God, that was strange to see you again
Introduced by a friend of a friend
Smiled and said, "Yes, I think we've met before"
In that instant it started to pour

Captured a taxi despite all the rain
We drove in silence across Pont Champlain
And all of that time you thought I was sad
I was trying to remember your name

This scar is a fleck on my porcelain skin
You tried to reach deep but you couldn't get in
And now you're outside me, you see all the beauty
Repent all your sin

Nothing but time and a face that you'll lose
I chose to feel it and you couldn't choose
I'll write you a postcard, I'll send you the news
From the house down the road from real love

Live through this and you won't look back
Live through this and you won't look back
Live through this and you won't look back

There's one thing I have to say so I'll be brave
You were what I wanted
I gave what I gave
I'm not sorry I met you
I'm not sorry it's over
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save

General Comment:It's a really sad love story in my opinion.

The imagery of a "scar" on "porcelain skin" emphasises the prominence of the relationship to the narrator. "Porcelain skin" conjures up the notions of preciousness and beauty, and this "other person" came into perspective and changed things. But the change was negative and it caused a wound, literally. Although the wound healed with time, it left a scar. The significance of the scar can be observed both visually and by touch, it's an obviously different patch of skin than anywhere else, it's irreversible and it's although it's the body's best attempt to patch itself up, it can never be the same. Healing is good, but a scar can be disfiguring, just some of my thoughts.

I've got a few interpretations about the next line, the first would be that the "other person" tried to make it work but just couldn't. Whether it was because he had a problem, or she just wasn't the one he was looking for is unknown, but I'd like to think that he had some factors which affected the relationship. I like to imagine that it was because this woman was a fling, and he perhaps had a family. This ties in rather nicely with the fact that he could forget her (she didn't mean so much to him) but he made a permanent difference in her life.

This would lead to a different interpretation of the subsequent lines:

"And now you're outside me, you see all the beauty, repent all your sin"

The pair are no longer together. The guy is literally outside (as with sexual intercourse imagery) as well as outside of her life altogether. It becomes so much easier to admire the narrator's beauty without the burden of getting discovered, as well as without having to deal with the narrator's needs, emotional problems, etc. The sin is the guy's. He betrayed his wife's trust, and can resume his life normally (assume the adultery was not discovered) while the narrator is left back at square one, with the tragic role of burying everything, her memories, her experiences. She has so much pain but the guy is so much better off. The rest just falls into place I guess.

General Comment:I'm not reading eight pages of comments, but from what I've read is, you guys are neglecting to realize that they're BOTH singing the last stanzaa. It's not just the female singing it.

This isn't about a guy who can't remember what happened to them and a girl that was heartbroken but was okay with giving herself to him in the past...

They BOTH gave themselves to each other, and they BOTH have nothing left to say/save, and they're BOTH not sorry. This is a mutual acknowledgment from both people that they had this thing in the past, and it didn't work out. Don't forget the title of the song. "your ex-lover is dead" means that they're not the same person that they were when they had something. Her scar is a fleck, but it's also a scar, and a thing of the past.

I also want to point out that when I originally listened to this song, I didn't imagine it as two people singing to each other, but two different voices singing the same perspective. One single person couldn't remember the ex-lovers name, and has a scar, and will write a postcard. It could be one perspective, not two.

This song is beautiful. I think it's about two people who were once very in love but it just didnt work out and like many relationships, they broke up.

    The verse:
You tried to reach deep but you never got in
And now you're outside me, you see all the beauty
    Repent all your sin

I think means that he kind of took her for granted thinking that she would fall apart without him and so now she's saying, "you see all the beauty, repent all your sins" basically, you missed out on a good thing and he sees that now.

    Also the verse:
Nothing but time and a face that you'll lose
I chose to feel it and you couldn't choose
I'll write you a postcard, I'll send you the news
From the house down the road from real love

Is so beautiful. She chose to "feel" it and he just couldn't choose what he wanted so she made his choice for him and left for good (emotionally). She's basically saying that she will find someone else who will love her the way she wants to be loved.

So sad. Because you can feel how much they cared and loved for each other but at the same time, sometimes what's done is done and there is no going back. So in the end, they are happy with where they ended up.

General Comment:One lyric that I think people are REALLY missing out on is "Repent all your sins."

What is repenting? It's to feel bad for what you did. She is telling him that he needs to feel sorry for what he did. You can tell that she is still broken by the fact that she gave so much and he couldn't put in what she was putting in.

"I'll write you a postcard, I'll send you the news
From the house down the road from real love"

She's moved on and has found something better (or at least someone that makes her happy).

Come guys, it's not that hard ;)

General Comment:This is one of my favorite songs of all time. The lyricism is phenomenal. From the posts I've read I took a slightly different meaning from the song (after listening to it 500 times). In my opinion:

The song is about two people who used to have a spark/be in the primary stages of love. From the first verse coming from the male part, it being so strange to see her again and they both pretend that everything is normal by being cordial and saying they have met before. They end up getting a cab together so I assume they knew each other on more of a personal level in their relationship. When the male part says he was trying to remember her name really threw me off. It made me think the song was about a girl who loved a guy but he didn't love her back. The more I listened and the duet in the 2nd to next verse changed my first opinion. After the male part about forgetting her name, the female comes in with a more aggressive part stating that what the male did her is only a "fleck" on her perfection. She goes on to tell him that he tried to reach within her to find love but couldn't. She is basically saying that he tried to love her but didn't. Now he is looking at her and realizing how beautiful she is and she wants him to apologize. Where the duet begins is really where I ground my opinion of the meaning of this song. Both parts come in saying that they felt love but the other person didn't and it is that person's fault for the relationship falling apart. Each reinforces that they felt true love and they were there and will "send a post card" to the other who never made it to the same depth of feeling. The next part to me, "Live through this and you won't look back." seemed to be more an inner monologue. Each individual is saying to themselves to be strong and get through this because they will live on. In the last verse each takes their final stand to say how they feel and that they do love the other person and they aren't sorry for what they went through and are going through because it was worth it to have that person. The song ends somewhat abruptly but with closure. They both admit in the last two lines that there is nothing to save but they don't regret any of it.

