So let me get this straight
Say now you love me all along?
What makes you hesitate
To tell me in words what you really feel?

I can see it in your eyes you mean all of what you say
I remember so along ago saying I felt the same way
Now we both have separate lives and lovers (and lovers)
Insignificantly enough we both have significate others

Only time will tell
Time will turn and tell

We are who we were with
Could've been lovers but at least you're still my day late friend
We are who
We are who we were with
Who knew what we know now
Could've been more but at least you're still my day late friend
We are who
We are who we were with

What thoughts they change and times they rearrange I don't know who you are anymore
Lust come and go and this I know I'm not who you recall anymore
But I must confess you're so much more then I remember
Can't help but entertain this thought
Thoughts of us together

We are who we were with
Could've been lovers but at least you're still my day late friend
We are who
We are who we were with
Who knew what we know now
Could've been more but at least you're still my day late friend
We are who
We are who we were with

My day late friend

So let me get this straight
All these years and you were no where to be found
And now you want me for your own
But you're a day late and my love just still renown

We are who we were with
Could've been lovers but at least you're still my day late friend
We are who
We are who we were with

Who knew what we know now
Could've been more but at least you're still my day late friend
We are who
We are who we were with

My Interpretation:"So let me get this straight
Say now you loved me all along
    What made you hesitate
To tell me with words what you really feel?"

I actually think that they were in a relationship, a very long time ago. "Say now you loved me all along." They probably had a bad break up, and hadn't talked for a really long time. "What made you hesitate" Is a hint saying that she left. She was probably awful to him. "Really feel." During that time, she's really loved him.

"I can see it in your eyes
You mean all of what you say
    I remember so along ago
See, I felt that same way"

Here, I think he's saying that he knows that she's telling the truth, and really does love him, but he's actually felt that same way before about something else she's said, a very long time ago.

"Now we both have separate lives and lovers
    (And lovers)
    Insignificantly enough
    We both have significant others
Only time will tell, time will turn and tell."

They moved on from eachother, but now that she's back, he's not sure how much the 'signifigant others' matter. And he says "Well time will tell us if we back together or not."

    "But thoughts they change
    And times they rearrange
I don't know who you are anymore
    Love's come and go
    And this I know
I'm not who you recall anymore"

He's saying that her thoughts must have changed about him, or everyone's thoughts, and time in general changed. He's saying that he doesn't even know who she is anymore due to how much she's changed, and that she doesn't know him either, because they grew up so much.

    "But I must confess
You're so much more than I remember
Can't help but entertain these thoughts
    Thoughts of us together"

So now, he thinks so much more of her than he used to, and he can't help but thinking of them being together as the people they are now.

"We are who we were when
    Could have been lovers
But at least you're still my day late friend
    We are who
We are who we were when
Who knew what we know now?
    Could have been more
But at least you're still my day late friend
    We are who
We are who we were when"

So! he's saying that they are who they were when they could have been lovers, but now they're just friends. 'Day late' refers to her and that she could have told him sooner. If only they knew how they really felt about eachother before, they could have been more, but at least they're still friends.

"So let me get this straight
All these years and you were nowhere to be found
And now you want me for your own
    But you're a day late
And my love, she's still renowned"

All these years, she was no where to be found. She left him, and now she wants him back, but she's too late. But he doesn't deny his love for her, and he knows very well he loves her.

General Comment:I definitely agree with fithol.xo. If he didn't feel the same, he wouldn't say:

    "But I must confess
You're so much more than I remember
Can't help but entertain these thoughts
    Thoughts of us together"

He still has the hots for her, I think. It's like a movie, I want to know what happens!

General Comment:wow..this song hits home with me...i was madly in love with this guy for 5 years...but by the third year of our relationship he was heavily involved in drugs. In and out of rehab i stuck by his side...but again and again he relapsed...he chose drugs over me...and even tho he finally got sober for a couple months i still had to say goodbye because of all the pain and heartache he caused me.I couldn't even look at him the same way. he's back in rehab now..we've been broken up for 6 months..he called me yesterday and told me to listen to this song....you think he wants me back?

Memory:I've definitely been in this situation. And not gonna lie it sucks.
I just got married to the love of my life.
But there's this guy who was a really really good friend. That I liked as more than a friend. The wedding was getting closer and closer and he would make a joke now and then about there not being a reception instead it'll be the divorce, and random stuff that made me wonder.
He has a fiance, since like 3 or 4 years ago. They were having problems.
Now I'm married. Now this guy and I are still friends, but now we talk about what could've been, but it's too late. Though he thinks I should just run back to him.
We had the chance but uncertainty got in the way.

General Comment:To me, this sounds like a guy and a girl secretly loved each other in the past but they never admitted it. The guy got over it, and both of them found new loves and moved on. Now, however, the girl is back in the guy's life, and he's remembering what he really liked about her in the past, but he knows it's too late for them to be together, although she doesn't want to accept that. She's his "day late friend" because they can't be together.

General Comment:I think it's about a girl who was afraid to tell him what she really felt. By the time she finally did, it was too late because they both had moved on with their lives. They both used to have feelings for each other but she waited too long to tell him.

General Comment:Man its creepy how much I relate to some of their songs
Anberlin is such a great band, they can express feeling that sometimes you yourself find difficult and can't put in words sometimes. well for me at least and the other people on the boards and this song is perfect example.

My Interpretation:Everyone else (with a couple exceptions) seems to think they both loved eachother but neither one told the other. I'm not saying thats wrong but in my oppinion I think he told her. The way he says the first paragraph

"So let me get this straight
Say now you loved me all along
    What made you hesitate
To tell me with words what you really feel?"

makes me think that. The way he says it almost sounds annoyed. Like, What were you thinking! If he hadn't told her he wouldn't have the right to be annoyed with her for not telling him.

The way I see it is like what I could see happening with this one girl I like. I have liked her for 2.5 years, and she has known it all the time. I'm always reminding her with presents and everything, but she is 2 years younger than me and neither of us wan't (or really are allowed) to have a bf or gf while we are in high school. She hasn't ever told me flat out she likes me back (though I get the idea she does, from times she grabs my hand or hints at it). She never tells anyone who she likes till after she doesn't like them anymore though so ya. She knows I like her, I get that idea but i'm not absolutely sure. I could see myself going to college, coming back once she can have a bf, but it not working out for whatever reason. I go get another chick, I run into her, catch up a little, and then she confesses her love for me. Then I'm a little peeved cause now I got another girl and it's gonna be a mess dumping her so I can get back with the love of my life.

General Comment:I know exactly what this song is about, cause I was in the exact same situation recently, and it sucks..
It's about a girl and a guy, who are really good friends. He always loved her, and she always loved him, but he eventually got over her and found someone else. Then she found someone, but realized she was still in love with him, so she told him her feelings once it was too late and they both had someone else.. damn my stupid friend. 7 months too late =/
