I close my eyes
And I smile, knowing that everything is alright
To the core, so close that door
Is this happening?

My breath is on your hair, I'm unaware
That you opened the blinds and let the city in
Oh God, you held my hand and we stand
Just taking in everything

And I knew it from the start
So our arms are opened wide
And your head is on my stomach
And we're trying so hard not to fall asleep
Here we are on this 18th floor balcony
We're both flying away...

So we talked, about moms and dads
About family pasts
Just getting to know where we came from
Our hearts were on display
For all to see
I can't believe this is happening to me

I raised my hands as if to show you that I was yours
That I was so yours for the taking
I'm so yours for the taking
And that's when I felt the wind pick up
I grabbed the rail while choking up
These words to say, and then you kissed me

And I knew it from the start
My arms are opened wide
And your head is on my stomach
And we're trying so hard not to fall asleep
Here we are on this 18th floor balcony
We're both flying away...

And I'll try to sleep
To keep you in my dreams
'Til I can bring you home with me
I'll try to sleep
And when I do I'll keep you in my dreams

I knew it from the start
So my arms are opened wide
And your head is on my stomach
And we're trying so hard not to fall asleep
So here we are on this 18th floor balcony, yeah

I knew it from the start
So my arms are opened wide
And your head is on my stomach
No, we're not going to sleep (sleep)
Here we are on this 18th floor balcony
We're both flying away ...

My Interpretation:I really feel like this is a song about a guy who is just so madly in love that he can't believe it. He's holding her, touching her hair, she's laying on his stomach, they're talking about their lives, and he is in disbelief at how perfect everything is in that moment.

General Comment:I feel that this song is about two people who are in love, but have a suicide pact, and one of them may have gotten life altering news and they overdosed on some medication, and are waiting to die in each others arms.

Song Meaning:*DISCLAIMER* I have just obtained a copy of Justin Furstenfeld's book Crazy Making. It's not very detailed, but it contains all the lyrics to all current (The Answers - Approaching Normal) Blue October songs, and his inspiration behind them. As I said, it's not very detailed, but it's his words on every Blue October song that is in the book. I know everyone interprets a song differently from everyone else, but having the original intent behind the song will be helpful to people who don't fully understand a song. Also, any grammatical errors are not made by me, I'm putting down Justin's words exactly how he writes them. So yea... enjoy :)

General Comment:The version that I have of this song says, "On this 18th floor balcony...we're both.. trying to make it snow." It's a live version of the song that the band performed. I actually prefer the live version as compared to the studio recorded version. I'm not sure which live performance they use those lyrics, but I love them.

General Comment:This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. I literally put my ipod on repeat and listened to this song over and over again, until I was done crying..makes me cry every time.

In my personal opinion, this song is about the ups and downs of love; love slipping away...and coming back. Not always just the perfect romance.

So close that door. Is this happening?
At first I thought that she no longer loved him, and he couldn't believe he was watching her go.

    We're both flying away.
I interpreted this as the both of them growing apart, no longer knowing how to feel about one another. A loss as the both of them "fly away" on their seperate directions, a strong connection slowly weakening.

So we talked, about moms and dads, about family pasts, just getting to know where we came from.
I first interpreted this as the two trying to find things to talk about, having a hard time: trying to figure out how they came to one another in the first place. What willed them toward the other.

I raised my hand as if to show you that I was yours. That I was so yours for the taking, I'm still so yours for the taking.
He is trying to prove to her that she is all he wants, and is willing to give things up in order to be able to be with her.

And I'll try to sleep to keep you in my dreams, till I can bring you home with me
I thought of this as them not being together, and him trying his hardest to get her back in his mind, and dream about her, although she may no longer love him.

In the end, they are together and discovering their unconditional love towards one another.

So, this is just my interpretation(:

General Comment:This song actually fits my situation pretty well. I'm off at college and met my girlfriend in let's just say an unconventional way. I met her on a site called omegle.com and got to talking and liked her personality, so I gave her my e-mail address at the college. The next day I get on to check my mail and discover that she had e-mailed me. One thing led to another, and now here we are. We talk over a webcam pretty much nightly, but since she lives in Oregon while I'm in Pennsylvania there's a bit of trouble with the time difference. There have been many nights where I've been up until the early hours just talking to her about anything and everything, and will be many more until she moves out here next summer. So many times I found us with her head on my stomach (in the form of my laptop) and trying not to fall asleep so we could continue talking.

General Comment:I view this song as the sequel to She's My Ride Home: the two have just escaped from the world, and now they've found a place where they can be alone and just enjoy each other's company. Time slips away from them as they hold each other and just talk, getting to know each other intimately. The fact that the song takes place on a balcony is definately Justin's way of tipping his hat to Romeo and Juliet, two lovers who left everything behind, including life, to be with each other, against all odds. It's pure love poured into a song, and this is very high on my list of all-time favorite songs.

the closeness of "my breath is on your hair" is incredible for a visionary. i can see justin standing behind a girl so close, with her actually opening herself up for everyone else to see how she's feeling.

not only is this song about love its about how they're opening up for everyone to see their feelings

General Comment:This song is so great. I think it's about two people who've fallen in love with each other unexpectedly. I feel like he's fallen in love before and has had his heart broken and she's mending his heart.

"And then I felt the wind pick up/I grabbed the rail while choking up/These words to say/And then you kissed me"
In this verse, the "wind" is his body's rush, his dizziness as he realizes he has to tell her he loves her but he's nervous. "And then you kissed me" is his way of saying "and then you reassured me"

"But here we are/On this 18th floor balcony/And we're flying away"
To him, it seems amazing that "here [they] are" and they're "flying away" together

a very powerful and beautiful song :)
