I got troubles, Lord, but not today
Cause they gonna wash away, they gonna wash away.
And I have sins, Lord, but not today
Cause they gonna wash away, they gonna wash away.

And I had a woman, Lord, but not today
Cause she done washed away, she done washed away.
And I get lonely, Lord, but not today
Cause I'm gonna wash away, I'm gonna wash away.

I got troubles, Lord, but not today
Cause I'm gonna wash away, this old river gonna take me away.

General Comment:He has troubles and he's lonely but just not today. Why? He's going to "wash away".
How can you erase loneliness and troubles temporarily with such confidence?

Well, he's using water references - river/wash away so a more literal reading is that he goes out on a boat to forget his troubles.
But I would guess they are metaphors, so it's likely a song about escapism through drugs. It sums up the opiate experience pretty good. So it could be a heroin song.

General Comment:Actually, I've heard this song was made specifically for the show "Lost". Excellent show must come with excellent music... right? Well, I've heard rumors (nothing solid) that Joe Purdy was contacted to create this song for the show. And it's about the show. If you haven't seen Lost, do it, features a little bit of Joe Purdy's music thanks to Hurley!

General Comment:i dont think this song is about suicide at all. i think its about how even when times are bad you can just enjoy a moment or a day: "i got troubles Lord, but not today". its forgetting your troubles for a moment and just enjoying yourself.
i also think this was the intention when the song was used in Lost, even though they were in a really bad situation, in that moment everything was ok

General Comment:I'm going to have to say it's about baptism. He washes away his friends, fears, troubles, and most importantly - his sins. Only baptism has the power to wash sins away, literally, so besides the whole "we get along, Lord, but not today" part, this makes the most sense.

General Comment:beautiful uplifting song. I am one of THE biggest lost fans out there
hence my username. I heard it on lost and i was fascinated by it. I
didn't know who sang it so i just looked up what i assumed it was called
("wash away") and i looked around. It was funny because there were many
other "wash away" songs and i finally picked the one i thought was best.
out of all the artist the name Joe Purdy just fit for some reason. I then
became a huge fan. Amazing song!

General Comment:basically, its about finding the strength to move on.
the song lists all of the things he has in his life, but now are "wash[ing] away"-- he is moving on from these various aspects.

General Comment:It isn't "We get along Lord, but not today"

He is saying "We get lonely Lord, but not today"

Memory:I'm sure this song is on the Dawn(?) dishwash liquid commercial where they are cleaning the animals affected by oil spills. That commercial is just so cute and warms my heart.. I wish I could have a job like that.

General Comment:Well, I'm not sure what it meant to Joe Purdy but I feel like I can relate to this song. My interpretation is that he's had all these trouble and he's lost friends and has sinned and he's just been miserable and crying but he's decided he's going to let his hurt go and I don't think it's about suicide. I think it's more about even though he has troubles he's going try and let go of them and be happy. I think it's more about overcoming his problems then the problems disappearing...and even though they are still there he was able to let go of them and be happy. well that's my take on it. Well, I love this song and it always makes me feel better.
