Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
I see you and you see me
Watch you blowin' the lines
When you're making a scene
Oh girl, you've got to know
What my head overlooks
The senses will show to my heart
When it's watching for lies
You can't escape my
Private eyes
They're watching you
They see your every move
Private eyes
They're watching you
Private eyes
They're watching you, watching you
Watching you, watching you
You play with words you play with love
You can twist it around baby that ain't enough
'Cause girl I'm gonna know
If you're letting me in or letting me go
Don't lie when you're hurting inside
'Cause you can't escape my
Private eyes
They're watching you
They see your every move, baby
Private eyes
They're watching you
Private eyes
They're watching you, watching you
Watching you, watching you
Ooh, why you try to put up a front for me?
I'm a spy but on your side you see
Slip on, into any disguise
I'll still know you
Look into my
Private eyes
They're watching you
They see your every move

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
Plastic Bag

Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
Yes and no. It's basically an upsy-daisy romantic relationship: The woman can do what she can to hide her true feelings, but the man knows better and therefore remains faithful to her.
Yeah, except for the fact that it's not a relationship yet. <br /> Otherwise he won't be watching her privately.<br /> <br /> And from what I gather, the man IS hiding his true feelings from her!<br /> <br /> I'm not quite sure what you mean by "an upsy-daisy romantic relationship"?????????
This song is not about a romantic relationship, it is obviously about a stalker.
Top tune. Is he spying on the girl?
Perhaps he only perfers to thinks she has feelings for him too? And that the occasional locking of their eyes is the only thrill he gets.<br /> <br /> Maybe it's purely unrequited love!<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />
obviously
I doesn't even matter what this song is about; it's just amazing.
Yeah, I admit it's one hell of a tune, but you're wrong in saying it "doesn't even matter what this song is about"<br /> <br /> After listening o this song a few times, the thrill is gone. And even if it wasn't the lyrics would still be important.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br />
Well seeing that they're all dressed in Inspector Gadget coats and have "You can't see me staring at you glasses on" it sounds like they're preparing for a pre-meditated rape. Specially the stache wearin guy who has a guitar and never plays it. Anyhoo, sick as jam.
Does anyone know what "watch you blowin' the lines when you're making a scene" means??
I would say a double entendre between drugs (blow, lines), the fact that they're arguing a lot, or that she's making everyone freak out upon seeing how beautiful she is. It's an interesting line, no doubt.
@Floyddead the first poster is correct that it's a double entendre - "blowing the lines when you're making the scene" means snorting cocaine, and, just saying whatever makes her look cool, true or not
@Floyddead I think it means means she's rehearsed some kind of speech to give him at a dramatic moment in an argument they're having, but the lines don't reflect her true feelings so she messes up on the words.
she's trying too hard to hide her feelings from him, whether good or bad.
perhaps her body language doesn't match what she's saying.
Blowing the line would be touching upon a sensitive matter or a no go zone
