Lyrics for Blue Angels Air Show as interpreted by onelegedgirl

Blue Angels Air Show Lyrics
Claire's turning blonde for the summer, I guess
The sunlight just soaks into her hair
And she sits next to me on the motorboat
And shyly replies as to which boy she likes
At her school

So I am reminded of things I've forgotten
The way doors can open and people just walk in
It's not unexpected, no, it's just how you planned it
I'm beginning to think that it might never happen
But now it is happening

There's a show we can see at the base outside of town
Where planes, they turn circles in the air
I watch you stand next to me with your hand over your mouth
And join the crowd's heavy gasp
One for each time they pass overhead

So we've been selected in this beautiful lottery
We struggled so long, but it ended so easy
It's starting to suface, all golden and god-like
This feeling we had every day and every night
It bursts in an energy
A door, it is opening

This song was featured on a 7" record released by the music magazine, Devil in the Woods. It also featured a song from Rilo Kiley, and Sorry about Dresden. (Conor's older brother's band.) It is pretty much impossible to find outside of eBay, but you can download the song anywhere.

When I first heard this song I instantly loved it. I'm not sure of the meaning though. I really like the second stanza. It's my favorite part of the song.

this song made me think of rediscovering how you used to feel when you were young and everything was so fresh and new...the guy in this song realizes this after spending time with a little girl and he almost sees the world through her eyes or at least through his eyes when he was young again...he feels like he has a new outlook on life as a result, and there are suddenly so many new opportunities/endless possibilities ...just like there seemed to be when he was younger. the energy is his potential finally shining through unencumbered by the jadedness of life one eventually acquires..

I never really cared for this song much (dont get me wrong, i'm obsessed with Bright Eyes- just not this song) until today, when I, bored as usual, clicked on the lyrics, hoping to read the comments and see what others thought of it. But I read the lyrics and I have decided to give it another listen.
Also, I have noticed that in this song he uses that lottery reference, which he also uses in "Waste of Paint" and in "First Day of My Life"

possibly my favourite bright eyes song. i love this song because there seems to be so much possibility in it what with the new opportunities ("doors opening", "how people just walk in"), which is a different take on most bright eyes songs.

i don't know why but conor's descriptions on this song is more intriguing for me than the others.

first, of how the crowd is so entranced by the planes ("and join the crowd's heavy gasp one for each time they pass overhead"). and then with his observation of claire. it's amazing how with just one line "and shyly replies as to which boy she likes at her school" he draws a caricature of her, as a young & seemingly quiet girl who's slowly blossoming through the changes in her life. much like how the colour of her hair absorbs the changing environment around her.

she seems to handle the changes around & within her gracefully - with her slight reluctance to reveal her perceptions of these changes and the one blossoming in her heart - the boy she likes at school. he painted her so beautifully, it makes her really intriguing.

I honestly don't think that it's about a new door being opened, I think it's about a door being re-opened. Think about it.

I'd say it's about second chances, more or less. When he says "I'm beginning to think that it might never happen/But now it is happening" it makes me think of someone getting their so-called big break.

To me its about trying to regain that fresh view of the world you were blessed with when you were young. "Claire" seems to be a child the narrator of the song is speaking to, and looking at her reminds him of what he's forgot. The wonder of our fragile existence "we struggled so long, but it ended so easily". Like a lot of conor's work it reminds me of "the catcher in the rye". "Claire" is doing for the narrator (maybe conor), what Holdens sister did for him.
this song seems to describe the awkwardness of growing older and discovering our lives limitations, flaws, and temporary base.

Is Claire a lover or a young girl, a child, he spends time with?

This is also on the new "Noise Floor" release with this note about the song:
"Released on a split seven-inch that came free with DEVIL IN THE WOODS magazine's Saddle Creek issue. A sentimental song about my cousin Clare and fighter jet ballet."
Pretty much clears up the confusion about Clare. Also I'm sure the base he's singing about is Offutt Airforce Base in Bellevue, NE--just about 10 minutes outside of Omaha. I'm a SoCal kid but was dating a girl from Omaha for a few years and had the displeasure of going to a wedding reception at Offutt once. The green beans were terrible, I remember.

hiddeninromance, this song really reminded me of catcher in the rye as well! i was just listening to it for the first time on noise floor and it just made me think of holden and his relationship with his little sister phoebe right away... the way he enjoys her innocence and chilhood even though he's lost his. so i guess conor sort of feels that way about his cousin, and is looking back at what is was like to be younger and be able to find joy in everything. this is really a beautiful song.

the liger is dead on, clare is his cousin. i think her innocence helps him realize such deeper things. i noticed too how he references the lottery like he does in a waste of paint. lottery as in love/finding true love i guess. but now he is much happier like he "won" the lottery. "we've been selected" whatever where as in waste of paint he's really negative about it "will my number come up eventually". idk when this song was recorded exactly but it makes sense if it was after w.o.p. almost as like a reply/continuation on the lottery aspect at least.
