realize that he has indeed taken Delta's love for granted and that he was only 'almost here.'

(used 'Delta' and 'Brian' to make it less confusing to explain; The female & male voice obviously, not in reality.)

General Comment:This song is definitely my favourite off Mistaken Identity (her 2nd album). I believe it is about needing something or someone, but they are just out of your reach. Maybe a person who you're in love with, and they are already taken, or about loving someone and they don't know.

Overall, I love it so much...
