Used to worry for each other
No one's bothered like before
We sleep with each others friends
Sneak around, fall apart, and come back for more
We sit around drinking tables
Stabilized and keeping score
But my mind is somewhere out the door
Oh, we have grown
Maybe I've overstayed awhile
In my time in exile and
Oh, time has flown
And the only thing I've learned
I want a life now of my own
We go to clubs
The songs are old
The evening's blown
We go our ways
And take taxi's home
Talk of Sunday outings
And medicate to fight the doubting
But we know we'll always be alone
We have grown
I've overstayed awhile
In my time in exile and
Oh, time has flown
And the only thing learned
I want a life now of my own
Of my own
But that's my year spent in exile
Second guessed and dressed up in tatters
My birth feet didn't take this path
And I'm still looking for a life that matters
More than chit chat
We listen to The Streets
We're all deadbeats
And these old habits are starting to show through
Sorry I didn't get to know you
Oh, time has flown
I've overstayed awhile
In my time in exile and
Oh, we have grown
The one thing that I've learned
I want a life now of my own
Bye bye to the friends I've known
In my time in exile
No one's bothered like before
We sleep with each others friends
Sneak around, fall apart, and come back for more
We sit around drinking tables
Stabilized and keeping score
But my mind is somewhere out the door
Oh, we have grown
Maybe I've overstayed awhile
In my time in exile and
Oh, time has flown

Yes, there is obviously some relationship worked into these lyrics, however, here it's just a vehicle used to convey this mood of dissatisfaction with the world in which he lives. He's got a girl who sleeps around. He gets drunk every night. He takes drugs to feel better. And after, "a year spent in exile" which translates to a year of doing something he knew didn't fit with him, he's tired. He wants something that actually has substance; something he can feel down to the very core of his inner being. Something that he doesn't doubt in the least. No second guessing. No lies. Only truth.
1. Exile is an ironic play on words. In his meaningless sociality he is exiled from himself.
2. The "we" could be anyone but in this song it is a actual group of friends.
3. He loves his friends and the moments but he recognizes their futility.
"We have grown, time has flown, and the only thing I've learned, I want a life now of my own (something meaningful and real)."
"We sit around drinking tables, stabilized and keeping score, but my mind is somewhere out the door (there must be something more)."
"That's my year spent in exile, second guessed (by himself) and dresed up in tatters, my birth feet didn't take this path (this is not his destiny) and I'm still looking for a life that matters (more than chit chat.)"
"I've overstayed (time to go home) awhile..."
peace
And it hits him, just like it hits us. We need to change. Looking for a life that is more than chit chat.
he left his old friends and life and was in "exile" during the relationship. at first it was a high for him but it's old now.
peace,