That was a very long winded explanation so I apologize. If you are still with me I will simplify all of that...

Two people were in love. They broke up. Guy says he doesn't remember the girl. Girl says he means nothing to her. Each pretends to be strong. Each blames the other person for the break up. Each then admits to themselves that there are still feelings. Each then admits those feelings to the other. Each admits there is no relationship to salvage. Song ends.

General Comment:To me, I always associated this as being almost a companion piece to One More Night. The two songs tell a story we all experience when we age, the inevitable break up and the running into each other later on in life.

My thought on One More Night is that final night of sex you have before its time to go your separate ways. I believe the man is far more emotionally attached and committed to the relationship then the woman is, he seems on the verge of literally breaking down, screaming and begging, even grabbing the woman. As where, she, almost seems cold and just going through the motions, like a person who's head, or for this instance, heart just isn't in it.

And then we come to that random chance meeting with this person, I would say, years later. A friend of a friend introduces them, someone who couldn't possibly know the back story between them. The man, thinks to himself, just like anyone does after realizing the world does not end after one relationship, this woman he had been so infatuated with, to beg, cry and possibly even physically harm, and he can't even remember her name now?

Now, she's sitting on the other side of this cab looking at this guy who tried so hard with her, but no matter what he did, he could never get to that emotional part of her. She has this air to her, this idea that he still this way about her, and sees him looking off into the distance possibly being sad at the thought of her, yet in all honesty, the guys there just trying to remember her name. In the end, she did feel something, she just choose to hide it, he wasn't for her, or at least shes trying to justify that thought to herself. But now, now shes with someone new, someone with real love for her, or at least that's how she sees it and shes thinking of telling him the news.

But at the end of it all, there voices and thoughts unite, and in quite unison of this taxi crossing this bridge on a rainy day in Ottawa, they think:

There's one thing I want to say, so I'll be brave
    You were what I wanted
    I gave what I gave
I'm not sorry I met you
    I'm not sorry it's over
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save

Because like all people, they are shaped by their experiences. We all are. Those miserable relationships we have? They ultimately make us better people in the end. That's what this song is truly about, the ability to admit, you don't feel sorry for having that relationship, and having gone through that pain they gave you.

General Comment:Great song. Currently helps me get through some shitty times.
"There's one thing I want to say, so I'll be brave
    You were what I wanted
    I gave what I gave
I'm not sorry I met you
    I'm not sorry it's over
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save"
Those lines sum it up beautifully. After a relationship, be it a short one as described in the song or a rather serious one, more often than not, there is good reason for a relationship ending and although everybody feels sorry (mostly for themselves), there is really no reason to feel that way. Things happen for a reason and in most cases, there is nothing one can do about it. Just accept it. Live it. Don't be sorry for what happened or question yourself.
It helped/helps me a lot right now and I'm pretty sure a lot of help take a lot from this song.
    Thanks STARS!!

One more thing regarding the lyrics. I don't know if it has been mentioned, but if not: The line "And all of that time you thought I was sad, I was trying to remember your name" should be "And all of that time you thought I was sad, I was trying to remember you and me". Listen closely and you will notice.

    General Comment:awesome song.
i think its about two people who were possibly dating or just sexual encounters.but they were close to actually having "relationship". the first verse makes me laugh just because i was kinda in a position like that i went to a job interview and there was my ex.we had to pretend like we didnt know each other and we had no past. that introsuction sparks everything.they both start remmbering the almost relationship that they could had had.when the girl sings to me its like shes saying "hey yeah you were a big deal i almost loved you i could have loved you and it hurt it hurt badly but i got over it.i realized im not a glass doll shit ends it hurts than you get over it.im sure youll forget&ill forget too." at the end its like their saying their not sorry for how it all played out.even if it did end badly..... definitly my fav song, when i hear it it just brings me back to bittersweet memories and make me realize that all these ex you have will all forget about you&these people that you were close to are now complete strangers.

Song Meaning:To me, this song represents mixed feelings with someone, and then realizing that maybe it's supposed to be, and there's nothing to save anymore.

"It's nothing but time and a face that you lose
I chose to feel it and you couldn't choose
    I'll write you a postcard
    I'll send you the news
From a house down the road from real love..."

I feel like she might have expressed her emotions, and he chose to ignore his feelings. (or the other way around)

"There's one thing I want to say, so I'll be brave
    You were what I wanted
    I gave what I gave
I'm not sorry I met you
    I'm not sorry it's over
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save"

She gave what she gave, and now there's nothing left to save, if there are not shared feelings. Everything happens for a reason.

Whatever the meaning, this song expresses so much feeling, it probably represents something different for everyone!
