I won't mistake you for problems with me
I won't let my moods ruin this, you'll see
I won't take everything good and move it away
I won't be left dancing alone to songs from the past
Would you stay home and keep our memories warm with me
Would you give all your love for a run at the past with me
I know you're sad even though you say that you're not
I know you're scared even though you say that you're not
I won't get mad when you say things are getting too hard
I won't make all of your love so scared to come through our yard
I won't scream in my head and let it isolate me
I won't be left dancing alone to songs from the past.

General Comment:thatpartydress said this in 2006: in a bootleg, one of them said they were talking to their dad on the phone (who is divorced from their mom) and he was listening to a song that he used to listen to with their mom, or something. and tegan/sara was thinking, "how could he do that?" that's what "i won't be left dancing alone to songs from the past" is from.

i think this is where the meaning derives from. she's reflecting on, or saying what they are thinking, what they are not saying, what they didn't say and didn't do... the characters in the situation (her parents, in this instance). she also doesn't accept that it's basically without any meaning and just simple for them to listen to the music that they used to together, or to experience alone the things they know as shared, that the whole thing was worth that little. where does love go when it goes? if that love was real at one point, wouldn't it be enough? shouldn't it be?

i also think this song is just really sad and heartbreaking. the "i know you're sad even though you say that you're not, i know you're scared even though you say that you're not" always really gets me the most. the way she sings it is like she's understanding and empathizing, or she's feeling what she's saying, which makes it all the more affecting when listening. despite what they show, she knows they're sad, it's scary.

My Interpretation:i see this as a hopeful song. the speaker obviously has a past that hangs around and haunts her, even while she is trying to pursue a new relationship. she is trying to forget about the past, and asking this new person for help tackling old fears and sadnesses from past relationships that won't go away. at the same time, she is asking for this new person to not leave like everyone else has ("will you stay home and keep our memories warm with me") so new memories can form, of the two of them.

the speaker mentions not letting her sadness isolate her ("i won't scream in my head and let it isolate me"), to put herself and her feelings 100% into this new relationship. she knows that this new person is afraid and because of how these past relationships could affect their new one. she also knows it will get hard, because rehabilitating a heart is never easy work ("i won't get mad when you say things are getting too hard").

people who have been hurt deeply in the past tend to attribute these qualities to anyone they begin a new relationship with -- sometimes it even prevents them from getting into a new relationship. i think the speaker is talking from this position. the difference is she's found someone she wants to try with again, and she's trying to clear the ghosts from her past so she can find happiness again.

General Comment:I don't know why, but this song makes me think of people exchanging vows at a wedding, starting a new chapter of their life and talking about their hopes/fears. The lyrics are sort of conflicting, at some points, they ask someone to keep their memories "warm", but in others, they say they "won't be left dancing alone to songs from the past", meaning they'll let go of the past. Not quite sure what it means, but lovely song :)

General Comment:this song.. well, it really fits my situation in some ways.
i thing she sings about her misbehaving towards her gf and how she feels like she is guilty that their relationship is going bad.
and i think she sees with the eyes of her gf and feels how she hurts her, though her gf don't say that she is sad and hurt.

General Comment:what i think this song means to me is, her and her girlfriend or whatever are together and on the verge of breaking up but she doesn't want to because she loves her lover so much. but whenever they fight they overeact and make it worse. but shes tired of trying to make things work so shes confused. so like when she says
    "i won't mistake you
    for problems with me
    i won't let my moods
    ruin this you'll see
    i won't take everything good
    and move it away"

i think shes trying to say that she wont do those things to avoid fighting so she can be together with her lover.
basically my situation with my boyfriend :(

General Comment:This song, to me, means that she was dating this girl, and they were in love, but for some reason they broke up, but now she wants to go back out with her.
"Would you give all you love
for a run at the past with me"

that to me is like she is saying give me yr love so we can try this whole relationship thing again. And she talks about her partner being scared, even though she says she not becuase the partner is scared about having to deal with the heart break again. basically the whole song is about her trying to woo her ex gf back.

General Comment:It's about someone who is in a relationship and in love, but somehow they keep overreacting and screwing it up.

The other person in the relationship is starting to get tired of it, but she still wants it to work and is trying to get better.

exactly where i'm pretty much at. =|

General Comment:This song rings so true for me right now. I’ve just got involved with and guy and at first I got scared and tried to back away from him. I claimed it was because of him but it was just my insecurities from everything that’s happened to me in my past. But he stuck around and he’s helping me through everything. I realise now he’s the best things that’s happened to me in so long and he’s helping me become so much more open and honest.
For me this song is about realising when you need to take risks and put yourself out there. It’s about accepting your past but refusing to let it take control of your future and admitting you need help every once in a while.
